I'm looking for a Laptop for college and I'm buying it soon because it is my graduation present from my family.

I looked at Dell and built a pretty good Laptop:
Dell's Options: 1,800
Custom color options.
2.5GHz C2D
Vista
17'' 1920x1200 Display
256MB 8600MGT
3GB Ram
320GB HD (5400rpm, not up to date on Laptop's, but shouldn't there be a 7200rpm option?)
Wireless-N Capable
2.0 Megapixel Webcam, built in.
X-Fi sound card option (Aduiophile :-\, will look into and probably remove, no real need tbqh)
1-YR Home service Parts+Labor, 24x7 Phone support

But wait, it's a dell? I'd like the laptop to survive my entire college career (well, my first 4 years anyway.)

Apple: 1,700
Custom color
2GB Ram
OSX (Will add Vista just because I'm used to it but will play around and learn OSX)
2.4GHz C2D
250GB 5400RPM HD
1200x800 screen (real hit for me :-\)
No dedicated GPU
iSight
Wireless-N
1YR Service 90 Day phone support.

Or beg and bribe and go bankrupt for a Macbook Pro 17'', nearly 3k. :(

I like the Apple's but unless they let me spend another grand for a Pro I probably won't get one.

Then there is the ASUS laptops, from what I've seen of tose they look pretty nice, but I can't for the life of me find any way to configure them, nor do I know what model to get because they have 6 damn models all summarized with, "Great gaming and media device," BS which is just annoying becuase it doesn't tell me the somewhat knowledgable consumer anything.

Halp. :(

Uh, there are macbook pros for 2k that has an 8600GT, with a 2.4GHz Intel C2D. Although the Dell has much better bang for the buck, my dad has had a macbook pro for YEARS, and it still working. Just had to replace the optical drive once, and that is it. You might want to go for that.

LG P300 - Intel C2D T8100, 13.3" WXGA+ screen, 2 GB RAM, Nvidia Geforce 8600M GS 256 MB, 160 GB hard drive.

I got it for $1800 Canadian in early 2008 and it's very stable and reliable (running Windows XP).

ASUS G1 and F3 series notebooks are good too:

At $1600 USD, it is terrific value. It even has internal Bluetooth. I highly recommend this one. 1680x1050 screen can't be easily beaten.

The only ASUS product I have is an old EEE 4G, and I love it.

I would prefer the 17'' version, only because I'm a whore, and its 2,800 stock. :(

Buckshiot, I don't want a 13.3 screen. ._.

Ah, 13" too small for you?

The ASUS laptop I posted above has a 15.4" screen. Apart from great specs, it has great features like 4 USB ports, HDMI-out, Bluetooth, a good webcam, and it already comes with 2 GB RAM (previously, they used to sell only 1 GB in their pre-built models and you'd have to upgrade yourself).

I don't like Macbook Pros tbh. As with their iPods, they fail to offer enough features for the money. No, the inclusion of the Mac OS is not an acceptable price factor.

And why would you consider a 17" screen? At that size, you might as well just buy a desktop. 17" is just too big to be portable. Heck, most laptop carrying bags at the local store aren't built to hold 17" laptops.

I forgot, there's the upcoming Fujitsu Amilo series which features the new ATI XGP connectivity port for high-speed external graphics.

what the fuck 18.4. I want small, high pixel density screens, and something that won't attract my entire class room's eyes when I am watching porn during class.

There's a 16.4" version too. It has similar specs to the 8920G, the acer 6920G :)
