Hey everyone! We've been keeping this secret for a good amount of time now but it's finally time to spill the beans. A few months ago Dane and myself started talking about his map Retina and I offered to help him get it in game. It's been a hell of a learning experience for me and Dane but the map is finally done and ready to be sent out for beta testing.

I'm afraid that at the moment I can't post any in game screen shots since they come out with tons of graphical artifacts but we can give you some of the older renders that Dane made for the map:

Hopefully within a few hours Dane will post some new ingame screenshots. We highly recommend that you use the bloom mod with this map. For such high res textures I am actually surprised that it runs so well.

I've tested the gameplay with some friends from school and with the weapons set up in their current configuration they really liked it. The map is small and simple and they said that it played a lot like Wizard from Halo PC. However, you guys are the final judges of the map. What we would like from you guys is just some comments about gameplay because the shaders and such are still fairly rough at the moment. This may be a public beta but it still is fairly rough and needs quite a bit of work before release.

Hmm, now that certainly is wierd, wonder what could be causing that :confused2:. Sorry about that, I'll work on fixing it. Can you guys give me information about your setups/what mods (if any) you are using? Eg. OS, Video Card, Sound Card, etc.? We want to nail this down ASAP because this map is really important to us, especially since we plan on releasing PB2 soon...

It's in my computer specs,

I was running the halocedev (the one bittressbanana made) but thats about it. I'm going to run it on one core just to check.

He used a shader_chicago (i believe) and set the up the UVW animation periods to slide across..

Close. It's just a single 1024 x 256 pixel (or something like that) shader_environment with u-animation function set to slide and the period and scale both set to 1. I left v-animation alone.

Yes, Halo supports EAX and environmental audio as long as you have a sound card that supports that feature and you aren't running Vista.

Thanks, I was just running it with only two speakers though, and some sounds seemed like they where being cut off, is it because of lack of more speakers, or the sound card?
Also, How many speakers does it require for EAX to work properly, and how many does it support in total?

If you don't already have one I'd recommend that you get at least a set of 2.1 speakers. You can get decent sets for $30 if you don't want to spend very much. Make sure that you have the correct number of speakers set in the windows sound properties area, otherwise sound isn't going to be outputed to those missing speaker thingies.

EAX doesn't have a speaker requirement, just a sound card requirement.

I agree. The software acceleration (I think it is?) sounds more spatial than the hardware acceleration.

so hey, a while back somebody decided to say "look i has h3mt beta" and sent me the map titled "retina_beta_1" via and truly thought i had forgotten how amazing this map is. needless to say, i have shown this to at least 5 of my friends and only one of them understood why its funny. :fail:
