Still a work on progress. I need to work on the water and sky quite a bit.

I see no canyon, only hills submerged in water. Still sexy though.

Hmm. I might lower the water level to make it more of a river.

The water also looks very... not detailed. =p

And do something with the sky, it is quite boring.

http://i266.photobucket.com/albums/ii256/echo216/canyon.jpg I lowered the water level. If anybody has advice on fixing up the water please speak up.

All you did was lower the water level. The sky and water are still aesthetically the same.

The sky is really boring and the composition is crappy.

Any better?

The whole scene looks really fake. You need to make it look plausible.

Disaster
July 20th, 2008, 11:40 AM
Is it the way the terrain is that makes it fake?

Roostervier
July 20th, 2008, 12:01 PM
No, it's the lighting, the sky, the water, and how the cliffs look basically exactly the same (in terms of texture).

ok, I'm changing the theme of the map currently. Making it a mountainous grassy canyon with a meadow.

What are you making it in?

Lighting is a key thing your need to get down.

Im using the default scanline renderer in 3ds max. I'm relatively new to rendering. I just wanted someway to show off my terrain model.

You've got basically a lake in the middle of tall rock mountains. There's no green whatsoever, and that makes it look really stupid. where there's water, there life. Your scene is full of water and no life at all.

Lighting is an issue, what you have model wise, is okay. It will do but you need to play with the shaders/lighting.

I dont know how many light sources you have or what type. Try changing the white colour (I assume its still on white) to a more organic true light colour. Usually a combination of yellow and white, so a light yellow will do.

Play around with intensity you dont want it too bright.

Worked on changing the theme and tweaking the model a bit today. Don't focus on the crappy render. Need advice as to what to add to the scene.
that green enough for u snaf =\

Water looks too tiled and unnatural, add waves and foam crashing against the rocks if you can. Just drag another plane over the designated area and create a texture with waves, foam and alpha channel. Look at Death Island, forget the halo map name.. it's a default map.

I have completely removed water from the scene unless you guys really want it back =\

Well without water it looks pretty boring, also like rooster said Lighting and make a custom cliff texture with the Unwrapped UV of the cliff/hill/maiwnton.

Change the material editor to make it look like it's rocks, and maybe add a bump map. Check out some rendering tutorials, just :google: it, to maybe find out ways of making it look nicer. Screw around with everything until you get comfortable.

Try using vertex colouring so that you can have smooth transitions to bitmaps if you aren't already... if you are, then do a better job of it. :X

Also, I assume the black areas are the unintended side-effects of using normal maps? Really fix up the lighting. I know you said don't pay attention to the render, but I really can't help it.

Also (again), don't mountains have trees on them? Even if not all mountains do, I think you should add some trees in there.

Yeah. I've been trying to get groundwiz planter to work all week. It just won't comply . Ill try to fix up the bad normal maps and I will use vertex paint once I can learn how to use it =\.

There's no shore line...

Random google search = http://www.heritageinterp.com/_borders/CCFP_-_Gen_Beach_Shoreline.jpg

Uhm the other thing that pops out is that the water isn't transparent enough. Kinda looks like plastic with to much specularity.

Another random google search = a tutorial on ocean water (wtf? lol, he's using a different app so just translate) http://www.majesticimaging.com/html/lw_watertut/index.html

Is this the same thing that you have posted in the QC thread?

Well I did post it in it a while back before I was going to turn it into something like this.
