The challenge for the month of:

August is a vehicle challenge! An APC (armored personel carrier) of your design with a maximum of 7500 triangles.

what it can be:
It can look like something that would fit into alternate history or something completely futuristic or a modern theme.

what it can't be:
A remodleing of a vehicle from any game. A rendition of someone else's concept. Downloaded. An edit of a downloaded model. An edit of an old model. Something that exists.

Posting Guidelines:

3 inspiration images if you cannot draw concept art
1 concept sketch that YOU MADE
3 final renders (one from the front 3/4 view, one from rear 3/4 view, and one showing entrances/exits/interior

You must show progress, including wireframe renders! Any final model entries with no wip renders will not be accepted, regardless.

EDIT: if you are only a concept artist or you are a modeler of no artistic capability, you can enter as part of a two man team.

these rules are subject to change as i see fit

SEPTEMBER: Sci-fi sidearm competition

Your task is to create a science fiction sidearm for a soldier. It can shoot lasers, plasma, bullets, be in the form of a pistol or revolver, or PDW style.
Art requirements: 3 inspiration images or one sketch.
Model requirements: moving parts, if it is mechanically operated, must be demonstrated. Charges or bullets must be modeled.
Due to a number of requests late into the apc challenge for a higher triangle count allowance, I have decided there will be no limit to the number of triangles for this month!

PRIZE!: SMASH is one cool guy, and is offering up a 1 Month XBox Live Gold Subscription Card to the winner!

OCTOBER: Air-defense system

Again, a creation from your mind, nothing in existence. The air defense system can be vehicle mounted or fixed position, and can be for any era! Past, present or future. It can be designed to shoot down the Da Vinci helicopter, jets and helicopters of the modern age or anything you can think of that might be a flight platform of the future. Will it shoot down attack aircraft or interplanetary carrier scale transports? IT'S UP TO YOU! (heck even maybe a flying sailship with rocket propellers as the target "airship") This is supposed to be a surface-to-air defense system, so nothing that's flying around engaging targets etc.

NOVEMBER: Combat Knife (week one)
AP mine or Hand grenade (week two)

note: November's contest will be broken up into 4 mini competitions. Either 4 one-week long competitons or 2 one-week and one two-week competition.

As per the monthly rules, the idea is to come up with something from your imagination. Since this is a simple object, only one sketch is required. Nothing larger than a small machette. fantasy, different materials, normal mapped or texutred, etc, as far as you want to take it. Entries will be judged 7 days from today.

week 2: Pretty open competition this week, but with a 2k triangle limit. one sketch required.

DECEMBER: Pirate raid boat or Raider guntruck (a small pirate craft for raiding and taking control of larger vessels or raider armed vehicle for capturing supplies, etc)

No sketch required, no poly limit, anything used must be of your own work.

FEBRUARY: Military Motorcycle

Motorcycles have been a quirky addition to the battlefield since ww2. They are particularly useful in quickly moving across open terrain, patrolling, carrying equipment, and, as seen in the current middle east conflict, RPG teams use them to hit and run.

No poly limit, your own design, sketches and/or inspiration.

Don't ask me stupid questions like CAN IT BE ON WATER or IN SPACE or FLYING. You know what a motorcycle is. I don't have a problem with a sci-fi variation like the star-wars speeders.

Examples of acceptable and unacceptable design styles:

good: dirt bikes
bad: harley or "chopper' style bikes

good: sith speeder, clone speeder
bad: ghost, final fantasy motorcyle

MARCH: Military Robot

your own design. anything goes, from a retro-futuristic style to a futurism "iRobot" style. Must be roughly human sized, weaponized or capable of weapon use, and autonomous.

AUGUST/SEPTEMBER: ANYTHING ALIEN

RETRO THROWBACK ALIEN BLASTERS TIME. Take a look back at the classic alien blaster, pistol, deathray, etc. Add a little bit of modern flair to it, if you'd like. No poly limit. Think of the classic grays and their tech!

I suggest this thread be stickied for the time being.

Also, a few suggestions.

We should All make threads for our APC project titled

MC#1 or MC: APC (Modelling Challenge, Armored Personel Carrier)

What is the criteria for Judging the concepts/models, who will be doing it?

Some possible categories for the award winners are

-Best Model
-Best Accuracy
-Best Concept
-Best Try :p

This competition is a fabulous idea and I hope to see many entries no matter how aesthetically pleasing they may or may not be.

You guys can post your work in the thread i create once august first rolls around or post in your gallery threads until that time :) I'll be the sole judge, that way as many people as possible have a chance to participate in the competition. If any of my friends choose not to participate, I may ask them to co-judge.

I'll announce categories for winners later on.

Sounds like fun. I think I'll whip something up to get my mind off of the fifty bajillion projects that are keeping me busy atm.

clarification: So the contest runs through August- we have until the end of August to submit our entries?

Also, if I submit something early but then decide I don't quite like it, can I fix it and have the newer version judged?

hmm neat idea, we had a similar contest with less guidelines over at GBX a while ago that Dominator started, the first contest went well but it received less and less attention afterwards... there was usually just a random category chosen, like an "Elevator" or "out post". I believe it was also timed...

idk if I'll enter into this though, I'd rather keep working on my map.

Rob Oplawar

Ok, so here's the deal.
I've been doing visualization for yadda yadda yadda you don't care, the short of it is I am in hardcore "i don't care about polygon count" mode. My last model was 500k polys.

So like, I'm tossing around an idea here, and if I were allowed to do, say, movie style modeling, rather than game style modeling, I think I could make something stunning.

Of course, that would put many game-style models at a severe disadvantage, as getting similar quality out of that many fewer polygons would take a lot of time and effort.

I'm committed to this idea of mine now, so if you stick by your 7500 rule that's ok, I'll just post it in my Studio thread instead.

And again, I direct you to that wikipedia article.

Armoured personnel carriers (APCs) are armoured fighting vehicles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Armoured_fighting_vehicle) developed to transport infantry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infantry) on the battlefield (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle). They usually have only a machine gun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Machine_gun) although variants carry recoilless rifles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recoilless_rifle), anti-tank guided missiles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-tank_guided_missile) (ATGMs), or mortars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mortar_%28weapon%29). They are not really designed to take part in a direct-fire battle, but to carry the troops to the battlefield safe from shrapnel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrapnel) and ambush (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambush). They may have wheels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wheel) or tracks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caterpillar_track). Examples include the American M113 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M113) (tracked), the British (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Kingdom) FV 432 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FV_432_AFV) (tracked), the French (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France) VAB (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A9hicule_de_l%27Avant_Blind%C3%A9) (wheeled), the Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Netherlands)/German (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany) GTK Boxer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer_MRAV) (wheeled) and the Soviet BTR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BTR-50) (wheeled). More heavily armed and armoured are Infantry fighting vehicles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infantry_fighting_vehicle), which are designed for direct combat.

SnaFuBAR
August 1st, 2008, 04:26 PM
It can be wheeled, tracked, a mix of the two, hover, be amphibious, etc. So long as it carries troops, is your original design, and armored.

Or, like I said, it can be designed to fit into alternate history, such as a steam powered one with steel plates all over to protect from musket fire.

Cortexian

My question was more geared towards more futuristic aspects, such as "does it have to be ground-based?" or "does it need to have wheels or treads?".
Snaf said it could be a futuristic vehicle. A hovering APC would reduce the risk of triggering IEDs and Mines, therefore improving the odds that troops are delivered intact.

Make sure you make some cool looking hover jets/repulsers instead of just modeling an APC without a drive assembly.

EDIT: Fuck you Snafaroo.

Don't you think that the manner of propulsion to keep an entire APC airbourne...even to a hover. Don't you think that would trigger mines?

SnaFuBAR
August 1st, 2008, 08:00 PM
Might not. Current hovercraft can safely traverse over anti-tank mines, to my knowledge. However, if the skirt were to catch the trigger of a bounding mine, that would compromise the air cushion.

a dropship is not an apc, and why could you make more than one submission? Seriously people.

A dropsjip is armored, it carries people into combat, provides covering fire while they exit/enter and then leaves, sounds alot like an APC to me :D

Bastinka
August 5th, 2008, 03:32 PM
Well if you really want to model it go ahead, I don't think Snaf will mind. He probably won't accept it as an APC.

Also an APC is an Armor Personnel Carrier, it doesn't necessarily provide cover fire.. Why a dropship though. The competition is supposed to be for APC's but if you can make a good model, make it. Competitions/Challenge is almost over :P

SnaFuBAR
August 5th, 2008, 03:33 PM
A dropship is not an apc and I will not accept it for the competition. APC's are land based with the ability (usually) for amphibious use.

Thinks about it, a Mi-24 Hind D is exactly how you described, being armored, carries troops into combat and provides covering fire, but it is not an apc, it is a helicopter gunship/transport.

But if everyone's was a simple, land based, four wheeled, armored vehicle, this would be very boring. I'm not saying that flying APC is a good idea, because like snaf said, that would really be a dropship, but dont stick to plain boring ideas. I saw a covie one and I love the idea of the DD bus. Originality ftw.

August 8th, 2008, 12:53 AM
Well i just kind of had an idea in my head. and don't think that i just ripped off the "hovering" idea that was already said here and turned it into flying. I came up with the idea in the time that I haven't had internet for the past week.

But yeah, the idea is that the APC is mainly a land vehicle, but it has the ability to fly for a short amount of time, to be able to quickly evacuate if needed. As mentioned earlier, yes it would take quite a lot of power to make an APC fly, thats why it would only be used for a short amount of time to get out of tight situations.

OmegaDragon
August 17th, 2008, 05:04 AM
I have an idea in my head of something that would be suitable as an APC, but I need confirmation on this; the vehicle must remain on the ground, but does it need wheels? It may be futuristic, but may it be unrealistic?

Why does it have to resemble a pistol or a revolver....? Some sidearms are small shotguns, and other small compact close qaurters/ medium range weapons.

SnaFuBAR

Because small shotguns are breaching weapons, not sidearms in the capacity that is meant for self defense beyond point blank range.

looks too flat at the front.. doesnt seem as epic as Dano may have wanted it, goto one of the Sidearm wip threads and you'll see a handle Dano sketched up and you'll see how fat and more covey it looks than your handle atm.

Hunter, thats way too flat where the handle is. The metal part underneath should be like a thin blade kind of thing, and the green plate on top is actually a wide pad, with a thicker middle point. You did the y axis depth properly, as a side on, but you didnt really think much about the x axis depth, everything appears to be of equal width in perspective. Nice start though :)

Oh and this gun wasn't meant to be covenant at all.

Thats exactly what I thought when dane showed me it, but the its easier to understand how its held once in comparison to master chief. Even though this isn't covenant.

Bastinka

Wait no isn't it a vehicle?

Chainsy
September 9th, 2008, 07:08 PM
No...? It was originally a covenant flamethrower design. Basically you pulled the the "tail" back (which is a handle) and the "mouth" opens and spews plasma. But that was a while back, I have no idea what it is now or what it does.

Bastinka
September 9th, 2008, 07:13 PM

Hold on Ill make a quick sketch of how its held.

Chainsy
September 9th, 2008, 07:29 PM
Ok, as shown in this quick depiction what if Johnny Bravo got a hold of dis shit, Johnny holds the gun as so, and pulls back lever to fire. This is only to show how it is held, it in now way relates to the actual model, and the scaling of danes may be completely different.

Corndogman
September 9th, 2008, 08:38 PM
It would be impossible to hold the front of the gun with one hand while pulling the back part down, the weight just seems way to unbalanced. Maybe if it had a strap that went over the shoulder it would work.

Is tomorrow the due date? Also we do need to have 1 concept right?

Corndogman
November 25th, 2008, 08:21 PM
Ok well... Idk If anyone was planning on participating, or if today is the deadline, but I made something so I'm gonna go ahead and post it.

It's an exploding Shruiken star (ninja star) or ShruikenC4, whichever. Basically it has a timer on it like C4 and creates a small explosion, probably a few feet in diameter. Guess you could call it an AP mine. So just picture throwing a ninja star into someones chest, then they explode seconds later.

So anyways here's my crappy concept (just an outline of the model, never actually drew it out or anything):
http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa303/corndogman939/shruikoutline.jpg

And some renders:

I may actually participate in this, using the characteristic modern pirate raid vehicle.

OK, so um.. from what I have seen in these questions it can be any time period. And being me, I have some kind of space future fetish... would my fetish satisfy the requirements?

Boat or truck. This strictly and obviously means either a surface floating vessel or a land based, wheeled vehicle. It really should look like it was pieced together instead of coming off a production line. Remember to make sure it fits the theme. Space, submarines, airships, etc, are NOT acceptable for this contest.

Bah, there goes my idea :/
Might be able to do some little adjustments here and there to make it acceptable.

Nice render. I wasn't looking too closely, so at first glance I mistook it for a photograph.

The competition will pick back up in February, considering all the problems we had in December with the server and the script kiddie.
