View Full Version : Worth it to jailbreak your Ipod?

A few days ago I bought an ipod touch 8gb for 145 off Ebay (orginally 233, just sold my old ipod video to make a few bucks). For those who have an ipod touch, I'm just wondering whether or not it's worth it to jail break it? Don't want to do something that won't be worth it in the long run. :)

Now, with the app store, not so much. There are a bunch of free tweaks and games available for jailbroken iPods, but the stuff that you can ge tin the App Store is honestly a lot better, if you're willing to pay for some of it.

I would imagine though, that the stuff at the app store is probably being either replicated, or able to be gotten free.

I'm not so sure of that. There are loads and really loads of well made apps for the jailbroken ipod touch. It hasn't even crossed my mind to buy anything from the apple app store (except if they bring out a sonic game :p).

Coming from someone with no clue except what I would want to do, Id jailbreak it. I'd also wait for another person to agree with me, because I dont know the downsides.

I have an iphone (old version with 1.1.4 firmware) and there are no downsides with the jailbreak/unlock if it's done properly.

You should absolutely Jailbreak your device.

There are ways out there that are almost 100% fool-proof GUI compared to the earlier CLI. Do it. You will not be disappointed. If you have questions, ask me.

After seeing the recent responses, I'm definitely jailbreaking this thing once it arrives.
What application would you personally recommend to jailbreak it? The two applications I'm seeing the most are Ziphone and iLibrary. Or would you recommend another way to jailbreak it?

ZiPhone works pretty flawlessly. I'd use it.

I do not recommend ZiPhone at all. (http://pumpkinpat.ch/zibri_rant.html) It is a hack that works, however it is not as "safe" as an official Dev Team (http://blog.iphone-dev.org/) release. Either use the Pwnage Tool for OS X (the team's official release) or the Windows port, WinPwn. These releases work with all firmware including 2.0 official.

I am NOT a part of the Dev Team, but I know what I'm talking about.

I've used ZiPhone on over 5 devices already, none of them showed anything wrong with them after jailbreak/unlock. Please explain, is there any serious flaw that could happen?

No, not at this point if jailbreaking for pre-2.0 firmwares. His earlier versions had bugs that were completely overlooked or intentional (making the MAC address read 0:Z:i:b:r:i).

Dev Team's tool is trusted and accesses complete control over the kernel and low-level systems. Custom firmware allows for customizable ROM images, a regular restore through iTunes, and the option to have payloads delivered on installation. You choose.

I would use WinPwn (http://winpwn.com/index.php/Main_Page). And if you want the 2.0 update, I'm sure you have the smarts to find it. Or you can pay for it using iTunes.

wait, iTunes has jailbreak apps? (without an iPod, iPhone, or iPod touch, I wouldn't really know these things...)

Managed to jailbreak it with Winpwn. The only thing I've been trying to do is add some of the games I have. WinSCP has been useless for that. Then again I believe I might be doing something wrong.

You installed Cydia, correct? Applications are currently being ported right now to Cydia, but Installer v4 is coming out within a couple weeks. You will not be disappointed!

Oh believe me I'm not disappointed with it at all so far. Got a couple nice programs from Cydia which I'm happy with. I'm just trying to get WinSCP to work so I can import a couple of the NES games (which I do happen to own as well :)) that I happen to have.
