Known about it for a while, might as well share it here. ;)

What is Skulltag

Just what is Skulltag, you ask? Skulltag is a sourceport for the once and still popular game, Doom II. It features many brand new features to the game, including new items, weapons, skins, bots, levels, gameplay modes, and a whole slew of other things.
Skulltag focuses on newschool gameplay, adding such features as client/server networking, freelook, jumping, hardware rendering, 3d floors, models, new gamemodes, bots, and additional mapsets for Deathmatch (http://skulltag.com/wiki/Deathmatch), Invasion (http://skulltag.com/wiki/Invasion), CTF (http://skulltag.com/wiki/CTF), Skulltag (game mode) (http://skulltag.com/wiki/Skulltag_%28game_mode%29), LMS (http://skulltag.com/wiki/LMS), and Duel (http://skulltag.com/wiki/Duel).
The single player portion of Skulltag consists of three brand new scenarios: "The Mortal Conflict", an episode of deathmatch levels, accompanied with playable bots, "Tournament of The Damned", an episode of skulltag (the gameplay mode) levels, also accompanied with playable bots and "The Impending Nightmare", A new game mode in Skulltag called Invasion, in which monsters are spawned in a series of waves. The multiplayer portion of ST is based on the client/server setup, in which people host game servers, and players connect to those games using a launcher, or command line parameters. This setup allows players to enter and leave games while the game is going on, as opposed to being locked into a game, and only being able to join when the game starts, like other versions of Doom.
In addition, Skulltag maintains ZDoom (http://www.zdoom.org/) and GZDoom (http://grafzahl.drdteam.org/) support, including DECORATE (http://zdoom.org/wiki/DECORATE) and ACS (http://skulltag.com/wiki/Community_ACS_Tutorial), and should be compatible with any WAD made for Vanilla, Boom, ZDoom, or GZDoom.

Why use Skulltag?

So why use Skulltag, as opposed to other ports, or doom2.exe? I'll tell you why!

It's based on the amazing ZDoom, by Randy Heit. It has inherited all of ZDoom's features, which you can view here. In addition to those features, ST has an uncapped framerate, the ability to play Heretic/Hexen, and many more!
Superior client/server capability! Skulltag's multiplayer is roughly based on ZDaemon 1.x, by NightFang. On top of that, it's also had some major optimizations, so smooth, that even 56k users can play on it.
It features a ton of new content, such as maps, weapons, etc.; adding to the already incredible Doom universe!
It features an in-game server browser! Now, you can go browse and join servers without the aid of a launcher! You can also low between single player and multiplayer games with great ease.
It features maps from incredibly talented mappers, such as Boris Iwanski, Mike Watson (Cyb), and Derek MacDonald (Afterglow).
It has the new icon/medal system! Players get awarded medals for performing great feats (such as getting 5 frags without dying), and icons that let other players know important information about yourself (if you're chatting, lagging, etc.)
It features the announcer system! A customizable announcer announces certain events throughout the game (such as when there's 3 frags left). Users can make their own announcer wads, place them in the \ANNOUNCER directory, and users can select between the different announcer profiles (similar to skins)!
Skulltag is an all-in-one port! Skulltag can be run in single player, client, or host mode, all with one exe!

Screenshots: (Kinda outdated) http://skulltag.com/screenshots/
The article is kind of outdated as well. :( (There have been many new features since then like model support, Hi res textures, game modes and a crap load of other stuff)
Rather new video : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXSrc2Q8088
Oh and 2 more things not mentioned in the article, it supports up to 32 people and has the best netcode I have seen. I've played with a guy who had 400-500 ping and it was still playable and fun.

My idea: Gamenight? :)
There is tons of stuff I haven't mentioned on the website.
www.skulltag.com (http://www.skulltag.com)

Oh yeah, and Linux support. (That's right Admiral )

Games supported: Doom, Ultimate Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, Hexen, Herectic, Strife, oh and FreeDoom (A free replacement for Doom 2 made with user content.)

I'm actually very impressed by community, the mapping, and very intense scripting support.

December 2008 bump:
Bump, due to the Holiday sales program, all classic Doom games (excluding Final Doom) are on sale for a Dollar each. :-D

This is the greatest time to buy and then go play some Skulltag. %)
If your extremely cheap, Doom 2 is a lot more vital for Skulltag. BUY.

Bout time somebody made a thread about this. It's amazing how far Doom II has come in terms of modding. Download Ultimate Torment & Torture for GZDoom and be amazed.

Skulltag is free, you just need to buy any of the Doom games (they play Doom 2 the most so if you want to pay minimally, just buy Doom 2, It's like 10 bucks over Steam and takes a few seconds to download)

You only need one file from that package, the wad file. (Doom 2 wad specifically) Then your good to play.

I doubt its 10 bucks. Should be like a few bucks. If your looking for general source ports I recommend GZdoom and Zdoom. If you're looking to enhance the graphics try the Doomsday Engine or Risen3d. www.realm667.com and http://forum.zdoom.org/viewforum.php?f=19 are probably the best sites for the most high quality mods and maps.

Seriously...the original CnC is fucking free and it was released a year after Doom II. I CALL SHENANIGANS.

Do you even get an accessible version of the .wad file? Steam usually packages them up...

I just got the Doom collector's edition from Ebay for about $4. I'll definitely play this a little.

Yeah you do get it with steam.

I love how .wads work...You could use a blood mod, a skybox, a weapons mod, and a monsters mod all together. The compatibility is sooo sweet. O

I don't see the difference. In Doom, pk3 and wad files have no differences between each other.

I just said Pk3 because some of the most amazing and ground-breaking mods have come in that form. :-3 Although I did think there was some sort of difference... oh well.

I think it's because of Steve Urkell. Yea, that's definitely it.
