View Full Version : [WIP] BobtheGreat's Entry For October

Yeah... sorry, not gonna say much right now, kind of tired and I'm going to bed. But this is work from today. Anyway, this is pretty much just the base, and I'll get my concept art for the cannons up soon. Yeah, it's a high energy laser like weapon. I know right now it looks like I just copied a lot of the model over and over again... and well, that's sorta what I did, but once I get the basic layout I'll start rearranging stuff to mix it up a bit.

Anyway...

Make a low poly version of it and bake some normals.

And then put it into an RTS :3.

Looks really nice, good job.

Not errors. The top is really smooth. And for some reason Mental Ray is rendering shadows that shouldn't be cast. I'll fix the smoothing though, don't worry.

Out of curiosity, whats the purpose of the ladder on the back? "to climb on top duh." But I mean if the gun rotates to aim, wont anyone on top fall off?

Maintenance. There's a hatch on top to get in to the inside to fix up gears or something I guess.

whats the point of the gears if you have hydraulics underneath.

I don't like how the gears are "so" exposed, if they were a little deeper into the turret I think it might look better. As for purpose, they could have something to do with loading new ammunition canisters (like the gas they use in Star Wars (Tibana gas iirc) to fire their laser weapons).

It's kind of difficult to explain... the turret can lean forward and backward. This would give access to the ladder. But because of this rotation, the gears also need to turn in order to keep the base of the guns parallel to the base of the entire turret.

Looks awesome but think it makes the main weapon look small... and those towers at the back might get shot at when main weapon is firing at aircraft.

nick3d
October 28th, 2008, 09:12 AM
Speechless :O

E:

Hunter isnt that a good thing so the actual huge massive weapon thing wont be attacked, because its got more fire power than the little towers

Hunter
October 28th, 2008, 01:56 PM
It just makes the main weapon seem small, id prefer it if it looked larger. And if I was about to air strike a weapon like that I would aim for the middle.

Funny... since it's not your model/idea... :downs:

Just playing with you

It actually surprise me too... I had everything hidden but what I was working on... and after bringing everything back... I noticed how small it was compared to the other guns... I'll probable make different turrets than what I have right now, I don't really like them, they look kind of simple.

Corndogman
October 28th, 2008, 07:10 PM
Should the guns in the back be facing the other direction? Or is there going to be another larger structure back there? If so then it makes sense, but if not it seems like the guns should be facing outwards.

Now it looks like the guns surrounding the main gun are the AA guns. They look more the part, and now they look like they're sitting there to defend the larger (artillery) gun in the center from aerial attacks.

That's just me though.

BobtheGreatII
October 30th, 2008, 11:28 PM
The large gun in the center is for shooting a high powered laser in to space to knock just about out with a single shot... I would also like to note that uh... I know the generator wouldn't really allow that... but oh well, try to use your imagination. lol... Anyway, contest renders in, check out that thread.

Also, awesome model work, but the design of everything overall seems to be lacking. The amount and apparent complexity of the objects overwhelms and seems to have detail, but it doesn't have much design detail. There are lots of shapes and all together its a fine effort, but when you break it down individually, each piece isn't really that fantastic. They're still made up of solid evident shapes like cylinders and what not.

Really good work though, but take it further. Best thing for you to do would be to get a hold of some gears or ut3 level props, and have a look at em.

Also, concept your ideas fully and flesh them out first. If you design as you model, chances are your not going to push the design to match the detailed concept, so your going to fall short. It's hard to imagine impressive details on the fly without looking like a clusterfuck.

BobtheGreatII
November 2nd, 2008, 01:08 AM
Harsh. :saddowns:

But thanks for some actual crit. I see what you're saying, and I'll be sure to look out for making it a so called "clusterfuck".

it LOOKS cool, which is most important really, but still, design wise, it's just a bunch of stuff copied 50 times and thrown together in the hopes of it looking neat.
