I swear to God I had the exact same idea just yesterday. exactly the same, a giant crossbow that shoots spears at dragons. Guess I'm too late now.

It's sitting on a stool

Kalub
October 16th, 2008, 08:55 PM
That is no ordinary stool, I designed it, so it must be awesome.

Con
October 16th, 2008, 09:23 PM
It's a big stool for big guys, they take it to the bar with them once they're done slaughtering dragons, eating hearts, etc.

edit:

originally it was bigger and negra powered, but it seemed impractical.

I'm slightly confused... Is this being made in to a model? Cause if it is... I might need to pick up the pace with the creativity in mine. D:

It's really not that original, persay. Or have none of you seen Dragonheart?

rossmum
October 19th, 2008, 10:51 PM
It's original in the sense that nobody else thought of doing one, and if you think about it missiles and guns aren't entirely original either... Dragonheart didn't invent oversized crossbows.

BobtheGreatII
October 19th, 2008, 10:59 PM
I don't really think that was his point... Nor was he all that serious.

rossmum
October 19th, 2008, 11:12 PM
Point stands, it's nice to see something other than guns/missiles in this month's contest.

BobtheGreatII
October 19th, 2008, 11:18 PM
Fair enough.

Heathen
October 19th, 2008, 11:37 PM
Sweet. Does it have any uses besides dragons?

It's still technically a missile.

That would be awesome

You could be even more of a nitpicking arsehole, you mean

You know fucking well that when missile is used in that context it means a modern, rocket-propelled projectile that typically carries an explosive payload. If you want to act like you know it all because you can pick at semantics, feel free to continue acting like a dick, I'll remember to do it every time you post as well.

1. Sarcasm
2. Being a dick.

Whatever, still uncalled for really since it added nothing to the topic

Well, he siad that he's started modeling, so... yeah. And he said he wouldn't have pictures up for a while, so that gives you some more time to work on your impatience issues.

Is it just me or do those cylinders look out of place compared to the rest of the model, dunno I would say add some more detail to those things.

Con
October 26th, 2008, 10:42 PM
which cylinders?

Con

So you think I should replace the string with something wound? That thing you say doesn't look right is shaped that way for a reason, I could try and fix the edges a bit though. The cylinder at the top is the release handle, I'll maybe give it a handle-like shape with a bend to it. I see you also circled the big bolts holding the front together, what do you think is bad about them? Also, that cylinder under the string is the pivot for the other one, which I'd rather not change at all since it does it's job nicely the way it is.

Gwunty
October 26th, 2008, 11:08 PM
I would have suggested making them look like bolts instead of a boring cylinder.
but hey thats my opinion do as you wish, ohh and you use maya right?

Con
October 26th, 2008, 11:12 PM
I'd be changing the nut and head of the bolts in that case then. I keep neglecting to add detail because I'm trying to conserve polys. Good habit, wrong time. Yes, I use maya.

From a purely technical standpoint, it really seems to me that carriage would snap off of the helix under the heavy tension. At best, the helix should be deeper/wider, at worst, the drawback mechanism ought to be done a different way.
e: now that I think about it, I suppose it is a good idea to minimize the force required to put the work into the bow. Methinks you should make it look like the mechanism on a small car jack:
http://www.m-99.co.uk/Electric_Car_Jack/electric_car_jack_1.jpg
What I note about that is that it's a socket wrapped completely around the screw, rather than just a latch on one side of the screw. But I think the reason you did that is so that it can quickly ratchet all the way back to the front to reload, yes? If that's the case, maybe it should be a clamp that grabs tight on both sides of the screw, but can release after firing. But the way it is now, I just can't see that working with any considerable amount of tension on that line.

Kalub
October 27th, 2008, 01:08 AM
Que?

Con
October 27th, 2008, 10:18 AM
The part that grabs onto the screw is designed so that it only does so under tension. After release you simply tilt it so it slides along the screw. I'll look into making the thread bigger.

http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/7117/captureky9.png

this was my third release mechanism sketch that I finally settled on.

Rob Oplawar
October 27th, 2008, 03:50 PM
ahhhh, very clever. make it look more like that in the model.

nick3d
October 27th, 2008, 07:25 PM
You need the thread of the long bolt thingy a but tighter, it'll make it a little bit more, how can i say... more realistic :\

Yeah because a giant crossbow that shoots dragons in the mouth is totally realistic man.

Yeah but it's a giant crossbow that is clearly designed specifically for shooting huge dragons in the mouth :eng101:

Con

yeah its a dragon killing crossbow made for killing dragons by shooting them

nick3d
October 30th, 2008, 06:05 AM
Yeah but still you need the thread a little bit tighter, just to make the crossbow look more realistic, it needs to be realistic looking otherwise there is no point!
