The last render looks pretty decent (needs more sun and flare though) but the first two renders aren't really flattering. Parts of them are ok, like the detail on the ghost, but the lighting and the shadows in each of them kinda look like Halo 2, which isn't great for a render tbh.

Jean-Luc
November 14th, 2008, 06:30 PM
I actually never looked at the lighting that way before. I'll see what I can do to improve that. Thanks :D

I thought it was actually halo 2 XD

The lines in the ghosts hull seem awkward, their supposed to give the illusion of where separate panels come together when the ghost is assembled. But in your render, it merely looks like a shallow meaningless groove. It's miniscule I know, but renders are meant to be nitpicked, am I right? I'd recommend making the lines in the normal map deeper and thinner as opposed to thick and shallow.

I remember seeing these a long time ago, must be like 2 years now. The first one used to be my background for a while actually.

There's not much that I have to say except listen to what Dane has to say, he knows what he's talking about.

If you have Vray, you can use its GI feature to give it a Star Wars Clone Wars(3d movie) style to it

As I goof around:

Don't worry bout the scene or even the poses, this is pure and simply my "WIP" scene for working on my custom texture/mat for the Halo 3 chiefs. Obviously, the material is unfinished.

trepidation is fucking kickass. look at that awesome reflective light.
I'd have to suggest a slightly more dynamic angle of it though.

Been redoing the material on this guy a bit. As Snaf will tell you, the last one was...yeah.

E: Should probably mention before anyone says it. The normal map is in dire need of a redo in many areas, I'm very aware of that, and I'm not quite finished remaking the texture, so if doesn't appear uniform...that's why.

The armor is too clean and the rubber/clothy material has a serious lack of detail.

Hmmm, while I understand the lack of detail on the rubber, as that's just an area I haven't gotten to yet, I'm not sure I quite get saying that the armor is too clean. Yes, while it would get battle damaged at one point, it goes without saying that the armor was brand new at the start of Halo 2.

Roostervier

He was basically showing off his material. The spec and diffuse aren't complete, and obviously the bump isn't, either.

Jean-Luc
April 25th, 2009, 09:40 PM
Again, the armor is intended to look new, or close to it. At the start of Halo 2, the Masterchief JUST got the suit, meaning it was brand new, or close to it. Man, being non-canon on this website is akin to blasphemy.

SnaFuBAR
April 25th, 2009, 09:44 PM
Not only that, but it would be a good idea to create a new material so he could do new layers of mud, dirt or damage if he wanted to for different scenes or environments. Some people should stop worrying about the armor cleanliness since this is a render chief, and allows more versatility.

This is the start of the environment for what is to be, hopefully, my last Halo render. I've stuck with rendering Halo for upwards of 4 years, and I feel it's time to move on. That said, this piece will be a thank you to those who have supported my Halo work over the years, and will hopefully be my best work to date.

Very minor update, just doing some color/lighting tests on the chiefs and environment. More to come. Should probably mention that I'm going to be basing my modelling and texture work loosely on H3: ODST's version of New Mombasa.

Yes, I know about the rigging issues. I'll fix em.

MetKiller Joe

Right.

Well, what meant was the detailing (scratches, scuffs, that sort of thing). I can see that there are normals here and there to bring out finer details on the armor, but just not wear and tear.

Jean-Luc
June 2nd, 2009, 10:29 PM
haha, should have explained that the first time. Yeah, I'll be adding damage in there, just gotta figure out what's going to be appropriate on a scene by scene basis. Aka, having some guy getting shot through the facemask with a sniper will require different scratches then someone shot in the arm.
