View Full Version : List o' Discouraged Memes?

p0lar_bear
March 16th, 2009, 03:14 AM
Yeah, I know that many want ALL *chan memes banned, no exceptions, but you have to admit, sometimes it's funny, and works with the situation. However, for every proper, witty, funny, or epic use of a meme, there are probably about 50 more unfunny, done wrong, or just plain fucking stupid posts that just can't help but reference a meme in a lame attempt to save itself.

MAJOR EDIT:
Let me reiterate that I DO NOT WANT THIS TO BE A FINALIZED "DON'T EVER DO THIS SHIT" LIST, but rather a warning that making a post that abuses or misuses any of these memes, trends, etc will probably result in you getting a slap on the wrists from the staff. Likewise, I'd also like it to be a list of "we've been here, we've done it, we don't feel like going back." Perhaps enforce that you can use them if you want to, but if you do it wrong or if it's not funny, you will get a shitposting infraction or something. In addition, this is not a definitive list of what we find unfunny while everything else is okay.

Here's my list with examples, do note that off-site links may very well contain offensive, NSFW content.

Candlejack (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Candlejack) (especially this, I sincerely regret ever bringing it onto these forums)
Rickroll (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Rickroll) (this meme has been done to death, anyone who uses it now should be shot, or in this case, permabanned)
I herd u liek mudkips (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Mudkips)
Pimp My Ride/Xzibit/Sup Dawg... (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Pimp_My_Ride)
Over 9000 (http://encyclopediadramatica.com/Over_9000)
Fail/Epic Fail
:awesome: (Also suggest following suit with SomethingAwful and renaming it to :iamafag:)
THIS ___ IS SO DAMN GOOD [IT NEEDS ITS OWN DAMN THREAD] (http://www.modacity.net/forums/showthread.php?t=13417) (Only Timo (http://www.modacity.net/forums/member.php?u=18) should ever make these)
IMMA CHARGIN MAH LAZER (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Lazer)
I accidentally X (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Accidentally)

Open to suggestions, please try to keep it on topic.

Only timo
I have no beef with timo, but even he would admit, that that is a little unfair to start making exceptions no?
Even for a mod or a senior member or whatever.
I like the idea but this is a little harsh to ban them :/
Some will be used in habit or just as a harmless joke. I think it should just be more stressed that there is a time and a place.

E: Maybe change up the guidelines a little or clarify...
Like...keep it out of this and this thread or leave it in this and this thread. I can understand the annoyance of randomeme's but like the image I just posted in the Pics thread...it follow's one of your banned meme's.
I am just saying...maybe just ban for the excess use of said meme's or something...

Timo is actually funny and knows when to use which, so I see no problem with an exception in that case. If someone can make a proper use of a meme to the point where it's genuinely funny, then I don't see a problem. When the same memekid idiots just spout the same shit like a broken record (and a completely inappropriate one, at that), infractions and/or bans are deserved.

i dunno..but I'm guessing any form of "1337 speech" also refered to as noob speak..should any action be taken if a member uses it excessively or not? I find it rather annoying to see threads where one or more users do nothing more than spell every other word with a number or a combination of numbers to form a single letter.

but yeah, should action be taken on excessive noob speak or no?

I didn't make an exception, that was my two cents. Plus, this whole thread is about exceptions. I didn't make this thread saying "GUYS OUTRIGHT BAN THIS SHIT NO MORE EVER," I made it saying that it should be made as a warning: if you're gonna attempt this shit, it better be good, otherwise you will get disciplined for it.

Keep in mind that I'm not staff. This is a suggestion, and I'd like the staff to consider it, and possibly implement it.

Much as I hate the idiots that are always doing this, I don't think having a list of stuff is the right way to do this. Humor is more of an on-the-spot judgment IMO; any predetermined set of rules is going to be flawed and require exceptions, which just ends up being even more confusing. Rather, I think just an addition to the AUP explicitly stating that overuse of memes in general will lead to infractions is sufficient; it covers the general idea and allows sufficient leeway for the exceptions that will always occur. It's not just memes either - just the general behavior type of mindlessly regurgitating phrases and bad jokes because people saw cool people do it. Of course, that's pretty much already what the "shitposting" infraction says... and hardly anyone who does this regularly has read or cares about the AUP.

Having a ruleset specifically pertaining to what is and what isn't funny just... seems like an overly reactionary response to something that really requires more than pointing to a list and saying "look, its not funny, it says so right there." I get the idea that it's more of a suggestion or warning than a "this shit will get you banned no matter what" list, but then I don't think it needs to be something as specific as a list at all. Humor is by nature very hard to grasp, and certainly couldn't be explained in a simple set of rules.

And of course, without jokes every now and then the site is no fun. I like when we can have an occasional joke thread... it's just when it spills over to discussions that should be serious or becomes overdone or is ruined by the kids who think everything funny must be imitated that it becomes a nuisance. As long as it's not out of control in those respects (as, admittedly, meme usage has been recently) then there's really no problem.

Basically, this seems a little extreme for something that could be handled far more easily. I'm not opposed to the idea of a warning, just the idea that a "list" could encompass the entire problem.

:words:

I agree with what you're saying, and I don't want to discourage humor, but I still think we need some sort of record of trends and memes that have hit this site and have been done to death, e.g. Candlejack. I (regretfully) brought that here in the Post Your Quotes thread when I was talking to Ross over XFire and started doing it to him. It picked up from there, and next thing we knew, memekids like Emmzee started derailing threads with it because they thought it was hilarous, and nobody else was laughing at it. I actually enforced an unwritten "Stop that shit" because, even though occasionally someone would breathe new life into it and do something funny with it, all of the trendwhores would immediately suck the life, posting it all over other threads.

And Rickroll; not only has that been done to death here, it's been done everywhere else too. I'd think I speak for everyone when I say "stop doing that shit, it's not funny anymore."

You see, this is what I was talking about - we're bound to miss stuff, and then people will start going "OH WELL LOOK HERE ITS NOT ON THE BANNED LIST SO DERP DERP DERP I CAN DO IT OLOLOLO". I just think an open-ended warning against annoying behavior such as shorthand and overused/unfunny/irritating memes would be much more effective.

For the record, it's not a "meme" exactly but still an incredibly irritating way of speaking. That furthers my point however; it's not just memes.

First up, those (FTW, w00t) are annoying as shit.

Second, I think we've all noticed that a lot of posters here and otherwise are coming to use 'fail', 'win', and 'epic' as the only three adjectives in their vocab. I'll admit to previously doing so myself and I still overuse shit like 'awesome' simply because I can't be arsed to work out a better description, but when every fucking post is just 'epic this, epic that, fail lol' it makes me want to hurt the people posting them.

With the exception of Rickrolling, over 9000, and epic fail/win, most of those can be both applicable and humorous under the right circumstances. It's like banning "fuck" because I fucking use the fucking word every fucking occasion I possibly fucking can. It's like stopping a leg cramp by removing the leg.

Now a clause for "repeated usage of memes in a context that is clearly not funny or applicable" would certainly be appreciated, but I think an outright ban is going just a little too far.

This, and we thought it would be a good time to try and steer the sight in the right direction.

We dont want a forum thats made solely for shit posts, we want to encourage some smarter behaviors, better threads and make the place more interesting then it is.
To do that we needed to draw a line somewhere, and these select few people happened to be standing on it.

I guarantee I could dig up more than 10 posts from any one person using the same "shitty meme". If we were to step back in time a year, you'd all be banned/warned (except the admins of course), following this threads ideals.

You shouldn't be banning a meme, you should be banning the idiot behind the fucking post. Stop ruining the fun for the rest, and stick to a rule that can't be abused by opinion.

This thread is fucking stupid. Thanks, I haven't gotten my fill of pointless PMS yet.

You guys are the ones who use/used them to death, now that you've had your fun, no one else can use them?

What about new people, who are new to a meme, and find it funny?Pretty much, though most of "us" only used them sparingly and properly while the rest of the brainless memekids decided to run the shit into the ground. Boat was here. People got on it. It left. It ain't coming back.

You shouldn't be banning a meme, you should be banning the idiot behind the fucking post.Someone retitle my thread to something more appropriate please, since nobody seems to be reading past the fucking thread title?
e: Thanks Goat Lag Goat. :haw:

I guarantee I could dig up more than 10 posts from any one person using the same "shitty meme". If we were to step back in time a year, you'd all be banned/warned (except the admins of course), following this threads ideals. But this is now. Not a year ago. You see, a funny thing called "change" happens over the course of a year. Some change is for the better, some is for the worse. When things change for the worse, people tend to address this change and suggest a way to make it better. Then along comes a half-baked conspiracy theorist who can't adapt to change, thus failing to see that people have changed, and attempts to discourage the suggestion by pointlessly pointing out that this suggestion would make us all horrible people if it had been in place a year ago.

Basicly the idea is everyone is supposedly playing the game but when they think of said game they loose so the idea is to try and get other people thinking about it without you purposely thinking it yourself.

In English:
You are all playing the game. Right now.
You cannot win the game (except P0lar), and if you think about the game, you lose.
But you automatically keep playing.
Why? Because that's the rules of the game.

As much crap as we already get for being elitist, I really don't want to enforce that al l gestapo-like because it's just dumb. Sure, I don't like those stupid mistakes as much as the next person and would prefer it if people would get it right, but warning or infracting them for it just feels excessively condescending.

El Lobo
August 18th, 2009, 04:38 PM
Seems stupid to warn someone for a spelling mistake as simple as lose and loose. If their post is so riddled with spelling and grammatical mistakes that it makes it impossible to read then yeah, go ahead and maybe warn them, but for misspelling one word? Ridiculous.

World of Goo is quite possibly one of the greatest video games of this age. It's original, not a shooter, does not try to be a reality simulator, and has a great soundtrack. It's also pretty inexpensive, and made by two great people who went out of business due to the massive amounts of people who pirated it. (I think)

Also, 2D boy is still very much alive and they're starting to prototype some ideas for possible new games.

You seem to have no idea what actually happened.

1) That was the fourth time staff had had problems with CAD's thread that week.

2) There was ample warning that the next people who decided to be smartasses would get banned. Snaf infracting chains' post should have been enough to demonstrate that we were tired of it.

3) Of the five people that got banned, four were only banned until the end of the week. There is no excuse to be bitching about a four-day ban when the people knowingly and willingly brought it on themselves.

4) Inferno, the one who was banned for longer, got pushed into 11 infraction points and was sent into detention - that would have happened regardless of any threat of banning.

I said this yesterday; it doesn't seem to have sunken in. If you want to be a dumbfuck, you must be willing to deal with the consequences. If you cannot deal with the result of making a joke at a bad time or want to be a whiny bitch about it, then don't make the joke. We've had this discussion too many times. There is a specific time and a specific place to make a joke and people who can't understand that shouldn't be in the business of trying to be funny.
