God damn it. The last thing I expected was for my backup drive to crash. I lost my backups (which I've already replaced on a new drive pullled out of a old computer) but some of the files on my backup drive where not on my main so I lost them.

The list of sadness:
I lost my PS2 roms. ( MY ONLY COPY OF ACE COMBAT :(:(:(:(:( I sold it so long ago I'll never get another chance to rip it.)
I lost all of my Halo 2 Xbox files and programs (FUUUCK There went my only copy of CMR2.0)
I lost a few other small odds and ends + my complete set of installers and my ISO archives. Every game I ever owned in ISO's. ( I SPENT SO MUCH TIME CREATING THOSE )
And of course I lost all my porn.

I'm depressed. :(:(:(:(:(:(

What's the chance of moving the data discs from one drive to another. The power is the only part that fried. The data discs might be intact.

You'll probably have to send it to a data recovery company. HDDs are vacuum sealed, if I remember correctly. So to answer your question: no chance.

What, you mean the platters inside of it? Slim to none. You'd be better off trying to find a new circuit board for the HDD and installing that instead. Even that probably isn't going to work.

I don't think paying $1500 is a good idea when all that has been lost is a couple of ISOs and some porn. Unless there are like, photos, movies etc. that you really cherish, I wouldn't bother with data recovery.

Lesson learned I hope: Back up all your stuff regularly. DVDs work best because they are cheap. Flash Drives are ok as well.

Protip: Don't hotswap internals, they don't usually work when you do it. (Unless it's a RAID or something)

First of all, why the fuck would you hot-swap in the first place?

Inferno
August 12th, 2009, 09:52 PM
Because I'm a idiot and I was working on the computer.
The files aren't worth 1500 bucks. I could recover them on thepiratesyouknowwhat.org. And it's still ironic that the drive I back things up to crashed. I have 2 backup drives but I had formatted and sold the secondary backup drive 2 days ago. I was planning on installing the new drive today. :ugh:

The reason I even tryed the hotswap was because the drive I needed some files on was unplugged and I didn't feel like re-booting and reloading Unreal Ed and all that shit so I was like "I'll just hotplug it. I do it on my Xbox360HDD all the time why wouldn't it work with a ATA drive?"

DURFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

And I don't really care about the porn. It's just sort of funny that I lost all my pr0n3z.

OH NOW YOU TELL ME! HURF!'

edit-

On the road to recovery. I'm re-backing everything on my main drive to the backup drives. Yes drives. That's plural. I just converted my vista drive into a second backup drive cause vista sucks so much.

Yeah, he yanked an ATA hard drive out of a computer while it was running.

People have had video cards, sounds cards, etc. yanked out while the computer is on and it hasn't had any negative effect on the computer. Sometimes, however, it completely fucks everything up. Just because you've gotten away with doing something risky with your hardware a couple of times doesn't mean its safe to do and that bad things aren't going to happen.

Other factors include the durability of the drive and other factors related to that.

There's a reason that companies sell special server-grade backplanes (I believe that's the term) for ATA drives that make them hot-swappable.
