View Full Version : My parent's might buy me a flatscreen

Well, my parents seem to want to get me a flatscreen this year for my birthday. I've denied it for three years... not because I hate LCDs or the companies that make them. I just think they are too expensive, and I'd go through a guilt trip if I accepted the gift. Also, I guess I'm biased because most widescreen monitors just seem smaller than my 17" CRT Trinitron (I know they aren't, but they look that way)... and can't go beyond a certain resolution. /mini-rant/explanation

So, my question, if I got one for under 200, which should I get? If I get it, I'll treat myself to another 8800 GTX and do a triple monitor setup with my two other CRTs on the sides.

If you can manage it, try to get an LG monitor.

I currently have the LG W2252TQ with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio (which, granted, is excessive), and it's one of the best LCD monitors I've come across. Color reproduction is brilliant, contrast/brightness levels are dead on perfect (and adjusted with Displaymate to achieve perfection), and it has a fantastic 2ms response time. Unfortunately, it's over your price range of $200.

Lemme see if I can find something else that'd be decent.

Don't trust contrast ratios...they all hover around 800:1, 1000:1, or maybe 2000:1. Anything that tells you "OVER NINE THOUSSAAAAAAAAND:1" is just market overinflation using different measuring techniques that mean fuck all.

Also, anything LG or Samsung is good. Acer makes some pretty decent LCDs for the dollar now too. Personally, I'd save up $70 extra and go with this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236047).

LG are good, but the best consumer monitors that you can buy are Samsungs. I don't settle for anything less than a good Samsung and as you can see form my PC specs, I'm no PC enthusiast.

I'm not too particular about monitors as long as they work well (AKA, minimal dead/stuck pixels), have the right inputs, and are decent on colours.

In that case, get Samsung since they have superior dead pixel/stuck pixel replacement policies.

Samsung is the best monitor maker hands down.

Asus and Viewsonic monitors are good. I saw a 24" Viewsonic at Frys for 189

I have that monitor for another comptuer, it's a 16:10 ratio. I also have this acer (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009157) that bacon showed me and its ratio is 16:9. I much prefer the 16:9 acer and would reccomend getting that one over the other, only $10 more.

Both acers had no dead pixels and the picture is pretty on them too.

My only beef with that monitor is that I'm paying extra for .5 inches less. I'll go this weekend to the CS House and see if I can find the monitors you guys are mentioning. I have no practical experience of how images would look on these monitors (I probably won't find people running max/zbrush/photoshop, but beggars can't be choosers), so I hope this explains my hesitation.

.5 inches is nothing, the monitor that is 22 inches is 1680x1050 res while the 21.5 inch monitor has a resolution of 1920x1080.

Personally, I'd go with something that has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. Maybe: [1 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009157)][2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009176)]

I don't remember seeing any Acer monitors in CSH, but then again I wasn't paying attention to brands. If you can get out to a computer store and take a look at monitors before the purchase is made that might be beneficial. I have no idea what computer stores are around here though xD.
