Apple’s logo lunacy: 5 previous trademark tiffs (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33280940/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/)

Well, Apple's at it again. The company that never fails to galvanize the masses (http://www.pcworld.com/article/173038/analysts_to_apple_dump_exclusivity_double_iphone_s ales.html) has stirred up a fresh debate with its latest logo controversy (http://www.pcworld.com/article/173106/apple_has_no_monopoly_on_fruit_trademark.html).

Apple, in case you've yet to hear, is taking on Woolworths (http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/173108/apple_challenges_australian_chains_logo_trademark. html) over a new logo the supermarket chain has cooked up. The logo shows a "W" stylized into an abstract apple-like shape, leading Apple to contend the look is too similar to its own apple-shaped symbol.

This isn't the first time Apple's gotten into a fight over its company's beloved image — far from it. Here are five other trademark tiffs Jobs' team has found itself involved in over the years.

Some of the logos shown in the article which Apple has pissed and moaned about aren't even remotely close to their shit. It's a fucking apple...come on, none of them have a byte (c wat I did thar?) taken out of them.

Apple really needs to grow up.

Apple really need to sort themselves out because their trying to pull a fight with anyone and anything that looks like an apple..
Seriously they need to grow a pair and instead of harrasing companies actualy go and make something that will get them more sales in the shops on their computer line.
I went into a pc shop few days ago and the shop had 1 mac, everything else was windows based or linux based.

I don't think Apple realizes how generic a apple really is.

1. It's a fucking apple. Why aren't you suing every tree making them?
2. As if you don't have enough money overpricing your machines.
3. Is this your attempt at being a big boy company?
4. Spend less time on #3 and more time making your sound tools not blow.

The lawsuit against the adult video company is ridiculously stupid:

Umm, you guys need to check your sources. The media is completely blowing this out of proportion.

Please read this and educate yourselves:

Here's what's really going on, outside of the sad media frenzy that surrounds anything Apple does: in both the US and Australian systems, a trademark registration is applied for with the appropriate federal agency -- the USPTO, or, in this case, IP Australia. After a period of review by that office for eligibility, it's then published for other companies to review and potentially oppose because it would cause confusion with their own marks. This is the fundamental essence of the trademark process, and every company with a major mark goes through it several times a year -- it's not a lawsuit, and there's no judge or jury, just the trademark examiner. Sure, there are some potentially meaningful and expensive consequences, but filing and responding to oppositions is something that any trademark attorney does quite frequently, and it's not like Apple's aggressively suing anyone here. It's just part of the process.

We'd also like to note that all these stories today have but a single source, and that Apple actually filed their notice of opposition in March but no one noticed until Woolworths talked to The Age. If we had to bet we'd say this is a tactical move by Woolworth's PR team to churn public opinion before a decision is issued -- and if it is, well, congratulations to them, because it certainly looks to us like the reality of this story has been totally overshadowed by the second, slightly more fictional story the tech media would like to tell. Sure, it'll be big news if Apple's opposition is successful and Woolworths registration is denied -- and we'll obviously cover it if it happens -- but chances are that Woolworths and Apple's highly-paid attorneys are going to quietly go through the trademark process and come out with an agreement, and we'll never hear about this again. Until the next time everyone gets this story wrong.

This isn't like Monster suing anyone who uses the word "Monster" in anything.

It's still a big deal because Apple, Inc. thinks they can stop people from using anything that remotely resembles an apple. They probably would, too, had this not gotten public attention. Sure, they haven't sued, but they filed a complaint against the trademark. Who's to say they still won't stop them?

Apple should change their logo to my avatar...even the uncropped part. It fits their company's image perfectly.
