that we just bought to replace our busted ass .308 carbine. Basically the .308 stopped ejecting shells when you cycled the bolt, it's still operable and still shoots true but it would cost a stupid amount to repair or replace the bolt. So we've decided to retire it to be our "secondary" scoped shooter since it poses a high risk of jamming, and it's a bitch to reload since you've got to shake the spent cartridge out...

So we went to the new Bass Pro Shop today and found this little baby:

And then you just pull the cocking handle back to cycle the bolt or lock it in place depending on the position of the magazine.

It's a Browning BAR LongTrac Stalker 30-06 (http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=002B&cat_id=031&type_id=331) that we've mounted a Leupold VX-II 3-9x40mm adjustable zoom scope (http://www.leupold.com/hunting-and-shooting/products/scopes/vx-ii-riflescopes/vx-ii-3-9x40mm/) on. Maybe I'll be able to bag a third White-Tail deer (got a Doe and a Buck within a few hours last Sunday), a couple Mule deer, and possibly an Elk (3 point or larger only) this season with this bad boy... Did I mention that it's semi-automatic with a four round magazine? Basically it's as good as decked out as Canadian hunting law will allow...

Black and Gray with Gold trim!!! :downsdance:

We were originally going to get a BAR ShortTrack (Oil Finish) in .308 (http://www.browning.com/products/catalog/firearms/detail.asp?value=002B&cat_id=031&type_id=534) but they broke the fucking thing while trying to mount the scope... The Stalker that we have now is better looking, more powerful, and almost $200 more because of that, but they gave it to us for the price of the ShortTrac! :D

My father, we hunt together and I tell him what guns are good and show him how they work, clean them, and maintain them.

This one is actually registered to me because when we bought the ShortTrac that they broke, they had to "buy it" back off of us and then sell us the new one. The registration system doesn't let you buy and sell firearms that quickly, for fear that someone might buy one for someone who shouldn't have one and all that. The other three guns we own (Benelli Super Black Eagle, 308 Carbine, and a 30-30 Lever-Action) are all registered to my father.

that is a very, very nice hunting rifle.
Thanks Coja! It was this or a Benelli R1 (http://www.benelliusa.com/rifles/index.php) synthetic with iron sights, since the Benelli cost almost as much as the BAR and Leupold combined...

God I think I'll fall in love with it for one simple reason, here in Canada you cannot have your firearm loaded in the vehicle while you're hunting... You can see how this may be a problem if we're driving along and see something we can shoot, which is usually how we hunt, driving along trails and cut-lines and such until we see something. Now, I can't tell you how many times I've dropped my magazine or bullets in the vehicle and can't find them until we get out...

Now, this gun lets you load your magazine and keep it attached to the gun so you can jump out and fold the mag in and load it in a second or two. I can tell you that it's a pain to reload while attached to the "floorplate", but that's not a big issue for me.

BAR's alright I guess but you should have gone w/ a MAS-49/56 imo because the 7.5x54mm round is just as good w/ the kind of game you're going to be taking on w/ .30-06 (except maybe the bigger stuff but all that's probably too far north for you), + there are a lot of them that are chambered in 7.62x51mm if you don't like using weird French rounds

Or I could buy a brand new gun instead of an old war era gun in some weird caliber. Now seriously, I live in Canada and constantly go hunting in northern Alberta where there are tons of Elk and Moose... To far north for me? Are you daft? :allears:

The first gun I ever hunted with back when I was 12 was a 30-06, it's a great deer gun as long as you aren't using some wonky ammunition.

I'm not trying to talk shit about the .30-06 because it's a great round, it's just that 7.5x54 is just as capable for taking every single type of game that I have seen you say you hunt as .30-06

also there's absolutely nothing wrong with an "old war era gun" unless you're one of those fools who absolutely HAS to be on THE cutting edge of technology and if so please gtfo

I don't own any guns atm (NY gun laws are shit) but I used to use a MAS-49/56 to hunt with my uncle back in Jersey when I was a kid/teenager so it's prob. just a bias there but I distinctly remember hunting with a BAR aswell and while it was a great gun in of itself the MAS-49/56 has always just seemed better to me

And I'll bet 7.5x54 is harder to find and more expensive than .30-06 as well. As you say, it's just as capable, so why should I consider the unconventional expensive round? Only reason I can think of is to be unique from everyone else, though we've now got a large collection of calibers to choose from... .270, .30-30, .303 British, .308, .30-06, and a 12 gauge Benelli Super Black Eagle for birds and slugs.

However, 7.5x54 probably isn't as bad as our buddies new gun, he just got a brand new Weatherby .30-378 as a gift from some of his friends... Guess how much a box of ammunition is?

$119.99 CAD / $149.99 for the "premium" ammunition. :ohdear:

Can't wait to see what it does to a deer, obviously it's meant for good long 700+ yard shots but we almost always hit around 300-350 yards.

You haven't seen my computer specs have you? I love buying the latest and greatest whenever possible, why? Because it means it's most likely going to last you a long time and function great up until the point in time where you need something new.

I think you may be thinking of an older war era BAR here... Yes the one we picked up is loosely based on that rifle, and I use the word "loosely" for good reason.

computers and firearms are completely different if you apply a school of thought that really only works to electronics to other things like firearms or toasters or whatever then you need help

Really? So you're saying that buying new with the intention of using it for as long as possible without replacing it is a bad idea? And that I'd be much better off buying hand-me-down or used stuff and investing in fixing them up and maintaining them? Sounds like a gigantic waste of money to me, but if you've got the money and time to shop around for decent relics, have at it!

Hey, I'm not saying they aren't good, we were considering purchasing a Benelli R1 rifle instead of what we did... The Browning we have is well priced and built on a tried and true design.

Haven't dealt with Beretta before, because like I said, most are restricted or prohibited and therefore not worth buying... No need to spend that much on something I could only use on a range. Though I haven't dealt with any gun manufactures before either, mainly due to the fact that I've been able to fix every single problem that we've had, or I was able to find a friend that was able to do it.

That does sound fun. Also every good hitman uses a .22. They have enough power to enter the skull, but not enough power to exit it. Instead, they ricochet around inside and destroy the brain.

Every good hitman doesn't divulge the fact that he is or was a hitman, let alone the methods related to how he carries out hits...

Also, the amount of force required to enter the skull is EXTREMELY small depending on the area. Take the back of an eye socket or through an ear as an example, a friend of my dads killed a Moose with a .22 by shooting it through the ear and into the brain.

We don't hunt for sport or trophies, people that do should be shot themselves. We hunt because we love wild meat, and because it significantly reduces the cost of meat groceries.
