Just been reading about this earlier and noticed no one posted here about it.

"In the United States, a new law proposal called The Combating Online Infringement and Counterfeits Act (COICA) was introduced last week, and there will be a hearing in front of the Judiciary Committee this Thursday.

If passed, this law will allow the government, under the command of the media companies, to censor the internet as they see fit, like China does, with the difference that the sites they decide to censor will be completely removed form the internet and not just in the US."

Those suckers passed this as well in Germany...though it only targets child pornography and it only gives out a warning...you can still view the site but they immediately track you.

Obviously this goes against the human rights...no wonder they try to get this through the backdoor.

Well, I'm sure all the American domain companies are pleased knowing that this bill could scare away clients from hosting in the US.

I'm just saying, if this passes, I'm canceling my 1&1 account and finding a Canadian equivalent.

Removed from the internet entirely?

Bahahahahahahahah, that's a good one.

I like the idea of knocking bad crap off the internet permanently, but the problem is, what defines bad? Who's to say that something doesn't deserve to exist? Sure, there's tons of things that we can all pretty much agree shouldn't exist (like child porn), but there's going to be a grey area that a lot of legitimate things will end up on and it'll cause more damage than it's worth.

The problem is not the definition about "what is bad" but that the government has even the possibility to do this.

The websites are hosted by companies, and the companies are based in countries and are bound by their laws, yes?

I hate politicians that try to do this. Sure, some things need to be removed (you know what), but I hate seeing the government having control over something like the Internet. It's definitely a violation of Freedom in the United States.

They just can't stand freedom wherever it exists.

As long as it doesn't get past the houses...

There are more important things the senate and house need to worry about. Mainly, will the democrats have a job in November?
