I like the style- it's definitely Halo-esque. I can't quite figure out the layout/gameplay style, but it's certainly promising. Is this your first map? Or just the first you've posted here?

The door texture looks oddly grungy... otherwise it's not that bad for a first map. (:

Is it going to be totally enclosed or are there going to be "outdoor" sections. It's hard to tell from the pics you posted weather you still need to do walls or what's happening.
Hope it's not going to be all grey btw!

I'm not sure if this has really been done before to this extent or if it would be suitable to how this map was designed, but I really think giving this a space sky similar to the colorful one in Halo Reach would be awesome. This could be a Forerunner space station or satellite flying around a shield world or something, with good looking energy shields protecting the players from vacuum.

0:55 - end has some good scenes of the nebula and gas clouds apparently surrounding Reach. Stuff like that being seen where the sky is and maybe a bit of a shield world in the background would look sweet. Actually, just try and replicate this picture in the sky but with more nebulas and gas clouds floating around somewhere as well:

Wow, it looks epic. I have one small thing though, and it's just me, but I don't like the upgraded scenery and devices you have set up. They should just be the original Halo assests imo.

But hey, it's your map. You shouldn't take crap from anyone else (me) if you like it the way you like it. Great work either way!

Well, there aren't any stock halo standing teleporters, or doors that are the appropriate size for this, so not much I can do about that!

Anyway, if I can get a hold of jcap, we might have some gamenights soon (today?) on this~

Alright so here's the plan. Remove grenades on spawn. Remove Rocket reserve ammo Lower sniper reserve ammo to 4, from 8. Make it so you can't jump onto the bridge from below. Add covie boxes and shit. Make all teleporters two way. Switch OS and sniper rifle positions.

That's because this was just a play test build. The graphical portion of Sels maps are usually the last thing to be completed since they're not really important.

However, add those holo-consoles around the platform under the bridge that I mentioned Sel.

The fact that some of you seem to think I'm throwing a temper tantrum because I chose to fight for the name for my map politely instead of just ignoring SeL leads me to believe that you 1) aren't paying attention to anything but your own contorted views, and 2) that no amount of discussion will persuade you otherwise.

SeL may be more experienced, and I recognize he has seniority over me because of his experience, but that doesn't mean I'm evil for defending my desire to keep my map named as is.

My map is no longer shat on steroids. For the last time, people, stop using that in your arguments. I'm unclear as to what part of 'Requiem is no longer a rip, copy, or remake of Extinction' you are misunderstanding. It started out as a plan to overhaul the Extinction concept; nothing more.

Again, I'm not whining. Say again: I am not whining. If I need to repeat it for you a third time, then all hope is lost for you. I chose to confront this issues. What if SeL releases his Requiem, and I release mine, with neither of us giving thought to each other's work. Would you not say that is disrespectful and rude, on both of our parts? Thus, I have brought this up now, instead of ignoring it, as SeL has done.

Newbkilla, how about you go back and read my response to SeL before saying all I have to do is rename my scenario file? You might learn something, and can avoid coming off as a fool who is making inaccurate/incomplete assertions.

Sel's map is of higher quality to you. In my opinion, my map is better than his. SeL will feel the same way (about his map). You can't use personal opinion as a concrete base for determining who has rights to the map name.

This is true. However, you cannot extend this statement to my map, as it is not a copy, rip, or remake of Extinction. I used to love that map, but it attracts some of the worst players in CE. Too noobtastic, hence this weird long and drawn out process that is called multiplayer design, which you seem to have conveniently overlooked. Ask yourself this: does it seem logical that I would go through all this effort of making a fantastic map, just to have it left to rot by leaving everything up to the noobtacular par of Extinction? If you're getting an answer other than 'no', you have problems with some process of your logic.

I'm sorry. Do you have access to my hard drive? No? So you don't know where I have references to Requiem. Not to mention, I've been operating with Requiem as the name for over two years.

Perhaps, but it does alert the public to your intent. You can say you've been working on a map named Requiem for 10 years if you want. I get you had the name first (in this case), but no one else can vouch for you (again, in this case), and you can't (more than likely) offer concrete proof. This is how most things of this nature work.

Let me make this clear: a lot of thought is going into tailoring the tags to help coerce a tactical application of effort on the part of the player. Translation: I'm working hard to cut down the noobiness of the palettes. If you can't accept that, fine. But stop bringing it up, because this map is no longer a copy, rip, remake, or anything else other than a large map with some smaller minimaps within.

I understand the majority of the CE community is under-aged and incredibly nooby at playing the game. But they'll still have maps like Extinction and Coldsnap to go noob to their heart's content. Requiem is for intelligent, strategic and tactical players. Ive spent a lot of time not only considering how to tailor the tags to this style of gameplay, but also how to tailor the BSP to discourage camping in places, using any one vehicle or weapon throughout the game, and so on, so forth.

If you don't like big maps, that's your opinion and I won't try and convince you to leave it. But quit whining about mine. I'll take your criticism, but you haven't given me anything other than a modified statement of your hatred for large maps filled with nooby palettes. If you have something specific related to the map itself, lay it on me.

I came here to figure out who was naming their map Requiem. Holy cow. It was supposed to be as simple as 'Hey, I wanted to use Requiem for my large map, but you want to use it for your small map. What should we do to rectify this so we don't both release a map with the same name?'.

Your cocky self decided, for some reason or other, to turn it into some sort of big deal. Grow up already. I really don't understand why you're so worried, or what the hell your problem is, unless there's something under the surface going on here. You don't see me getting arrogant about my map, awesome as it is. It's better than yours in my own opinion, largely because it is my own labor, but also because I just don't liked close-quarters map designs. Too inviting of noob tactics. But in either case I'm not about to go preaching to the community about how my map is so much better than yours.

If you can't have even the common decency to be polite about all this, then whatever. You continue making your 'oh so special' map, and I'll continue mine. Obviously, you'll be done before me, as I still have quite a lot of work to do before alpha release. If this whole name issue can't be resolved due to your grotesque inaction, then do whatever you want, because it seems that's all that matters to you, anyway.

To those suggesting one or both of us rename our maps (and that are doing so politely), I'm considering the notion. If SeL decides his almighty superior map is to be named Requiem and gets it out before me, obviously, there's nothing I can do about it. I'll rename my map to something entirely different that will in no way bear any relation to Requiem or a production from SeL.

Since SeL will likely continue to stand idly as his map and its name are challenged, let this be an end-all: quit whining about the name. Move discussions about my map to my thread, and keep criticizing this one on this thread. Don't mix them up any more than they already are.

Sel, just come up with a good name and don't tell anyone except extremely trustable people what you may want it to be... It should fit whatever design the map ends up going with imo, if you go with the space station style that could influence the name... Etc.

Teleporters are now two way

Grenades on spawn have been removed

2 Shields in mid

Rocket launcher reserve ammo removed (was 2)

Sniper reserve ammo lowered to 4 (was 8)

Swapped OS with Sniper Rifle

Raised the bridge, you can no longer jump onto it from the lower area.

Playerclipped more areas.

I did not DO anything first of all.
For one, you do not have valid proof and this forum has taken a lead drop since you became moderator.
SFloyd was the one that was in the IRC and posted the Ip of the server to places such as 4chan and a few random irc channels on gamesurge.

And even if it was me, you took action in your usual immature manner of trying to press the "eject" button more than once.

SFloyd was more than willing to claim credit for the greifings since he doesn't give two fucks about this community but regularly joins the IRC to sift through the debris of a community you are tyrannizing.

But wait, you wouldn't take the chance of being proven wrong.
You wouldn't want to put on a show if you know you have a chance at screwing up.

B) I never asked to be a moderator, one of the existing moderators recommended that I should be promoted. TheGhost and jcap then approved this after I was extended an invitation.

C) jcap was the one who made the decision to ban DEE. He and I both had proof that DEE's Minecraft player destroyed blocks, SFloyd was also found guilt and consequently banned as well for the same thing. In addition one of the two allegedly invited the other to the server and then that player proceeded to invite people from other message boards and 4chan to come grief our server.

D) Griefing is generally a one time ban offense on almost every Minecraft server I've ever played on or heard of, jcap and I fully support that policy on the Modacity Minecraft Server. I guess jcap decided that it was also serious enough to warrant a site-ban.

E) Interestingly enough, the most common comment I've heard from the staff is "at least he [Freelancer] still takes the site business seriously". If users can't follow our very simple to understand Acceptable Use Policy they can feel free to bugger off. If they're leaving because they have some kind of personal vendetta against me or because it's a cool bandwagon to jump on, they're free to do that as well.

Now, any posts not about Selentic's new map (currently named Requiem) in this thread will be met with an appropriate Infraction and soft deletion to prevent any more thread shitting.

Alright so here's the planned changes from today's test.

4 frag Grenade spawns in each base

Move the teleporter in the bottom mid into the center of the platform, remove camo, replace os with camo/os powerup.

More cover on the bridge.

Other than that, we should be pretty much good to go.

Ugh- portals frigging blow. I found during Precipice that portalling inclusively works better than exclusively. I.e. Portal so that you move from area to area, rather than sealing off sections so they won't render. Idk if that makes sense, but it worked for me a bit.

What higuy said. Sorry, I didn't see your response until now, or I would have elaborated.

What I've found is that the game is better at only rendering a section that you're in versus not-rendering a section you're not in.
That sounds bizarre, but take a look back at the tutorial map in the HEK. They portalled the hallway so that when the player is standing in it, everything else disappears. When I tried to do the reverse in Precipice, i.e. portal an area so it would disappear when I -wasn't- in it, the game gave me bizarre visual portal errors. Therefore I suggest portalling inclusive areas first, and then the areas like higuy suggested. Also exactportals are the best for everything ever.

Note that the entire art is totally random to a point, so what worked for me might turn out to not work at all for your map :ugh:

Because it renders BSP in multiple passes. I've seen that it renders lightmaps first then does a second pass for textures, so it makes sense that it does extra passes for other shader features such as reflections. As for over 100k, thats including all non bsp triangles as well, so scenery, weapons, sky, etc. The final tri count for your BSP at that particular camera point is 74224. You could turn off reflection cube maps on geometry that you dont really notice them on to confirm this, could help to reduce your tri count.

This is pretty much as low as I can get it without seriously compromising the visual appeal of the map so any other suggestions?

Also I'm curious what fog is, there's no fog in the map, aside from the skybox fog, and after removing the skybox, it still lists 14k tris being used for it. As far as I'm concerned that's easily 14k tris that could be cut out, if anyone knows how.

I confirm this. I've had this in the past. It's like when you have multiple materials overlapping each other, at least, that's what caused my errors a long time ago (before I got lazy).

Honestly, though, the only thing you are gaining with that new model is an extra helping of aliasing artifacts. But if you're just messing around, that's fine.

Right now the plan is more to keep this lighting, because I absolutely love it to pieces, and outfit the player bipeds when they get completed with dynamic lights, and a higher than normal specular so that they're significantly easier to pick out from the environment at a distance, before they start shooting.

Sel, based on the map design I still think you should visually seal the "walkway" area with some kind of force field. Don't make it block projectiles or anything but just make it look like that entire perimeter walkway is actually sealed, given that there are doors leading to it. Do the same thing with the upper level where the flags are, then make the entire center area an exposed vacuum with appropriate sound effects (muffled).

We're starting ensuring the hrh biped works this weekend, and then final testing will begin next week.

The only issue that could really arise at this point is that the dynamic lighting caused by players will not be good enough for identifying players on the map, and I'll have to re-run lightmaps to make the map brighter instead.
