View Full Version : Own gaming company mbmb?

I was thinking earlier - who here wants to get a job in game development? I know that Btd and Dane live (comparatively) close to me, and Tweek is thinking of coming out here on holidays, as is Reaper... so you guys wanna see what happens and possibly either start our own company or find one around here we can all go work for?

As for you guys thinking about this kind of thing who are living in the US, trust me, now is the time to bail and come to Australia :p

Just thought that'd be pretty cool, that's all. Ideas? Opinions?

Rescudo
November 26th, 2006, 06:25 AM
Yeah, that would be cool... although I live in Norway. That's about on the other side of Earth, and me being 15 probably means that's not going to work very well. Sowwy :(

Maybe we'll be established and churning out games by the time you can move (if you want to), or if we do really well you could head up our Europe office. :p

>:U I r wants to go into the game development industry. Thing is, I'm not that great. So, atm, I am forcing myself to go through this huge book on game character development, as that's what I want to do.

kk you can do bipeds.

Well, assuming we do start this... you can model bipeds, as well as weapons and vehicles (to an extent). Blake does maps, not sure what else, Dane skins, and I do weapons. Rescudo does maps and some coding... but he'd have to move across the world. If Tweek came over, we have a weapon/vehicle/possibly other stuff modeler, and if we could abduct Snaf, more weapons and maps...

Guys, this could win. :O

I mean...

Great idea.

Most of the big companies started with 2 people doing games in high-school.

Well anyway I wanted to get something with programming going on.Not sure if it will be related to Game Development though.

Man, working for a game company, especially with guys from here, would be more than awesome.

Skills mean nothing if you don't have a decent story to back it. Also there is the question of startup money, getting dev kits, or an engine, there is a lot more work to starting a game company then lets say starting a band.

Its better to get into a already made company with a game, or do what a lot of us Halo modders did, mod games and make something great that really stands out, then get into a company.

That's what Strider is for. Doesn't he have like 20 pages of backstory for vertigo City?

[gx]Shadow
November 26th, 2006, 01:14 PM
That would be so pimp, I want in, but after college is done. We have this incubator program at my school where they help students get their companies up and running. I am gonna go check that out when I start next year.

Zeph
November 26th, 2006, 03:13 PM
It depends on how you want to go about doing it. You could be like Stider, sling together random people off the internet with no real skills whatsoever and call it a company or you could get to know people who can do things, start working together with them to a great degree, start finishing and releasing products, and decide you want to try to get together to start a real studio.

I'll give you a bit of advice. If you're going out on your own, you need an engine that you're allowed to use and sell things on along with a programmer to suit it to your needs. You'll also need a fully realized project to start out on immediately. You don't want to be paying people to just think all day do you? Honestly, in this day and age, I suggest starting out by getting hired. Learn all the things you can from there before you start out on your own. You'll be able to avoid a lot of problems that way.

rossmum
November 27th, 2006, 12:39 AM
True. I'll have to see what's on around here - don't feel like another international move, especially to the US right now >_>

Skills... well, I'm nothing too special so far, but I'm working on it... the others are all pretty good, and given some people who are good at the other aspects of game development we should be alright.

As for backstories? Bah, covered. My English teacher just handed me back my latest short story (20 pages give or take a few) the other day with the comment, "Go find a publisher". :p

cough mbmb?

:) pweez?

Rescudo
November 27th, 2006, 09:30 AM
Heh, I think this could work. We just need an idea for a game, so perhaps we should just do the thinking over the internet? Should be doable. :)

Emmzee

We should start with a Source mod, as the engine is already there and the Devkit is free. It'll provide valuable experience.

legionaire45
November 27th, 2006, 08:47 PM
I was about to say, learn an engine like Source in and out just to get some experience. Make a mod for that and then try and write your own engine.

I am fiddling around with learning this (http://msdn.microsoft.com/directx/XNA/default.aspx) and this (http://www.blitzbasic.com/) in order to write an engine for an RTS I plan on making solo (not sure if I can do it, I mainly am a texturer and sort of modeler). I have two books, one on each but me being 15 and going to a LAUSD high school in California where the teachers don't teach very well I have little time to read them. Break is coming up and I can read them.

Read my mind. I want to do some serious DoD modding to make it as realistic as possible. Also, a pre-Halo game would be cool, exploring the Marines' campaign as described in the books.

I wanted to do that, if you want I can help as a newby texturer or maybe even a modeller if I get better. I could help with tagging maybe as well unless you guys have that figured out.

I'll update this post with some more stuff once I get to school tomorrow, but heres the one thing I have on me:
http://img1.putfile.com/thumb/11/33304483398.jpg (http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=4133970)

I made it in my spare time a few days ago and added the parallel and serial ports and also the jumper block just now. Not quite finished but it looks nice to me. made in photoshop, I used a wiring diagram as reference for all the ports. I did an ok job with the USB but failed at the serial and parallel. Jumper block is vomit too. But you get the idea. I hope.

Um.. 2000 all the way up to XP is pretty much the same as 95, except the way the battle systems are coded, and tile overlays are made. Really not that hard. And check out this place if ya need help:
