-The hammer model didn't rip properly, those UVs are definately wrong.
-The origins look really painful on the wrists - the arm positioning would indicate a more slanted pose of holding it. They also seem to be leaning outwards, anlso rather uncomfortably. I can't see someone swinging a hammer effectively holding it like that.
-The hammers are WAY bigger than that in h3, let alone h2 where it's as big as Tartarus himself.

I'd first of all scale up the model some so it doesn't look like a toy. Then, I'd have it at closer to a 45 degree angle, with the bottom more on the left. The hammer would have the head slightly inwards, while the end would be sticking slightly outwards. Origins make or break an animation set.

Nice work clad , keep it up :D

I'm sorry, but that doesn't look very appealing at all:

- The shaders have no reflection, nor detail, nor anything for that matter. (with the exception of the diffuse)
- The scale is wrong. The ratio between the scale of Halo 1 to Halo 2 models is 100:1, for future reference.
- The animations look really unnatural and awkward. For one, the fingers on the right hand are going every which way and the wrist is in an uncomfortable position.

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 03:24 PM
yeah im bad at fingers. its hard to tell which side of the finger is facing which direction in max. ill fix those up later, as for the multipurpose and cubemaps and things, theyre not there because i have absolutely no texturing ability and the only things i have that are ripped are the model and texture. i scaled it down on purpose because i thought it would look odd in fp, with a massively thick shaft on the hammer, and seeing as chief's hands can only wrap so far around it this makes more sense to me. as for the wrists... you both really think they look bad? i used my own warhammer (stfu i do have a warhammer) for a comparison, imagining that it was about 100x heavier.

September 2nd, 2007, 03:37 PM
The hands are definately out of place. I can't see a powerful swing coming from that.

Take a video of yourself holding (idle) and swinging your warhammer and then use that as a reference.

Looks like the 3rd person model, someone should make a 1st person model. Also, UV's look wrong :\

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 04:09 PM
yeah... i didnt do them.

anyways i guess this is an update

new reticle, made by donut.http://i188.photobucket.com/albums/z295/iron_clad_photo/fist-of-rukt.jpg

The pole could be a bit rounder :x

ICEE

yeah but it was bungies model so if the pole is squared, then its true to the game.

I doubt there would be a first person model.. then again there was a flood juggernaut.

If you want a proper multi, you can get one by using the Alpha of the h2 bitmap and making it the R and B channels of the multi.

Also, I hope you're playing around with more origins, those ones just won't do.

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 06:03 PM
yeah i am actually about to begin working on the origins. ive considered everyone's comments and ill revise them justly... also m6deep is making me some shaders, and i trust in his abilities

http://gallery.filefront.com/ironcladfiles//751962/

sorry but i cant access photobucket anymore...

anyways, (teh lag), does this look like a better position? it is slightly taller than the chief, and to long for you to see the left hand but it IS firmly grasping the handle

Your hand is holding too high up on the hammer, and I'd rotate the hammer horizontally still more. You should be able to see both hands in the origins. Hell, I might even make some to show you. It also looks like you're not using an IK rig - search the forums, it makes animating alot easier.

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 06:50 PM
i am using an ik rig but in this particular screenshot theyre not entirely visible. the hammer is MASSIVE and its hard to get both hands in the picture while still being vision efficient but i will try.

as for teekup...

http://www.farfromneutral.com/exodus/wp-content/uploads/2007/03/o_rly.jpgits basically a perfect recreation. better not tell donut that you dont like it because he'll probably pour bleach down your cat's throat... [/inside joke]

TeeKup
September 2nd, 2007, 06:53 PM
It needs to be bigger and more detailed, I could have made that thing in like 7 minutes. Do something better and more original.

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 06:56 PM
what are you talking about now? reticle or the hammer? if you mean the hammer... its ripped from h2 so dont give me that o.O

No, the reticule. Make it better and more original than the Halo 3 one. >:I

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 06:59 PM
well i could ask donut about it but i dont like to ask him for to much. plus im rather satisfied with the reticle, but i can make it bigger. also, if your so certain that it should be different, feel free to draw one up for our reference. lol

Roughly 30 mins origins, 30 mins animating. I'd never accept it as final, but it's an example. I'd go on tweaking it for another hour or so, but I don't really fell like it. Hope it helps you :).

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 07:33 PM
ah, a good animation. i like it, you did a good job. however a side swing like that wouldnt fit my plans for the tags, but watching it i believe i learned something about animating, a strategy for returning the weapon to the origins.

Sever
September 2nd, 2007, 07:46 PM
Make an original reticle. This is not the H3 Gravity Hammer, this is the Fist of Rukt. They are two different versions. the Fuel Rod Gun and the Fuel Rod Cannon have different reticles. This should too.

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 07:58 PM
this is not your fist of rukt, its mine. but seeing as the h3 gravity hammer my friend has been working on uses this reticle, I will change this if i get a better one. dont count on it

Your first statement makes my cringe. I hate it when people use that statement. Sure its yours but it is a good suggestion.

Also I don't get what you mean by "I will change this is I get a better one, don't count on it." That doesn't make any grammatical sense in like 10 different ways. O_________o

Listening to others is key to your sucess. If you cannot accept or consider valid suggestions, you will not go far. Considering you said your melee/attack is very different from mine, and mine is based on H3's, you may wish to make a different reticle to relfect the different hammer trajectory.

^ @ Killa, why would you need shot tags for something so small as a reticle...?

Ki11a_FTW

Actually no, its Bungie's. You just ripped it like you said, so don't start claiming it.:haw: I suggest you dump that little attitude off somewhere kid, that will get you into some bad situations.

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 08:30 PM
i edited my grammer. i meant to say if not is. lol. and the main reason i say that is because i REALLY like the reticle. besides lag, you cant say i am unable to accept others criticisms. thats the reason i made the thread! and the pm i sent you. but i suppose my error here was updating the thread with the reticle, because i didnt make it and i didnt really have the right to put my friend's work up on a thread designed to generate criticism on my work. also teekup... when did i take a self centered attitude?

Hotrod
September 2nd, 2007, 08:36 PM
This is looking good, too bad it's ripped though... oh well. Anyways, I think that you should try making the model a bit better, as in make it smoother and rounder, especially he handle. Oh, and I see that you have a Shadow in-game by looking at the most recent picture, any chances of seeing any of that any time soon?

TeeKup
September 2nd, 2007, 08:36 PM
When you made that stuck up response to a valid suggestion. I also edited my post, not so much self centered, just a bad attitude.

ICEE
September 2nd, 2007, 08:40 PM

thank you. anyways i just reanimated the hammer for a fifth time, only to get it in game and find that i hate them. lawl. so im going to redo the swinging and the melee... i personally like my pose though it could be better... i worked on it for about 45 minutes, wish i had a device to record it

teh lag
September 3rd, 2007, 07:37 AM
First : if you're going to rapidshare so many things, at least make them all one file. Having to wait so long between downloads is really annoying.

Now onto buisness. The melee (which is the only one I've seen for far) was very robotic and unnatural... there are probably better ways to hit with the base of the hammer as well. You should take no mroe than 5 frames tops to reach your "endpoint" in a melee animation unless it's very complex. You also show no force in the animation. I don't see how that could cause real pain to someone, especially in a half-ton suit of armor with energy shields. The change in hand position (left hand) is also odd - it should remain firmly placed right on the hammer's grip.

Edit : The same lack of force is evident in the fire - you're just lowering it fast, not swinging it.

Superman
September 3rd, 2007, 09:14 AM
How do you plan on making it lunge to the ground and hurt everyone in a certain vicinity

Ki11a_FTW
September 3rd, 2007, 09:46 AM
you make a effect tag :-3, thats what i did

ICEE
September 3rd, 2007, 10:41 AM
actually lag, i did make the melee reach its end in exactly 5 frames. and the "fire" hes not bashing with it, hes lowering it quickly and using the gravity pulse. ive already redone both of them as of last night and ill have new vids of them at some point.

but really, in your opinion ( the whole of the people who actually read this post ) what MAKES a good "hitting" animation? what MAKES it look like hes really hitting? i believe whatever it is i have the ability to make it happen, i just need some guidance to get me started

as for making it throw things, ive already got that working. the effect tag needs some finetuning though, as it will occasionally throw you too o.O

Stormwing
September 3rd, 2007, 07:28 PM
A or C, personally. The angle needs to be high enough so that the weight of the hammer actually makes a difference on the strength of it's impact. I'm not a big fan of the Halo 3 angle in retrospect, but if you want it accurate, put it somewhere between B and C, but closer to C. The hammer's at about a 45 degree angle in that screenshot.

On that note, the head of the hammer should be further up as well. Yknow, the lower your hands, the stronger the swing and all.

edit: yeah, imo 1 hand would be perfectly fine.

ICEE
September 3rd, 2007, 07:42 PM
good. ill use my own warhammer to help... *goes to get warhammer*

after a few minutes of extensive warhammer-playing-with (technical term lol) ive made the following discoveries

the right hand should start very near the hammer head, for greater control while carrying it, with your left hand nearer to the bottom, BUT when you swing it you slide your right hand down the pole, meeting the left hand, giving you a wide swing.

wide swing = happy swing = powerful swing

the halo 3 one actually makes a good pose, no matter how unnatural it looks in fp, the hands completely move during the swing

if you dont believe me about these things, try it with a broom, imagining the broom head is heavy

THEORY AS TO WHY EXPERIENCED ANIMATORS DONT LIKE THE HAND NEAR THE HEAD: experienced animators are used to guns. this is a much bigger weapon and it isnt at all the same as animating a melee.

ICEE
September 6th, 2007, 08:22 PM
yeah. and teekup, the handle thickness was my reason for scaling it down in the first pic on page 1 but nooooo people didnt like that. so yeah its thick. besides it was made for brutes not for chiefs, so theres really NO possible way for it to be natural in his hands. man was not meant to lift something as tall as he. lol anyways i wish it could be thinner too...

as for updates i guess its basically done. the melee needs some touchups because his fingers pass through it just a tad but other than that it just needs to be tagged properly
