So, what do you guys think? Am i worthy of releasing this as the topic says above :P.

This is like my 5th model.

not worthy of release, but noteworthy in the fact that you were able to model, decently texture and compile the map. keep working hard and you'll have a good map sometime. i'd say you've got some potential.

next time, try the more complex forerunner shapes.

spline modeling some hallways out could have been nice but please dont release!! okay map for a first timer.

Stole the words right out of my mouth.

You've got potential, all you really need is more detail in your modeling.

oh yeah...i think you guys are looking based on the model and stuff.

This map has music in secret room. All gametypes work. Has a rocket launcher that isnt over powered. no falling damage for slide.

I feel that this map is alot better than alot of peoples first maps, which is what i think it good. I am not saying "Oh yeah i made this...so its is absolutely leet." because i know its not.

Simple, yet effective.

You by far, single handedly, took something so easy to make, and made it sexy. Gratz

Dear, PopeAK49

As your lawyer, and adviser I would advise that you read the rules on spamming located here:

The comment in this post:
http://www.h2vista.net/forums/showpost.php?p=178372&postcount=8

Was unnecessary and served no purpose to the development of the thread.btw I'm not a mod

In other news, I still think you have a great potential at map making, by any chance did you follow the HEK tutorial that came with the kit? Or something else... :eyesroll:

I didnt really use it. like i was messing around and got some help making scenery. so i decided to tackle a map. only i forgot how to skin during the process. :P (didnt set material ids.) so like i havnt follow a tut all the way. Snafubar gave me some tutorials but i just skimmed them, and decided to stay away from plane modeling. so i create vertices, than create faces. :D This map took me 3 weeks to complete.

Kalub

Not bad, you'll get the general idea behind plane modeling soon, it mostly just dragging edges, good luck.

Wait, are you guys serious? Decently textured? Sexy? Potential?

This map is one of the many standard maps that clog halomaps.org. It's a box with like 4 textures.

Isn't this just standard HEK tutorial stuff?

He makes a box with ramps and you say he could be an awesome map maker?

I mean, it's a great effort, but for a first map, it's hardly meritable. I've seen some pretty fucking amazing first maps (not just referring to halo) but I know everyones no genious, but you shouldn't lie to people.

Basically, heres what I have to say.

The map is complete meh, in all areas. Keep going and motivate yourself to be better, prove this asshole wrong. Everyone has the potential to make amazing and great things. It all comes down to how much you think and how much effort and time you apply into learning and building your skills, and building the content.

A great first map? Fuck no?

A good start? Yes.

well it's a fucking terrible piece of shit, no doubt.

but lets ignore that fact for a second, and you'll see that it's ALOT better than most of the bullshit you see posted here, levels in 2 tectures, with uvs that make no sense whatsoever, or are mostly ripped geometry.

this thing actually has decent UV's, that make the mao bearable to watch.
beats my first map. my first map was a box with some gay extrusions just to get an idea of the whole process.

good map, god no

good first map as a start, yea, but keep working on it, because it's still shit ;)

A good start? Yes.

He is certainly getting there, and at least it seems better than the tessellated box maps. :(

DaneO'Roo

Well yeah, but really, it's extremely hard to fuck the uv's up on those particular textures.

i think you have done a good job. the layout is pretty good for a small map, and you are know. You have made some custom content (bitmaps) so that is also good. You have modified the rocket launcher tags which will help you to learn how the weapons work. And you have scaled the textures to fit the model. Alot of new mappers dont do that, they just bang the texture on.

You also have managed to get it working ingame and with all game types without needing alot of help because i havnt seen a topic on these forums that you have made.

So good work.

I agree not really worthy of release because its too simple, maybe if you want to play with a few people you know just to get an idea of how game play would work, just for future insight into how to make a more complex map layout next time. As for the production quality I would say its rather very good considering its your first map, the lighting is nice and the texturing is getting there.

The model is just too simple to be worthy of releasing though, try working on a more complex map layout, and also work hard to modeling more complicated structures learn how to turn those boxes into rooms, then you'll be well on your way to making some good maps.

Your off to a great start :) keep practicing.

EDIT There is no rule about posting pictures of a first map though, and the new people need to anyway, otherwise they'll never get good constructive criticism.

Andrew_b
October 24th, 2007, 05:37 PM
Thanks for all the criticism. Snafubar really knows my background about my first model spray can, so i think i can say this is wayyy better than anyone would think i could do just looking at my first model.

I read some posts, This is my first map. This isnt my first modded map. I was the co-creator of the map TargetPractice so i know what to do when it comes to modding. I am working more on detail. If i had alot of freetime i would probably add alot more detail, just i dont.

Thank you for not flaming me like on other forums *cough*halomaps*cough*.

You've got knowledge and curiosity, you are modest and seem to take criticism well, and you were willing to make use of the basics that were given to you.

You've got all you really need to be a good mapper, and in time you will see massive improvement in your work.

I strongly recommend you do not release the map though, I think I speak for most mappers here when I say that releasing your first map is something you regret. I know I sure as hell do.

Oh god, do I regret releasing my first map....

October 24th, 2007, 05:42 PM
For your level, this is certainly good. It's way more appealing than most beginner maps out there. The more you learn the better you'll become. You're off to a nice start.

Andrew_b
October 24th, 2007, 05:44 PM
Well, ok. You guys might not care for the model, but the map is pretty cool. Does anyone want to try it? Ill post a link if anyone does.

Not really, make the hallways less boring. Use chamfer, and overall add more detail.

This has potential, so make it better before you release it.

Andrew_b
October 24th, 2007, 07:40 PM
The Bsp is finished...Im not updating it, it is finished. Secret room has more detail on hallways than the main map.

It's the quintessential first map many try to make and most fail to. You've now established that you know what you're doing and can reach for greater things. However, I highly recommend you do not release this.

Sel
October 24th, 2007, 08:15 PM
Its his choice to release it, no one will really play it.

Of course the whole reason I released my first map, which utterly failed, was to get at the people who go about trying to make maps, and never get it to work, just so I could laugh in their faces :D

Hey looks, I made a map, and youve got shitty BG mods :D

Unless it becomes something special, no.

Ki11a_FTW
October 24th, 2007, 08:34 PM
I highly doubt theres much people, if any, who want to play it, pretty good for a first i say. Work on your forunner architexture (sorry for spelling) and you might be able to actually make something people will play.

Andrew_b
October 24th, 2007, 11:17 PM
ok i will need to practice. I was using modeling parts of my house. Like in secret room the main room part...That roof is from my bedroom...uhh thats the only thing from my house :p

I will try to practice, just it takes a while for me to model because im slow, and my time is very limited (school, life.)

While the map has gameplay potential, two things are killing it:

It's a small map. People on Halo PC/CE tend to prefer larger maps, especially with vehicular combat. Every time I go into a server and the map changes to Longest, Prisoner, Chiron TL34, etc, people bitch, say the map sucks, and then quit.
It has a secret room. Many people tend to see maps only for the easter eggs they contain, and it would come down to at least 1/3-1/2 of the people playing your map are hijacking public games to go on easter egg hunts. Best example: Yoyorast Island.

While this is a great beginner map, and this thread is essentially the fucking role model of all first timer map threads ever made, the map shouldn't be publicly released. Just rar it up and toss it into the corner of your backup drive for the one day years from now when you find it and are like "oh shit, I remember this!"

Weren't you one of the people telling me how wrong I was when I complained about yoyorast island for that very attribute? :raise:
