About six months ago, in about mid-July, the Delta Halo UI Project was started. At first, it was meant to be nothing more than a facelift of the default UI with a new map in the background. As time went on, the UI began to evolve into an entire overhaul of the user interface.

When the project was announced and the first screenshots of the project were revealed to the public, it instantly caught many people’s attention. Being the first of its kind to go the extra mile and do a complete overhaul of everything, the attention quickly grew.

Unfortunately, once September came around, things began to slow down. With summer coming to a close and school starting back up again soon, work was slowed down almost to a complete stop. However, while it became increasingly difficult to coordinate schedules between the Eastern Seaboard and New Zealand time zones, work slowly continued.

Today you are presented with our latest milestone in the project. As of a few hours ago, we are proud to announce that we have reached Beta 2 of the Delta Halo UI Project. The graphical user interface is complete, unless otherwise required to modify due to a bug or a disagreement.

In addition to the latest milestone also comes some announcements. First, we would like to announce that the GUI is not only being applied to the Delta Halo lake scene, but to L33T’s recreation of Mombasa, or the Halo 2 UI. While the level is not L33T’s and rather Bungie’s, he has spent a great deal of time working on getting it in-game. With L33T working on his own Halo 2 mod for Halo CE, this will add the finishing touch to his project. In addition, people will now have a choice in the matter as to what level they would like as their background.

In addition to the extra level, we are also announcing that we decided to venture off from the UI, and look a little more at singleplayer and multiplayer. Being that the tags for the pause menus are contained within the maps, the GUI does not show up if you are anywhere but the main menu. Once the main menu is released, select people will have the option of replacing the default pause menu with the new one. Screenshots of both of these announcements are below.

Sounds and music have also been finalized in this build. The music tracks are Beholden, Peril, Halo (full version), Road to Voi, Impend, and Leonidas. We believe the tracks we chose for the Delta Halo version of the UI will capture the moment and add to the Halo universe theme.

Without further ado, we present you with the pictures and a run through of some of the major changes we have made.

After starting Halo, the first thing you will notice is the fade and blur effect into the screen where you are prompted to “Press Enter to Continue”. After pressing enter, you are greeted with a redesigned main menu. In addition to the new images and layout, notice the new cursor, also visible in the other screenshots.

Choosing campaign from the main menu will bring you to the new level selection screen, followed by the difficulty selection. Completely new map images in addition to the

From there, you may select where you would like to go. If you happen to choose to join a game, you will be delivered to the new lobby.

If you choose to start your own game, either LAN or Internet, you’re presented with the map selection screen, also with completely new level pictures.

Continuing down the path to creating a new game, or if you choose to edit a gametype, you are given your list of gametypes to choose from.

Going back to the main menu, choosing settings will bring you to the new settings screen. A check for updates button has been moved to here, so you are no longer prompted to check for an update every single time you want to enter the server lobby.

Choosing to edit your player’s options will give you this screen.

If you want to change your controller settings, the previously horrid menu now flows clean with the rest of the menu. The lists have also been switched from their default positions. Instead of the devices in your profile being on the left, they are now on the right, matching today’s standards.

Finally, if you choose to go to the profiles menu, you will be greeted with a completely new menu.

If you choose to create a new profile, you will be granted with the “Enter Text” prompt.

Or if you choose to delete a profile, you will be asked with this prompt. This also applies to any “pop-up” notices or confirmation boxes.

That’s about it for this update. Sorry it took so long since the last one, but this hopefully made up for it. This update might also be the very last one until release. While there are no pictures of the BSP to show right now, there is very little left to do on Snaf’s part, leaving all that’s left to do is to get it textured and in-game. There might be little, minor updates giving you progress on the level design in the future, but expect the next major announcement to be a release date.

I have one thing to say: make sure you put in something for "time of day" so coldsnap players don't get an exception when pausing. (unless the maps have their own independant pause menus and styles.) Also, great job fixing the scroll bugs. I suppose it won't be too bad seeing "scroll up" and "scroll down" in some menus.

edit: isn't that Danger Canyon in the background of the first screen? I thought this was the Delta Halo ui.

Amen to that. Anyway I think pooky summed it up in this first post. With the combination of the Delta UI and CMT SPV2, this will truely define what Halo Custom Edition really is.

It's a modified version of Death Island that we're using as a placeholder until the Delta Halo bsp is finished.

L33T's Alpha Halo UI looked pretty good, and Halo has a ton of music to complement its theme... is that one going to get spiced up, overlayed with the GUI, and released?

I have a single song that could be used for the UI. IMO it brings out the Halo feel VERY well. Its called EdgenHalo. Perhaps some of you have heard it? It really suits something like a tour of grand forerunner structures. Much like the Delta Lake. :)

I hate the song, but I like the version ingame Halo 2: no lyrics, just awesome instrumentals.
I don't think it's a matter of not being suited to taste, but not being suited to the map's theme.

When this is released, I'm going to try to get someone who can to port it over to Mac & PC, with permission, of course. I know the technique, but it just doesn't work for me. It's not the PC technique, it's a new technique that doesn't produce lighting errors when it's run through HHK (mac modding app), which is a good thing. It also can only be done on the Mac :/

Would anyone really port a box map? Common sense says someone would choose a much cooler map than a box map. There are so many to choose from. Regardless, the problem solves itself.

The main reason i think it hasnt been released is because the biggest benefit of halo CE are the custom maps.
now considering CE is allready struggling for players wat do u think would happen if the the best Part of CE became available on PC.
it'd be another crushing blow to the CE player base.

the "scrool up/down" buttons a really an eyesore, why not just use the arrows.

the renders of the mc, even with how nice they look, dont fit the theme of the ui at all, the rest of the images are that white outlin-ish type, and these just feel out of place.

the hit enter to continue button is nothing but a waste of time, and i sincerely hope you either dont include it, or make a varient without it.

alot of text, for mapnames, profile names and such are squisshed and jaggy looking, and get worse at higher resolutions it seems.

just to load the ui takes a good amount of time, and that is never a good thing.

you guys did a great job otherwise, lots of work went into it, and in most places, it shows.

i could be wrong, but it looks to me like you made a button (image) that has the arrow plus scrol up/down.....

why not have an image with just the arrow and have the rest of the image transparent.

as for the dont cry about it and blame bungie comment, way to look like profesionals.

Agreed, I could care less about the loading time, it takes some time for me to load Halo CE any ways, so it will not matter that much to me if the loading time is tiny bit longer, I use to have to wait a hour and a half for Halo CE to load, back when I was playing off of my laptop, so the loading time is ok if it is long.

Whats the usual timeline for beta2 to release? (not asking for a commited date, just a ball park)

On a side note, releasing the modified tool to allow for PC rebuilding of CE maps would be a really really really really really realy BAAAAD idea (Really!)
Wont help whats left of the CE community, and won't inspire any new PC modders to bridge the divide either.

while I do enjoy do enjoy watching people flame eachother, I would like to interject with a point and a question. if you like the game then why the hell do you care about how long it takes to load? if you know it will take a long time but look awesome, then go and make a bag of popcorn to aid your enjoyment of the awesome or get rid of some of your maps.

i never usually let my maps folder get over a GB big. it had gotten over 1.2 GB so i went a pruned all the maps i don't like any more or don't play at all, and ended up killing about a 700MB!!

halo now boots about 25 seconds faster.

I'm also finding it hard to press enter when I start up halo CE with our UI, it's such a nuisance! I cannot believe that you would even consider making me spend half a second to get past that menu to get to gain access to the main menu! I don't care if it's there so you can admire the bsp! Leave it in, I would much rather have an option, of admiring the map without all the huge text and etc in the road. It takes literally milliseconds to get rid of, at any point, and does so with a cool blur effect. Then you get to buisness when you want!

Don't like it, quit complaining, cuz I'm pretty sure despite your complaining, its going into the UI. Either, download it, or not, it's up to you.

The whole "enter" thing makes it feel more like a console game (except Halo Xbox, of course) because almost all of them start the same way: developer/designer logos, possible opening sequence(s), and then a "press start" screen. Tried that out, but it stuffed the back button up. It didn't go back to the main menu. We can tell the enter/left mouse to return to the main menu when the back button is hit, but escape would do nothing (because there is no event type linked to it).

It's actaully not that bad, without the maps. It's actually not possible to do that thing with the maps in the ui. The ui will probably tell the game to display certain information for the map you have highlighted. If any maps it tries to display don't exist in your maps folder, the game could get an exception or "error: Halo couldn't load because [this map file] doesn't exist in your maps folder. Correct the problem and try loading Halo again.)

don't do it for every map. do it for some. did the origional halo do it for all? no. so this one doesn't need to eather.

however, that does not mean that you shouldn't put any custom maps on that list.

I've been doing well with the beta I have, but I'm hoping you fixed some glitches like not being able to set the name and password when hosting your own server?
We were too hopeful with the latest HEK+ release. It protected everything fine, but you can't get to any of the "enter text" menus. The final release will only have .bitmaps protected, so everything should be fine.

Understandable, but it doesn't make sense that in that time you modeled 1/3 of the Modern Combat arsenal. :-?

yeah, I agree. I have alot of work to do on alot of shit myself, but I like to divide my time up evenly. If I focussed on 1 project for too long, I'd get bored of it, forget about the others, get yelled at by people because of that.

The project is more dead than alive. Jcap was been poking people to get a new BSP. Some progress was made, but then it died off a few months ago, again. D:

i sent jcap the bsp more than 2 months ago. it's up to him to get someone to texture the thing. i was more than willing to finish the last detail while the rest got textured, but i never heard anything more about it.
