View Full Version : [HL2] I think I'm losing my marbles

Ok, so I recently finished Half-Life 2, and started playing Episode 1. Somewhere along the line, my whole outlook on the game's characters changed. It all started at Episode 1's beginning, when Dog digs you out of the rubble and Alyx is clearly overjoyed to see you alive. I genuinely felt happy to see her again as well, which feels kind of weird to me while in a game. As I continue romping around with her, I'm increasingly aware of the fact that I thoroughly enjoy her company, so much so I think there's some kind of crazy emotional bond to the character. I'll gladly go first into the dark and spooky hallway, I constantly look behind me to make sure she's still present, I can't get enough of her talking constantly, and I try to go through solo sequences as fast as possible so I can meet up again quicker.

HAS BOTOLF LOST HIS HANDLE ON REALITY?!?!?!

Soul be damned, this sounds like a good deal.

Sever
March 12th, 2008, 05:12 PM
You do have Episode 2, right? Because it is wholeheartedly worth your soul. As enraptured as you are with e1's Alyx, e2 has a good chance of initially destroying you, then bringing you back to life, then destroying you again at the end. Overall, however, it is quite worth the price of ones soul.

They're just keeping up the NPC love they started in Half-Life 1. Basically, people would really care for the NPCs that were on their team and freak out if one of them died. It's what happens sometime when you use them to progress the story instead of cut scenes and such. It all boils down to their lives equaling the plot. If they die, it's just a shoot'em up. If they live, it all of a sudden becomes a story.

edit: woops, hit post too soon

While I didn't care enough of HL1 to even finish the game because I didn't find it fun, I did enjoy the method the storytelling. Halo 1 was pretty good at it inadvertently. Things like marine out of combat dialog, crewman yelling, and the "talking" covenant actually made you feel as if you were walking through the universe as it was unfolding. Halo 2 had a whole lot more dialog, but I cant recall a moment where I found myself listening to something that wasn't a response. Not sure about Halo 3; I've only played through it once. Half Life 2 kept it up after HL1 with things like people talking to themselves in the train station and such. Cant say the episodes did it as well because for the most part there's a lack of non-combat dialog that takes place outside of a "cutscene".

Go download the porn mod and keep the fapping off mah forums D=.

Valve stated that the goal for Episode 1 was to get the player to be more involved with NPCs and in particular Alyx. I didn't really feel much of an attraction to her as a fellow human being but it was nice to have an invincible ally running around with you through ep 1 and part of ep 2. covering you with sniper fire. The levels with the sniper were some of the best only after the strider levels in the original game imo.

HL2 just bores me, Ive tried to complete it twice, and each time I start playing it, and think, man this seripusly blows and I go do some thing else, it seems too tasking, like I HAVE to complete it just to satisfy apart of me that even when I do, wont be fully satisfied, its annoying. If I had Halo 2 on the PC (not vista) I'd play that any day over HL2, I bet.

Someday I will complete HL2, I want to because I have EP1 and EP2, I want to see what everyone is banging on about.

HL2 is more subtle, you talk to people, you listen to what everyones saying even if your not involved in the conversation, hell u even read wall boards that contain old newspapers.

if you dont, you just end up running from one spot to another hurling shit around with a gravity gun and having no idea why your where you are.

There is not way you can hurt a hunter as humanly possible, because hunters are stronger than any human (HEV suit enhanced humans don't count), you'll hurt you're self more than the hunter.

Highway 17, quite possibly the worst road-trip ever. The driving sections in Episode 2 were infinitely better.

+ Many places to hop out and reduce long stretches of boring driving, including the awesome fights with the Hunters
+ Alyx rides along the entire time

Highway 17, quite possibly the worst road-trip ever. The driving sections in Episode 2 were infinitely better.

+ Controls seemed more refined
+ Many places to hop out and reduce long stretches of boring driving, including the awesome fights with the Hunters
+ Alyx rides along the entire time
+ Excellent scenery

The "Alyx Appreciation Thread" does not wish to die, mistar. The freeway near my house is called Highway 17 :v

Anyways, I think sane people are allowed to feel for Alyx but they should check for their marbles if they don't wonder about Gordon. He speaks even less than Link does.

The thing is, YOU are Gordon. Just like Link, you're supposed to fill in the blanks yourself, with your own emotions and thoughts. The difference between the two is that you're detached from Link moreso than you are Gordon.

That's the best part: You see everything through Gordon's eyes, the "cutscenes" you actually partake in.

I never played Half-Life 2, and after seeing how people have gone crazy because of a woman in it, I don't think I ever will. I'll stick to Cortana, thank you very much.

Back from a week-long "vacation", I see this thread is still going.

i think this thread has served it's point muchaso.
might be time to lock it ey?
Nay, if people still find some enjoyment/use of the thread by talking about the character or games, let 'em, no need to swoop in and stifle interesting conversation.

Ah yes, Cortana. Sadly, I can never look at her the same now, she's merely a hollow shell to me.

She's just a hollow shell to me as well, a video game character. I was merely kidding when I said I was going to stick to her.

These holographic jokes are wearing thin!

I recently realized I had no idea how to kill a Hunter with its own flechettes, I was trying to grab them with the gravity gun instead of just using rubble to collect them :p

I'm not stupid. I know what the achievement is, just I wanted to be challenged before someone went and said how to do it easier. And I haven't read anywhere that it tells you how do to it. They mostly only outline the function of the achievement. You actually have to search for a website that expands and gives hints on what to do. Since I doubt most people would come upon that without specifically searching for it. So I consider it a spoiler. No big deal though. It's just one achievement after all.

I actually stumbled across the solution online, and wasn't looking for it specifically, so I'd say it's far easier to find than you think :p

I would have never thought about the right way to do it if I hadn't read it. The best way seemed to have a hunter shoot them at the ground near him and then try and have it chase you.

And it's a spoiler about an enemy that you see in episode 1. If that's too much, then you need to l2internet.

Episode One spoilers omg look awayz

If you're talking about the parking garage with all the antlion holes that have to be blocked with wrecked cars, there's a gate you have to crank open with one of those stationary orange-wheel thingies. It's on the top level, nearby the other gate where a wrecked car was hidden.

MNC
March 31st, 2008, 12:04 PM
But you really need all the gates covered or the antlions will ruin your chance of opening the gate. Happened to me. Or I was just low on health.
