So uh what kind of career path have you got in mind? :raise:

Love your photos. :3
Civil Engineering, thanks for asking :-D. I can't honestly see this becoming a career path for me, as it seems that there's a lot of photographers out there, most of which aren't earning much money. I enjoy it, sure, but I think I'd be happier doing something I'd also enjoy but with a more stable income.

If you're wondering why none of this is new - it's because i've been really bogged down with school, so my camera has really just been collecting dust over these past couple of months. :(

Sunny - go Canon and get a f/1.2 lens instead:

Timo, is it you who has the 400D (Since there are a few photographers on this site) ? If so, would you recommend it?

I'm looking to get a DSLR camera with a decent lens. Also, is the stock lens any good?

I'm just hoping the price will go down november-time =D

It's all good, I'm not really a fan of auto focus anyhow, I mainly do manual on the stock. I hope to find it cheap, I have a buddy who found his for about a 100. It works great.

Definitely would recommend it - it was a great investment. This Site (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/)is an excellent source of canon lens and equipment reviews, when it comes to choosing the lens you want to get. The stock lenses are OK at best, the twin lens kit I got was alright when I started out; until I realized that the lenses cost less that half of equivalent lenses and they're not as sharp (manual focusing is literally impossible with the 18-55mm). But they are cheap, and a good idea if you're not wanting to fork out $700+ (NZD, not sure what prices you'd get) for a new lens.

If you are looking for a comparison between different D-SLR cameras, D-Preview (http://www.dpreview.com/) is a great resource.

Note that Canon doesn't allow you to clean the sensor inside the camera yourself, but Nikon and other brands allow you to use Eclipse Swabs. This saves you time, and you can get 10 swabs+cleaning fluid for around about the same price as it would cost you to send it off to Canon. In the long run you'll eventually have a bit of dust ending up on the sensor, no matter how careful you are.

SuperSunny
May 13th, 2008, 02:56 PM
Doesn't the 400D have the auto sensor cleaner?

Timo
May 13th, 2008, 03:37 PM
Yeah it does - but for me it seems i've got some hard bits of dust that just don't want to move. You can give the camera a baseline for the dust by taking a photo of a white image too; so when you take pictures it automatically gets rid of the dust. But i'd rather get rid of the dust sitting on the sensor apposed to just going around it.

Looking on Amazon.com for an american price, it's ~$1055 for the camera body (Canon 400D) and lens I most commonly use (100mm f/2.8 macro). Finding that makes me want to move to America just so I can get a reasonable price for gear, prices in NZ are ridiculous.

Long exposure. Same thing that gives the effect of red/white light streaks when a car goes by at night.
I got a 4-stop ND filter so I can expose for longer (take that timo :downs:), and I've been planning to take photos at ma local waterfall. The last one is the best, timo. Nice job.

You don't need a fancy camera to take shots like that, simply a tripod and the ability to control your shutter speed. All cameras have been HD for YEARS - Seeing as HD is anything higher than 720p, lulz.

Gisborne city is surrounded by hills, and when a big boom goes off from a firework (or dry ice bomb ;D), the boom echoes around the hills for around 15 seconds. It's epic.

Conservation

Although the weta had native predators in the form of birds, especially the weka and kiwi, reptiles and bats before the arrival of humans, introduced species such as cats, hedgehogs, rats (including kiore) and mustelids have caused a sharp increase in the rate of predation. They are also vulnerable to habitat destruction caused by humans and modification of their habitat caused by introduced browsers. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation considers that 16 of the 70 species of weta are now at risk. Programmes to prevent extinctions have been implemented since the 1970s.

That's the only thing I could find. I'd love to see one of these insects.

These are two shots on two different days of my sister's flat's deck in Wellington, the second biggest city in NZ. What I found weird is that these were two days apart - and the moon has shifted hugely to the right o_. (the building in the bottom center of the first is in the bottom left of the second).

Hopefully when I go back down there this weekend I can get up early enough for the sunrise, and go to this lookout point over the city:

Hey con, victoria is awesome too!

You should grab a cheap lens, like the Canon 50mm f/1.8 http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8-Camera-Lens/dp/B00007E7JU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1240004693&sr=8-1, go raeging and take some pictures! You'd be surprised with what you can take - point it at the sky/horizon and leave it going for half an hour at night to catch the stars, or something. If it doesn't have a CF card they're ridiculously cheap now too.

Syuusuke

After crossing the strait inbetween the north and south island. Biggest downside of taking photos off of a boat is that my camera's lenses are dotted with salty water, and I can't find my micro fiber cloth to clean them off :F

Train!

The scenery reminded me why I loved living here - spend most of the time out in an open viewing carriage. As you can image there was no time to compose a shot as the train was going ~100km/h the entire time, so these were taken inbetween trees a few metres away, etc.

Until then, you can try doing handheld panoramas
(http://www.brewzone.com/2007/10/handheld-panoramas/2) or you could make yourself a $1 tripod

Here's the unresized version ~16000x2300:

But I think I might fiddle with the raw (both panos are just what the camera shat out) a bit later on to see if I can make it a bit nicer.

Looks cool, but the black and white shots seem underexposed/low contrast. In my opinion, the whole point of graffiti is the bright colors, and photographing it in black and white just doesn't really do it justice.

One day away from completing a trip around East Cape
http://www.nzstays.co.nz/pics/East%20Cape%20Map.jpg
Gisborne to Opotiki, up and around the coast. I got a 10 stop ND filter the other day too which i've used pretty heavily over the trip - it lets in 1000x less light than normal ;o. Went back to the old freezing works I posted up in here at the start of last year, been to the lighthouse at the very tip of east cape, walked up a stream all the way to an amazing waterfall. A 10 year old Dairy building too, that had been tagged up and smashed to bits. When I get back home i'll post process some of these photos, and upload them (using a laptop with canon's raw software, it's pretty terrible).

e: In the mean time here's an unedited 100% crop of something I found while walking the stream:

~Big post~

It's a moth believe it or not, happened upon it after nearly hitting my head on a dead branch after taking some macro shots. Looked at the end of the branch again and saw it. I just can't believe it's hair/feathers, they almost looked plastic (see a full pic further down).
The wallpaper i've been using, shot of a shrub covered in some afternoon rain outside my dad's house:
http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/Jan-eastcape/_MG_0686.jpg
I've spent the past couple of hours trawling over the photos, and have picked out around 36 great ones. I've also got about twelve panoramas to process in autopano pro, which is what i'll do tomorrow. In the order of taking them.

There's also a big panorama take from the other side of the wharf that i'll look into tomorrow.

The following were taken at the old freezing works at Tokomaru Bay, where i've taken photos earlier this year.

Secluded waterfall that was just barely visible from the road. Had to jump a fence and walk through a paddock of cows to get this shot. It seemed to turn into a steep stream pretty fast though, so I decided not to get any closer. 45 sec at f/11

http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/Jan-eastcape/_MG_0941.jpg
A photo of the rocky beach at Lottin Point. I've taken a couple of big panoramas here too, with the 10 stop ND filter on to give it the same misty water effect. Hopefully they've come out alright! 46 sec at f/11

http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/Jan-eastcape/_MG_0993.jpg
This waterfall was well up a stream off the main road at Whanarua Bay. Surprisingly it wasn't sign posted, just happened to pass a lady on the way down to the beach who said there was a waterfall upstream. It was an epic walk, visual overload with saturated green colours. On my monitor, the colour is as lush and green as it was on the day. 30 sec at f/13
http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/Jan-eastcape/_MG_1003.jpg
Another perspective on the waterfall. I wanted to get closer but there was quite a lot of spray coming up from the fall, and I didn't want to get my camera sprayed. 48 sec at f/7.1

http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/Jan-eastcape/_MG_1033.jpg
Thought i'd take my macro lens for a whizz in here to see what I could find. 0.8 sec at f/7.1

http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/Jan-eastcape/_MG_1118-Edit.jpg
2.5 sec at f/10

These are some photos taken in a reserve in Opotoki. There's a 2000 year old Puriri tree here that Maori used to bury elders/sacrifice people in that i've taken a massive panorama of. Hopefully good results :] There was pretty bad lighting though so i've only got a few macro shots.

Some orange fungus that almost looked luminous against the black log they were residing on.

These final shots were taken up the Tauranga River in Waioeka Gorge on the way back home. These a three hour trail that follows the river up and back. Initially we were just going to look at the river mouth but ended up doing the entire walk. There was a stream that fed the river that had a really epic look to it:
http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/Jan-eastcape/_MG_1280.jpg

I decided to trek a bit further up the stream, at it just stayed as epic as that:

This was taken up by the lighthouse. There was no clear 360 degree view from the top, except off the top of this station. The panorama I was trying to get out of it sucked too. I forgot to shoot in manual mode, accidentally left it in aperture priority so when I moved around the camera decided to expose for the sky, then ground, etc. :ugh:

Drove about an hour out of Christchurch today with my brother to see Sharplin Falls. We initially started on the track but decided to walk up the river instead, which was worth it:

http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/sharplinfalls/9.jpg

The last shot there is Sharplin Falls, which is a bizarre. It falls into a pond not much larger than you can see in the photo, and the water just disappears. It must feed directly into an aquifer, it just doesn't make sense in my mind that a waterfall on the other side of the boulder flows down the river, yet this one drops directly into the ground. :ugh:

Yeah I agree - it was definitely worth the trip up the river :]

Got out to Peel Forest today, got to a Rata, Emily and Ackland Falls. Found a couple of neat spots too downstream from Emily falls, although it was a bit of a bitch to get there. Had to backtrack to another stream and follow it down till it linked up with the river that feeds Emily.

Emily Falls:

Well by switching my monitor cables over so I could plug my xbox into my new monitor, I managed to lose my colour profiles for both monitors (In my frustration I edited the RGB settings on my old monitor, killing any chance I had in recovering the original colours). I just upgraded to lightroom 3 as well, which magically removed my lightroom 3 beta catalogue, which means i've lost all my alterations to every photo i've taken in the past 6 months. Great.

BUT: http://timo.modacity.net/pix/wallpapers enjoy.

There's a photo competition on at the moment with a local camera store, and first prize is an Olympus EP-1 (I think I might cry if I win it). The theme is night, which is why I took those photos - thinking more and more about entering the power pole one. Figure i'm in with a fighting chance with something unique like that, most of the current entries are either light painting or just time lapse shots of roads.

A lovely picture, if you're going to edit it I would suggest taking control of the lovely natural contrast this image creates between orange and black-purple-blue and enhance the brightness of the glowing line in the bottom right hand corner. The cloud of stars in the middle serve as a natural hook to drag the eye from left to right but all you meet is a somewhat glowing horizon, make it more magnificent.

Amazing pictures Timo. My parents went on a trip to NZ and they went on the same boat trip to Milford Sounds, they saw the dolphins following the boat. Small world Timo hah.

They also went to Lake Tekapo, in case you know where that is.

I would try, but I suck at converting things to B&W and trying to keep it looking great.

Thanks man. Basically if you come to NZ to see the sights, you go to Milford Sound and go on the ferry, so i'm not that surprised :p. We were intending to drive past Lake Tekapo on the way down to Queenstown, but we missed the turnoff and ended up driving down some country road passed a few dams instead :C

I see you have another version that has more stuff on the left (http://timo.modacity.net/pix/2010/milford/r2/Queenstown.jpg), but the height is less. I'm trying to get something that is like 4480x1080, or larger if possible. :)

jcap
April 28th, 2011, 12:06 PM
How does the top one have a height of 1080, then? Is it just stretched, or was the 1000px high one just scaled down a little?

Timo
April 28th, 2011, 11:11 PM
They've both been scaled down, the original height will be around 2400 pixels. Once I have time i'll recompile the panorama and try and get a 4480x1080 that still looks decent.
