Hey everyone,

As you can see, the Source SDK discussion area is... to say the least, barren. There are many of us (including myself) that are interested in getting into Hammer and making maps, but we lack the knowledge.

That's where our other members come in.

If you're good at that sort of thing, I heavily encourage you to write up brief yet effective tutorial for anything SDK-related!

We currently need tutorials on... well, just about everything. Basics of Hammer, making walls, buildings, etc.

Come on and show us how smart you are! :awesome:

Go check out the valve dev community wiki, or just youtube up some hammer tutorials.
You'll find heaps. :)

I'll see if I can make a basic hammer tutorial on Friday. The editor environment is really simple to be honest, but it does help to have some kind of guide to get started I guess. FPSBanana and Valve's developer wiki have 2 trillion tutorials on basic hammer use but a lot of them give new users bad habits (I can't stress this enough, NEVER USE THE CARVE TOOL! GRRRRR!).

am i the only one that thinks hammer looks really simple? And that everything is boxes makes it even more simple..This is 3ds max for 4 years ago all over again(Yes i tried to build a map of 10000 boxes lmao)

you could do the same in halo i believe..Not the exact same way...But Helix Canyon for example is alot of objects that is placed out in Max(The pillars is for example going through the ground, the middle structure is going through the cliffs)Doubt its very stable, helix canyon was p glitchy..

Hammer can make damn fine maps, you just need to know how to use the editor. Everyone here is used to 3ds - that's why few people have released any maps that are anything less than boxy.

The only problem with the editor is that it's dated - I think that Valve has included some plugins with the Left4Dead version of the editing kit that allows you to make maps using Google SketchUp. I haven't tried making a map with that, but it appears to work.
