Yeah, it's in my gallery thread; but as this is my major project at the moment and probably my best model to date, it's getting its own thread so you poor bastards don't have to wait for everything else to load on the other one whenever I post updates.

Currently lingering somewhere in the 15-17,000 triangle range.

On the to-do list:

Add more detail to driver and idler wheels, redoing them
Redo lifting loops on the top of the turret to make them smoother
Possibly redo the side skirts
Mudflaps
Interior
General tweaking where it's neededNot sure how I'm doing for scale, but the scale drawings I had seemed to vary a little so I aimed somewhere between the two. Glacis plate angle is accurate to within 3 degrees.

I know you live down in a basement and your eyes might have adapted to the darkness, but ours don't. Pictures are a tad to dark. :v:

But looks really good from what I can see :awesome:

i must admit i am a wasteful person

I dunno if I can be bothered redoing all the wheels. I might, but I really don't know.

Blame Reaper for trying to teach me to make everything one continuous mesh because he thought that was what the 'professionals' did.

idiot, just delete the face and then go into border selection, and cap

rossmum
April 27th, 2008, 12:30 PM
I don't like the cap tool anymore, it never caps what I want it to

e:

remind me to try it tomorrow, I was probably doing it wrong before

Silly rossmum. Doing it wrong.

But, nice giant metal cat.

Alright WoL, tried what you said, and it buggered the smoothing up with the raised part of the wheel (not the rim). Same smoothing group, same object... anyway, unless there's a way around it, it looks like the wheels will stay as they are (except the drivers and idlers, which need serious detailing).

get it the fuck out of that basket. Your (what appears to be, judging by the lack of wires) improved skill makes me curious to see what else you can accomplish. I have an M44 if you want some good ref images >_>

rossmum
August 17th, 2008, 10:53 PM
The pic lies.

Receiver is giving me no end of headaches and the stock isn't being very cooperative either, plus I've still got the sight globe hole to do and that's going to be a pain to get right.

Wires can come later because rendering this thing takes forever :downs:

rossmum
August 18th, 2008, 05:57 PM
Right, wires, and I am going to have to be vicious as hell with LODs given stock RO tanks are 5-8K each (that said, the balance police will likely murder anyone who puts more than 2-4 of these in a map):

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm258/rossmumv2/kingwire.jpg

Once it gets further than about fifty feet from the player I'll probably cut the minor stuff like bolts, bordering on mudflaps, rough up the tow cables a little, etc.

e: Just realised I can polychop the shit out of a lot of parts now without losing detail, will do ASAP. As for the messy wires, no idea what their game is, but I know I have some minor nonplanars in places

TeeKup

So is that tank going ingame?

rossmum
August 18th, 2008, 09:43 PM
hopefully

rossmum
August 27th, 2008, 10:52 AM
Fixed hull MG34 mount, loader's periscope, towing hooks, indentation in glacis plate for radioman/hull gunner's periscope, etc. Minor fixes, basically. Still need to redo driver wheels, add some details to the engine deck and tracks, and then redo the side skirts. Gun mantlet and possibly barrel could use some more rounding, too.

Render coming sometime this century

rossmum
August 30th, 2008, 12:31 AM
Circuit breaker tripped and I lost the render, have a quick and nasty:

rossmum
October 9th, 2008, 10:36 PM
Shit was wrong so I fixed it - drive sprockets, gun mantlet (actually think it may be a bit too lopsided now), cupola and periscopes, and hinges on the loader's hatch. Also rescaled the road wheels to their proper size.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm258/rossmumv2/kingtiger6.jpg
http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm258/rossmumv2/kingtiger5.jpg

Still a fair way to go, as I realise things are off and go back and tweak or redo them

Those wheels look like they eat up a lot of polys, are you sure at least some of it can't be textured on?

legionaire45
October 9th, 2008, 11:44 PM
Well, he could probably get away with normal mapping it on when he wants to get it in game (assuming he puts it into Source). He'll need the high poly for that anyway.

I don't know if RO supports normal maps, but if it does he could do this for that too.

rossmum
October 10th, 2008, 01:16 AM
It doesn't, unfortunately.

I think I'll just deal with the wheels through LODing. When you're right next to the tank, they're modelled. When you're in it with your head out the hatch, or when you're more than a few tens of yards from it, the textures take over.

nick3d
October 10th, 2008, 09:40 AM
Whats the tricount for that???

rossmum
October 10th, 2008, 07:14 PM
Something slightly over 30k, I haven't optimised it properly yet

PopeAK49
October 10th, 2008, 07:39 PM
Very nice tank. But i do agree that the wheels look like a whole bunch of wasted polys.

rossmum
October 10th, 2008, 09:18 PM
The problem is that thanks to the King Tiger's size, a simple skin won't cover it. If RO supported normals, I'd use those; however it doesn't and as those wheels are actually quite massive, flat cylinders are going to look like absolute shit to anyone standing near the tank.
