So i have a school project coming up. Self portrait, has to have some meaningful shit in it, so i thought, hay, i can do dis shiet easy.

I started off by making a picture in photoshop as a compilation of photos, heres what i got.

So, yea, i look like a stripper, but when i add the full arm tattoo it will be less obvious.

http://img212.imageshack.us/img212/2012/img0606rw9.jpg

I took a posterboard then and sketched out the image onto it, and then with acrylics inked out the main colors. I re-sketched the image on top of it to check my boundaries, and it appears i have to re-mask some areas around the hand and face. Next im going to bring out charcoal black and white to get general shadows and highlights, and then im going to finish it off with colored pencils. same technique i used to make this, for example:

Never knew colored pencils worked well on acrylic.

Pencils work better on acrylic than paper, in my opinion. I just like the grip that pencils get on it.

What brand of acrylics do you use? I guess that could have something to do with it.

Damn, I wish I had some artistic talent.
Full arm tattoo? ,':O So am I to assume you've been given artistic license? If that's the case, you should definitely give yourself a mohawk.

...Actually, I was kidding at first, but come to think of it... and it would go well with the tattoo...

I prefer gauche paints, but acrylics dry nice and fast and are easy to color correct. Needs more progress posted.

Moar progress, as i had time. The acrylic didn't work with the charcoal pencils, and only waxy crayons really did anything--since that didn't suit my needs, i decided to redo it. I bought some watercolor paper as i knew that charcoal pencils would work on those, and i cut out the shapes of the colors i needed. I used adhesive spray to stick them together and on a black background. From there i just started shading and stuff.

That was last night, here's tonight, a little more than halfway done finishing:

http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/9140/img0704lv0.jpg

Obviously, i have to touch up the head, finish the background (im axxing the guitar, too distracting, going to do something else instead) finish the arm, finish the tie, and voila, im done. The hardest work is mostly over, the detail on the face will be the most challenging thing left--which is mostly already finished.

I despise colored pens, pencils and paints with a passion. Pure pencil + digital coloring ftw.

EDIT: Damn you Dane for negrepping me for my preference of art mediums

Meh, i grew up on traditional art. You can't get texture from a printer, you cant get (good) smells from a printer, and usually, you cant get the same colors from a printer. There's no undo key in traditional art, which to me makes it so much more enjoyable--each piece is like a puzzle, that must be worked through. Or like...a journey, you don't know how you're gonna get there exactly, but you know you're gonna get there somehow. Meh, maybe im just too hippy with it.

^^ That was beautiful *wipes tear from my eye*

:D

TBH it would have been neater if you were to paint a legit wireframe on your guy there. (By legit I mean... a common one designed for good deformation (http://www.faiman.com/torso_wireframe.jpg)) Also, what are you actually doing to your chest there? Pushing the tie over? because the collar of the shirt looks so tight against your neck on the naked side that it looks weird.

if you've ever seen the piece 'Portrait of a young man' you'd understand. This is a spinoff of that.

I'm done (but only because i had to turn it in) It's decent enough, but i know i could have done better.

I'm kinda happy with it, but really not, because it could be better with a bit more time.

But real men hide their nipples when it has to be 'school appropriate' so the freshmen girls dont get all hot and wet looking at a 'real man'.

Don't insult me, i know how to mount projects. It's a waste of time though, she grades it just the same, so i never bother. We only prep the pictures if they're going into a gallery.

Pretty sure art is what matters Zephy boyo. If people are snooty enough to not respect work just because it's not in a pretty frame or painted on gold leaf they need to an hero, or go have a look at my all time fav artwork, Pisschrist (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piss_Christ) by Andres Serrano.
