Italian scientists Resign Over L'Aquila Quake Verdicts

(CNN) -- Earthquake experts worldwide expressed shock at the manslaughter convictions of six Italian scientists who failed to predict the deadly L'Aquila quake, warning that the decision could severely harm future research.

Two scientists resigned their posts with the government's disaster preparedness agency Tuesday after a court in L'Aquila sentenced six scientists and a government official to six years in prison. The court ruled Monday that the scientists failed to accurately communicate the risk of the 2009 quake, which killed more than 300 people.

Luciano Maiani, the physicist who led the National Commission for the Prediction and Prevention of Major Risks, resigned in protest of the verdict Tuesday afternoon, Italy's Civil Protection Agency announced.

"The situation created by the sentencing yesterday on the facts from L'Aquila is incompatible with a clear and effective performance of the functions of the commission and its role as a consulting bodies for the state," Maiani said in a statement released by the agency.

In addition, Mauro Dolce quit as director of the office that monitors volcano and earthquake threats, the agency said. Dolce will be given another post, it said.

In the week before the earthquake struck, the group told the public that the high incidence of smaller earthquakes were not necessarily precursors of a larger quake. They did, however, also mention that earthquakes were unpredictable, and that building codes in the area needed to be adjusted to provide better seismic safety.

They should arrest the government for not having proper building standards in place, unreinforced masonry in seismic area whatever the risk is downright dangerous. The buildings killed these people, not the seismologists that told them not to evacuate.

As for "Scientists being tried for science," Timo hit it on the head. Whoever was commissioned to regulate and construct those buildings should be tried for negligence, not the physicists heading a commission that attempts in predicting barely predictable circumstances. The hate for what happened is easily understandable, but you're shooting the custodian for not stopping a robbery.

Trialling someone for the former is not only stupid, it's fucking disgusting.

We've been waiting 20yr's for the big earthquake to hit LA, because we know it'll occur eventually, does that mean that when it does happen we should blame the guys who monitor it, or the guys that didn't construct buildings to high enough standards in cost cutting exercise's to justice for the death of the people.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind these guys told people it was a seismic zone, so how the hell can they be blamed.
