In reality, Freeman's just a science geek with a crowbar who just happens to be lucky enough to have a grav gun, despite the fact that if one of Freemans enemies in the Half Life universe had the gun, and not him, he'd have been dead a long time ago. It's a cool plot though, it does make him that out of the ordinary hero, but he's just that, a lucky hero with a nice piece of equipment.

He hasn't got standout holy shit skill. Everytime anyone ever mentions freeman they're like, "LOL HE'LL OWN JOO WITH HIS GRAV GUN LULZ" I never EVER here people say he'd win with just his skill alone.

If we were talking realistically, the Master Chief is an obvious winner. The guy was raised as a soldier, and enhanced with various drugs and implements, like that bone-reinforcing mesh and a CNS implant, as well as a fusion-powered armor system with recharging energy shielding. He's skilled with any and all weaponry and vehicles, and can easily pick up on how to work something, be it human or alien.

Gordon Freeman is a scientist with a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics with a high-tech hazmat suit that relies on battery power. He has a basic understanding of pistols, submachineguns, the SPAS-12, handheld explosives, and an RPG launcher, as well as some Black Mesa prototypes like a charge beam, gluon gun, and a zero-point energy manipulator.

The only thing those two have in common is good luck, though the Chief's luck is much more epic than Gordon's; the Chief has blown up a whole ringworld twice, did an orbital drop using nothing more than a large hunk of metal, and jumped onto an alien battlecruiser from a space station while holding a large bomb, while proceeding to detonate said bomb at the ship's core, and living through all of it. And all the time while doing this, he's taking out whole squads and armies of Covenant and Flood.

Gordon? Leveled City 17 by overloading its core power source and NARROWLY escaped by train, after being lucky enough to get his suit and gravity gun powered up by the Combine's confiscation fields. Twice. While solving physics and button puzzles and killing zombies.

So yeah, realistically, the Chief would win. HOWEVER, if you were to compare numbers and look at the games' health counts and weapons damage, they'd be evenly matched.

Actually, the Spartan-IIs had a very developed mind as well as a body. Due to the augmentations, they can think, plan and discover the solution to something many times faster than a normal human, and yes, that includes Freeman.
