View Full Version : Modacity Dedicated Server?

TheGhost

If Modacity were to put up a dedicated server, which game(s) would you want it to be for? I'm looking to compile a list of favs from here that we could vote on in the future. Note that ideally these would be games with available LINUX servers.

TF2/CSS, mainly because I have those two games and havent played in a while, having dedicated server would mean I'd play them more.

It's really L4D or TF2. CS:S has like 20 thousand servers, and halo ce has the same ammount of empty servers. http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c251/CN3089/Emoticons/emot-colbert.gif

If Epic ever gets to releasing binaries for UT3 on Linux, that would be awesome.

May I also point out that Prey now runs natively on Linux (http://icculus.org/prey/).

Also, I'd LOVE to see Doom/Quake multiplayer. And since Doom is open-source and has many version with multilayer for Linux, it is feasible as well.

They also have Mac and Linux clients available... albeit the lawyers have been blocking it for the last several months.

Not Photoshops, those were from Ryan Gordon -- the (single) dude responsible for the Linux Dedicated Server, Linux Client, and OSX Client.

So yeah, he's done, just needs the lawyers to get over it. (And has for months and months now)

nVidia said it's not PhysX... Ryan said it's not Microsoft... so we assume GameSpy.

Damn I feel stupid:rolleyes:, that's right they DID release the server side, I was thinking client!

But yes, I'd add UT3. A lot of great mods and potential for the engine. It'd be a great shame to waste all of that programming potential.. ;)

In fact I'm working on one myself (when I get done with exams, somewhere between making Code Libraries for CUDA and working on video-content for this site) "Skyhook".

Think of it like CTF-Face, only with two extra side buildings. One building has a lot of weapons (redeemer and stuff) -- the other has a power node. If you control the power node (right now by "use button" trigger because typical power-node functionality seems to not work right) it blocks off all access to a team's flag room from the other team :p

You can see the fun that would ensue.

Should be plenty of power for the forums plus a server or two. I don't think they would use that much bandwidth, do you?

Should be WELL under 2.5TB, but I don't know for sure how much under. It'd be good to check.

I did some quick number crunching, and a 16 man server with each player requiring 6 kb/s (seems to be pretty consistent around the web) of transfer and running at that capacity for 10 hours a day (this is an approximation because it won't always be full), it's about 3.3 GB per day of bandwidth. That in a month would be 98.9 GB, which is only 4% of the 2.5 TB allowed per month. And apparently it's not too heavy on system resources. Could conceivably throw up a few dedis if these numbers are correct.

Definitely TF2. I think there's a big enough base of us here to start that up.

L4D should be good (except I don't have it[yet])

CE is an obvious yet most likely a not very viable choice due to usage. But who knows?!

Yea, Linux is generally superior for web hosting. The majority of dedicated game servers are hosted on Linux, and yes you can play on Linux servers from a Windows machine. Dedicated servers basically just redirect data between clients so there's no real compatibility issues there.

There's no Halo dedicated servers for Linux though so you can't run it on a Linux box unless you install some kind of Windows emulation software (like WINE). Except that really impacts performance.

Wine technically isn't emulation, so there wouldn't be a performance hit. The reason I say preferably Linux distros is because setting up Wine is an extra step. To start it would be easier to setup up a Linux server, but HaloCE would be a possible option if there was reason to believe it would actually be used.

IRC.

Adding an IRC server has been suggested around me a few times.

I'm against it for a couple reasons. For one, IRC servers can get massive, and it feels like a waste to make a whole IRC server for just one channel.

Secondly, I really can't be assed to learn how to work IRC server software and be an IRCop. :suicide:

e: I think this is a good time to mention that I registered #modacity with irc.gamesurge.net. Not much happening, but come on in and idle anyway. My aim for it is to be a catch basin for +1 posts and other member-to-member interaction stuff that doesn't really require posting on the forums.

I say that modacity chooses the servers with the biggest support. The rest we should just set up a "Modacity Server Fund" and rent servers from someone who rents them out.
