It's up. (http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&link=RTVPublicBeta)

It's currently a Beta only open to those who payed the 750 points for a Bungie Pro subscription within the last year (those who got Pro with Mythic or who had Pro but let it expire need not apply, unfortunately this includes me). It has some system involving points, a system that is explained in the link.

Anyone who qualifies for the Beta willing to upload a video to Youtube to show off it's quality?

I'll be happy to. I bought Pro in April so I should qualify.

Edit: About quality, you can render your film in SD or HD, SD costs 1 minute, HD costs 5. Apparently you start out with 2, and I selected "i need more minutes" and a dialog box came up saying that we are only allotted a certain amout of minutes a month, and the beta ends on Bungie Day (7/7) so throughout the beta you can get a max of 6 minutes, enough for one HD video.

Edit2: I rendered 2 in SD. You can view them on their website, so there's no need to upload to youtube.

Team Kill Fail (http://www.bungie.net/Online/Halo3UserContentDetails.aspx?h3fileid=70404935) (I'm the spartan with the MKVI helmet and the Katana.)

I thought it was funny. (Yes that is me.) (http://www.bungie.net/Online/Halo3UserContentDetails.aspx?h3fileid=70411920)

Edit3: Ok so I read that the player is only available to Beta qualifiers at the moment, so here are the youtube versions:

I rendered some crappy videos and now I wish I saved my points for later. It seems like a great feature however I really wish we could have reticles...

It IS a beta, I'm sure down the line they'll make it possible to choose how to set up the camera.

Well, it isn't too big of a problem, however the obvious fix for it, which is just pressing the thumbstick twice before playing the video, could mess with some videos with other perspectives. The best way for them to get rid of this is to finally patch theatre.

Heathen i was bored and decided to post it, its unlikely to survive 2 grenade blasts and a ghost explosion, how can you make machinema? Its like you have to take all different clips of a video and download it using the render minutes which you will run out fast D:

If a person were to make a machinima, they would need an assload of render minutes.

Just record everything you need while playing 1 game on the map, and record it all into 1 film clip. then just edit out what u dont need.

It works with minutes, not clips.

Anybody else feel like it took them two years to set up this system just to make you pay for the videos? Halo 2 had unused script functions for recording video, and I'm sure halo 3 does also. It just seems like they set up a system where your videos are sent to them to be recorded on their hardware to get your money.

Terry
May 15th, 2009, 11:41 AM
Eh what do you mean script functions for recording videos? :o
I figured this was the best way for them to do it, and I highly doubt they would be making too huge of a profit off this anyway considering the bandwidth costs. :S

This is where people start to disgust me: everyone's looking at just the "buy points" option and thinking that it's the only way to use the system, and that Bungie is evil and money grubbing and blah blah blah hurf durf durf durf. Learn to read people: you accumulate Bungie Points over time, and IF YOU NEED MORE POINTS FOR WHATEVER REASON, YOU CAN BUY THEM IF YOU WANT TO.

Only the people who are too dumb or cheap to invest in a capture device will buy point packs. The points system will most likely be transparent to people like me, who would like to record the occasional amazing film or clip of the totally random, wacky kill they witnessed in matchmaking.

Anyone with half a brain knows just how big and obsessive Halo 3's general user base is. Bungie is using this points system because no datacenter in the world would be able to handle rendering the film clips of EVERY halofag in the world who wants to make their crappy machinima and just can't be assed to get a recorder.

Bungie was nice enough to set up a datacenter for us to use for film clip rendering. Naturally, everyone has a big fucking cry about it because they dare put limits on people using their stuff. Grow up.

I disgust you? You can't blame people for looking at the "buy points" in a climate like this. It just seems deceptive to go through all these loops just to get people to cough up the cash. The point is they didn't need to go through their hardware to render the videos, if halo 3 indeed has the same functions as halo 2 does, then it's quite possible to render a video on your own machine. It seems they just set up this system specifically for getting users to pay. You missed my point entirely.

Note that this is just my theory on the matter. If halo 3 doesn't have the same functions (for whatever reason) then alright, it's a justified cost.

Alright, sorry, I've talked with a few other people on this subject and all they do is rant about how you're supposedly supposed to pay to use the service while they completely overlook eveything else about it. I was getting sick of it. And that post wasn't pointed directly at you, sorry if it sounded that way.

If we could render videos on our own XBoxes, how the hell would we get them off without modding them or cracking container files? Sure you could render a WMV file to be viewed in your videos, but that's about it.

It's alright.

Also, if it is possible to render them on your own xbox, the only way i see anybody accessing that function is through a trainer or xex modification. In other words, it's probably only possible on a dev kit.
