I just downloaded the latest 185 drivers for my 8800GT, and halfway through the installation, EVERY PROGRAM I'M RUNNING FUCKING CRASHES. EVERYTHING. INCLUDING THE INSTALLER. COMPLETE AND TOTAL FAILURE. Something to do with Data Execution Prevention. Explorer is hung up and refuses to close even with CAD. I can't restart anything. If I restart the computer, the half-installed drivers could screw up everything. FUCKING HELP.

Restart, see if the drivers can be uninstalled. If not, boot into safe mode and remove them via Device Manager, or run Driver Sweeper. (http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-%28Setup%29_d1655.html)

Um, this is why you should always follow insructions. I am sure it clearly states that you should close all open programs before continuing.

Pshh, like anyone actually does that.

Though now I see why its a good idea to.

Huh, never had this problem before though. I've installed drivers without programs running before and it worked fine.

I restarted, uninstalled the drivers, restarted, installed old drivers, and stuff works fine now. Going to boot in safe mode to install these new drivers :C
I've got too much stuff to manually close it all.

That's when you know your system is bloated.

restarted, reinstalled new drivers, nvidia control panel failed to install, uninstalled, restarted, installed drivers again, stuff works but ambient occlusion isn't available in the NV Control panel, and when i force it with nHancer, it doesn't even work.

((Or to a lesser extent, Adobe's FLASH))

They're the worst I've seen for DEP errors... because they happen under normal operation.

Basically DEP is an antivirus measure that Windows has built in -- Apple tends to not respect it for some reason (go figure) >_> If you leave it on and monitoring Apple products, they will routinely execute from a data stack under normal operation... Flash does too because Macromedia were lazy, but Adobe's been cleaning it up quite well.

Basically what happened was your computer thought some program was tricked via an unpatched security hole into attempting to install a virus. DEP is programmed to, in that case, crash your system to the maximum extent required to prevent the virus from installing... even if that means requiring you to reinstall Windows itself to get it to boot.

The logic is simple: If the virus succeeds in installing you may never know it... and you'll need to reinstall Windows to fix it. If DEP kills your system you will know it... and you'll need to (in the worst-case scenario) reinstall Windows to fix it. Same worst-case fix... but at least you'll know there's a problem, and no-one will abuse your computer against you.

Well that seems pretty damn counterproductive if I'd want to back up my shit before reinstalling the whole OS. Especially considering it might not even be a fucking virus.
