A list of some cool theoretical updates for the Engineer... even though they probably would be too difficult to add in in some cases.
1) Portal Sentry Guns... replaces regular sentries. Lose 360deg rotation... gain ability to be moved and held... different guns on them. Berate enemies into submission with their creepy voices.
2) "A Not Dying Machine" -- So scout -- get your wish... he built a not-dying-machine. Replaces the regular dispenser. "Upgrading" gives a ubercharge and kritskreig to all in range for a short duration. Cannot dispense metal/ammo.
3) Duct Tape -- replaces PDA... attaches picked up enemy weapon to shotgun allowing dual wielding -- making him a battle repairer.
Engineer Taunt -- "Oh you stupid son of a <kicks>" Revives building gibs if done quickly. (Makes people make sure they kill the engineers after they destroy sentries)...
If that's too powerful... could also be used to overheal buildings instead of reviving.

The desapilizer: replaces shotgun. Allows you to remove sappers from a distance, but is slower firing than the shotgun with equal power. (basically fires a metal slug or something. Single projectile, leave it to valve to make ti something cool and engi-ish)
Different toolie-thing that you build with: Can't build teleporters, can build 2 dispensers.

haha, these are terrible suggestions. They would be to unbalanced. Especially the not dieing machine.
But I do like your portal sent idea.
Maybe a "Minisent" that only takes 75-100 metal and can be moved, but not upgraded. And only has lvl 1 firepower. But it wont fire while being held. And they can be knocked around by explosions and compression blasts.
And I always liked the idea of a wrench that could fix/de-sap faster but not upgrade.

Someone on the Steam forums posted an idea for non-upgradeable, fast-built buildings meant for offensive enigneers that I liked. Basically like level 1.5 buildings with about half health that took half the metal and time to build.

I read something like that but it was a wrench that built things at twice/thrice the speed but couldn't upgrade or repair buildings. I'm all over that.

I think something like a dispenser attached to a sentry would be cool.
It basically attaches to the back of sentry, and can auto heal it with it's metal. It can stack with the engi to have the power of 2 wrenches repairing at once, and can make sappers take 2-3x as long to kill. But the sentry is around 50% slower in rotation and it will give out no ammo or HP, plus the engi can't control when it uses metal to auto heal itself. It also counts as 2 destructions for whoever destroyed it.
