View Full Version : Ad hoc internet sharing between Mac and PC

So my roommate got banned from resnet, and I decided to be a nice guy and use the ad hoc creator tool in windows 7 to "share" my wired connection with him through my wifi card.

Trouble is, if I encrypt the ad hoc with a password, whether it's WEP or WPA, his Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard is unable to connect (as in, he types in the password and it keeps saying it's wrong even though we're positive it was right). If I don't secure the ad hoc, the mac can connect with no problems - but I don't want to leave the network unsecured or else other people might start leeching my bandwidth and get me banned as well.

If the mac is running windows 7 in boot camp, it is able to connect to my ad hoc, password or no password, so it's not a problem with the actual apple hardware afaik.

Any ideas on what the problem is? I'm not a mac user myself so I've got no idea what's the matter. Thanks.

Tell him to get a real PC.

Seriously it's probably an issue with the OSX software sucking about connecting to networks with encryption, but I don't know a whole lot about OSX.

It has to be something in the configuration for the Macbook. I've done what you're attempting to do before, but it's with my iMac instead of the MB. I don't know if that changes anything. I did exactly what you and your roomate did, but it worked.

I agree to Amit, maybe you need to configure his system. The best thing is buy new one, anyway I love Macbook. However, a questionable test was run at Austin, Texas' South by Southwest festival last year, called “Homeless Hotspots.” A marketing business gave a number of homeless people mobile wireless hotspots (http://personalmoneynetwork.com/moneyblog/2013/03/16/homeless-hotspots/), which people could use for a recommended donation and compensated them for doing it. It brought on controversy as people cried “exploitation,” but 11 of 13 participants were able to get off the roads with the money it made. But still your security is in danger.

Yeah, it's all configuration. PSP uses the same AdHoc system junk and that requires a lot of configuration work to achieve the optimal performance. Is a PSP like a Mac? No, but AdHoc still requires a lot of configuring in the Mac's related settings.
