View Full Version : Crysis 2 released

I was expecting someone else to be posting this but there you go.
Crysis 2 got released in the US yesterday and due for release in EU tomorrow and UK on Friday.
From what I hear it's on a good path to "Game of the Year" and even though the game doesn't come with the editor like Warhead didn't I've yet to hear many complaints about the gameplay and story.
Anyone here played the final version yet and got any opinions on it?
The intro looks pretty good, definably stuck to the original style.

It wont make game of the year, it's a horrible port and the singleplayer is extremely forced.

If previous GOTY awards are any indication there isn't actually a quality requirement.

True that, it's a pretty hollow award to get lol.

Why in the hell do people keep calling this a port? It was simply built on an engine that also supports consoles. They just left over a few console things and didn't quite optimize it for PC. Crappy PC coding doesn't automatically make it a "console port". I thought the singleplayer was a lot of fun. And I rather enjoy the multiplayer. People need to mellow out about this game.

Every game is developed on PC, including those for consoles. It's a 'port' because the game was designed primarily for the console market, and then that code was 'ported' to create the PC version. They took the console game and "fixed it" to work on PC, they didn't create it for PC from the ground up like they should have and then port it to consoles.
That's why it's a port.

You thought, past tense. Either meaning you have completed the SP in less than a day, meaning it is really short. Or your opinion on it has changed.
Crytek focused too much on consoles imo, which meant the PC version suffered.

It dosen't look very appealing to me (first one was alright though), and I've heard alot of complaints about the single-player and multi-player both. I might pick it up.

Yeah I beat it. Both in the leak and in the final release.

Well luckily Best Buy sent me a $10 off coupon, so I got it with that.
Crysis 2 still has potential, its already a fun game imo. Just needs to work out a few bugs is all/additional features for PC
Which I think given time will happen.

If someone were to give me this game or I were to acquire it legitimately for free, I would use this tool all the time. Would make the game play more enjoyable with a decent FOV.

It's still not? lol fail Crytek. Really glad I didn't' give them my money. You'll probably be waiting 3-6 months for DX11 if their Crysis 1 patches are any indication.

Well it has been said by Crytek before release that the Dx11 patch won't be available until Summer 2011.

tbh it could be much worse. Crysis 2 may be a measly console port, but at least the performance is pretty decent, compared to GTA IV or BC2, without looking half bad. For that matter, my roommate's laptop Geforce GT 330M can push the demo at Advanced on native resolution, whereas it still lags on GTA IV at the lowest settings.

Yeah but GTA 4 was released over 2 years ago. Crysis 2 is the best looking DX9 by far, yet cmon even Crysis 1 had DX10 support out the box.
Btw Warlods opinion is very bias, as hes a fanboy.

Obviously my opinion is going to be biased, it's a opinion.
If it wasn't biased it would be a point per point review which in it self is still biased to some degree.

Crysis 2's DirectX 11 patch in doubt
UPDATE: EA has issued Eurogamer with a statement on the matter, adding further confusion to the status of DirectX 11 support for Crysis 2.
"We have not made any official announcements about a patch yet," an EA spokesperson said.
ORIGINAL STORY: Crytek has poured cold water on a report that a DirectX 11 patch for excellent sci-fi first-person shooter Crysis 2 was in the works – but stopped short of denying its existence.
On Sunday website Maximum PC (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/crysis_2_directx_11_support_and_%25E2%2580%259Cadv anced_graphics_settings%25E2%2580%259D_being_patch ed_tomorrow) reported on a German report (http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=de&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=de&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcgames.de%2FCrysis-2-PC-213107%2FNews%2FCrysis-2-Patch-DX11-Update-mit-erweitertem-Grafikmenue-soll-morgen-kommen-817619%2F) (yes, we know) that claimed DirectX 11 support would be patched in to the PC version of Crysis 2 on Monday.
It would also add a new "Advanced Graphics menu" for those who like to tweak the special effects for maximum performance.
This, obviously, didn't happen – a fact that didn't go unnoticed on the official Crysis forum, MyCrysis (http://www.mycrysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=15962).
It was at that point that Crytek community manager "Cry-Tom" stepped in.
"No patch was ever confirmed, I have no idea why this website even posted such information" he wrote.
"This thread is locked just the same as the others for trying to spread inaccurate information. When there are any big announcements regarding Crysis 2 they will be posted on MyCrysis, if you read something about a patch for example, but don't see it on MyCrysis.com, then it isn't genuine."
The PC version of Crysis 2, predictably, looks better than its console cousins. But some PC gamers have complained that the game does not support advanced graphics settings, preventing them from pushing the game hard.
Eurogamer has asked Crytek for comment.

Doesn't really sound all that much like it's in doubt to me. All Cry-Tom was saying was that you shouldn't believe anything that didn't come from Crytek itself. Just because a website published false information doesn't mean there won't be a DX11 patch; however, it is Crytek, so I've learned not to expect too much.

Got my hands on a copy, so far at the level in the subway sequence where you're being directed by Hargreave (after killing a shitload of aliens who seem to soak up SCAR ammo like a sponge).
The game's entertaining with an interesting plot, but I'm not too impressed by how all the sequences involving a huge patrol of enemies (both CELL and alien) end up forcing me to play a first person Splinter Cell. The game's idea of "higher difficulty" is making all the enemies take a lot more damage, so the run-and-gun approach is always suicide, especially now that the Armor Mode drains battery even when you're not being hit. If you don't die while doing run-and-gun, you'll like run out of ammo before half the enemies are down. So 90% of the time I have to recon the area, tag everyone I see, and cloak and stealth-kill most of the enemies. Sometimes I can just snipe, but after taking down 2-3 enemies I end up ducking for cover with the critical health warning. This is especially true with the aliens, who take so much damage that it's much easier to just backstab them while cloaked.
Have to say I prefer Crysis 1 - while the difficulty setting also involved increasing damage taken, the nanosuit of the first game was such that the run-and-gun was always a viable approach. Hell I WANTED the NKs to keep calling in backup so I could gleefully blow up their "warthogs" as they approach.
Graphics - Yeah I would've liked to see DX10/11 effects, but it's not that big of a deal for me. While the technology aspect is nothing to brag about, I am impressed by the artistic aspect, like how the warzone NYC is portrayed. But as a PC gamer primarily, I am very disappointed at the lack of customization - even with that 3rd party config tool things are still quite limited. Console ports ftl. Granted, I've seen worse console ports but given what Crysis 1 was on PC, it's hard not to feel a bit cheated.
Multiplayer has its thrills, but it certainly won't replace Battlefield or even the four-year-old COD4 for me anytime soon.

I completely agree with everything you said. The aliens are a pain in the ass when you get to later levels on even soldier difficulty.

On a happier note, the rifle scopes no longer drift like crazy even on the automatic rifles. In the first game the scope drift was insane, even with Maximum Strength and going prone, and I just didn't bother with scopes except on the gauss/precision rifles. This time, the Assault Scope is pwnage - it would be nice if I could pair it with a silencer though. Now that headshotting with the Assault scope is quite easy, the DSG-1 isn't half as useful as the Precision rifle of the first game, except against aliens.
Did anyone else keep confusing the SCAR with the SCARAB at first? I was wondering what the hell was up with the nomenclature for the first few levels! I'd say I prefer the SCAR simply for its assault scope attachment.
Amit

I like the SCAR for multiplayer, but for the SP I like the SCARAB better. It has a silencer so I can loose more rounds without being detected as quickly.

I definitely agree for aliens, for CELL troops the SCAR seems to work better for me. Grendel reminds me of Halo's battle rifle when an assault scope is equipped.
I like how the assault scope can also be steadied with LShift just like the sniper scope. The Grendel becomes pwnage like that.
Btw, what did you guys find to be the hardest sections? I found those boss mechs to be the hardest to kill, although it was more because of the lack of quicksaves than because of the mechs actually being that tough.
Anyway I just finished the single player game (schoolwork cut me off temporarily in the middle), and the ending wasn't bad. Not great but nothing memorable either. On to multiplayer!

Yeah, you can left shift to steady any weapon, even if it's just iron sites. I loved going around cloaked with a silenced pistol + laser sight and steadying my aim to get headshots. I found the heavies to be the hardest enemies, more so than the huge walkers. Mostly because most of the time that I encounter them late game, I don't have any ordnance handy, besides maybe the rifle attached GL.

Oh those guys, I just cloaked past them for the most part, unless I had C4 or a MIKE handy. I've managed to down one with just normal bullets before, but it took more than 2 mags of SCAR ammo.

I personally think Crysis 2 should have shipped with it, but w/e its coming anyway.
Another problem ( as with all games ) is the amount of cheaters in MP. I hear its really simple to edit values and alter files
to accommodate a cheat. I'd like to see a anti-cheat system like Punkbuster integrated into the game in a future download.
Prefer this game to Call of Duty
Amit
April 9th, 2011, 11:24 PM
Well, there were cheaters at first in Crysis 1. I think most issues will be fixed eventually. It does hurt the game a bit more this time around since the MP is a major focus of the game.

Been playing multiplayer for a bit now, and once you get used to the nanosuit, it does have a few unique thrills.
Also, I love the default iron sights in Crysis 2 weapons - they're quite easy to use, in fact the reflex sights are arguably more obstructive due to the frame.
