Ok guys, I got a big fat holiday bonus from work and I'm looking to replace my ancient Sony E540 with some new heat. The building computer thread seems pretty outdated so I'm wondering what the good brands are these days.

Some deals I've been looking at:

It depends on your needs. The Samsung doesn't have DVI in. Only HDMI and VGA. I bought the Asus monitor one year ago and I love it. I chose it over all other models because it has HDMI, DVI, and VGA. inputs. At the time, I used HDMI for my Xbox (when I used to play) and DVI for my computer.

i actually have this one right here. it doesnt have speakers, but if your HDMI in is carrying sound, theres a 3.5mm out for sound from HDMI on the back. for the price, its pretty great. i enjoy it.

but yeah if you have the cash, go with a samsung one.
E: also, the one i have is surprisingly light weight. i move my computer from my dorm back to my house on breaks, and that light weight is nice. although, i cant see 13 pounds being much more of a hassle at all...

My video card has HDMI out so lack of DVI is no concern for me, I plan on using the VGA for my Xbox (as I do now) with the audio running through my computer.

I have been leaning towards the two asus ones already and these are helping in that regard, the 24" samsung is really at the high end of my price range, would rather not pay that much. I still want some of this bonus to get gifts for family/friends as well.

Amit u dumb? It's a 1920x1200 IPS panel. That's a good price too, I might order one since it's 100 bux off right now.

Fffffffuck I should get two at that price...

Ha! Dell's overpriced bullshit?

Someone hasn't feature/price compared 24" 1920x1200 LEDs.
Or perhaps even clicked link.
Samsung's equivalent (I know Dell uses the same LCD panels as Samsung) is a hundred and fifty dollars more. They're overpriced on the LCDs, but surprisingly well priced on the LED ultrasharps. I'm guessing they're at the point where they're wanting to switch off to only LED production and phase out their LCD lines so they're trying to incentivize LED purchases.

Also, yesterday they were 50 USD off. Today it's 100 USD.

edit: goat sniped. I'm planning on buying three with next semester's grant money. I'd like to get them now to guarantee the discount but I has no monies. :(.

Believe it or not, Dell actually makes some really good high-end stuff.

Also it's a 24" LED backlit IPS panel with DP, DVI, and VGA inputs. That's an amazing deal.

Fuck, clicked the link, didn't see the tiny ass IPS in the paragraph. Good price, but he does't need an IPS panel, does he? On the other hand, 1920x1200 :smugoff:

I dont know, does he want to sit anywhere other than directly in front of and slightly above the monitor?

On the other hand, 1920x1200 :smugoff:
it's not a real monitor unless it's 1920x1200.

Not a real monitor unless it's 16:10, 5:4, or 4:3. 2560x1440 is the exception, because the number of pixels makes up for the fact that it's 16:9.

I would seriously consider that Ultrasharp. If you've never used a nice IPS display before, you have no idea what you're missing.

Yeah, big IPS monitors are really nice and that's a nice price-point for one.

The next monitor I buy myself will be a Dell U3011 (http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=224-9949&dgc=SS&cid=38279&lid=1533101) or equivalent 30" IPS at the time. I've been thinking of switching to a 2560x1600 monitor for awhile now instead of three smaller ones...

I clearly have no idea what I've been missing out on. Then again, I don't consider it a big deal to be able to see the same colours from an ultrawide angle. Although, it's nice for if you have a really large sized monitor. 24" is decent sized, anyways.

AHA! AHAHAHA!

Finally starting to resent those bezels, eh? I myself am going to be picking up a Doublesight 27". Quality IPS panels that are around $150 less than their Dell counterparts, since they lack the bells and whistles. But hey, if that 27" UltraSharp goes on sale, I might get that instead.

@Amit: I don't buy into physically large displays, I just want my high pixel counts. Also, IPS is also way better at colours than TN. The latter tends to oversaturate and can't reproduce all of the gamut. It's noticeable when you compare side by side. Oh, and then IPS has those fantastic viewing angles that would wash out or invert a TN display.

IPS monitors are definitely nicer and usually come with much more flexible stands. But unless you're going to be doing photo editing or something where colour accuracy is vital I really don't see the need to spend the extra cash to get one over a TN display. And even then you can hire a spyder to fix up any problem you might have with colour management for less than $10 :s

The 30" monitors are great for rooms where you hold meetings and don't have a projector, but I can't imagine using one regularly at a workstation. Sitting at a regular depth, the 24" screens can completely fill your field of view. 27" monitors might work, but a 30" array is just too damn high.

I, too, want a 30" display. I just wish their prices would drop some day! They've been around $1200 usd for years now ;_;

Not at all, three is definitely the way to go, but the driver support and game support just isn't there yet. If I get one of those U3011's I'd probably end up getting two more in the future.

Zeph has a good point about view-depth though, and that's the reason I went with 24" monitors in the first place. They're pretty much perfect. I may just end up upgrading to a set of three quality IPS 24" monitors if I can find some nice ones.

as much as I prefer 16:10, it's pretty damn hard to find a high-res 16:10 that isn't overpriced. So I'd just suck it up and get 120 fewer pixels for a more wallet-friendly price. In fact, 16:10 seems to be going extinct. Even laptops are almost universally 16:9 now except for Macs.

My roommate managed to get his hands on a 23" Samsung 2048x1152, which is a good compromise IMO. I've been looking for ages for a similar monitor, but it seems that they dropped the model as the res wasn't that popular. Pity, I'll just stick with 1920x1080 which is already high enough for me (and I can get it in a 21.5" form factor which is desk-space-friendly).

/rant I don't get why desktop monitors can't put higher resolutions like 2560x1440 into 24" and smaller, or 1920x1080 in 20" and smaller. If 15.6" laptops can have 1920x1080 screens, why not desktop monitors?
