I doubt I can say much about it that hasn't already been said, so generic compliment :)

There isn't a single picture I don't absolutely love. (well, i don't like little kids, but whatever...)

Love your photos. :3

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
D: I want a macro lens, but I'm torn between getting a 105mm f/2.8 VR macro and an 80-200 f/2.8D telephoto lens.

Civil Engineering, thanks for asking :-D. I can't honestly see this becoming a career path for me, as it seems that there's a lot of photographers out there, most of which aren't earning much money. I enjoy it, sure, but I think I'd be happier doing something I'd also enjoy but with a more stable income.
If you're wondering why none of this is new - it's because i've been really bogged down with school, so my camera has really just been collecting dust over these past couple of months. :(

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
I really like the waterdrop pictures, but I think my favorite is the one on the beach beneath a (pier?). It really is an interesting perspective.

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Wow between you and Reaper Man this forum has some of the best photography on the net.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography

Weta's are so awesome. First one i've seen in literally years, and it's only a small bugger too.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
wtf is that!?
Ive never seen one of them before. They live in the UK?
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
I have a Nikon D40 with the stock lens, planning to get a 1.8d lens.
I've always loved your photos! Good work!

A Weta. And No, considering I live in New Zealand :eyesroll:
Sunny - go Canon and get a f/1.2 lens instead:

If you have the money of course ;p (thanks for the comment too - I do appreciate it)

I hope you realize that the f/1.8D lens won't autofocus on your D40. Great lens though, love mine on my D80. Also, Timo, Canon f/0.95 lens, lul http://www.canon.com/camera-museum/c...c/s_50_095.jpg

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Timo, is it you who has the 400D (Since there are a few photographers on this site) ? If so, would you recommend it?
I'm looking to get a DSLR camera with a decent lens. Also, is the stock lens any good?
I'm just hoping the price will go down november-time =D

Definitely would recommend it - it was a great investment. This Siteis an excellent source of canon lens and equipment reviews, when it comes to choosing the lens you want to get. The stock lenses are OK at best, the twin lens kit I got was alright when I started out; until I realized that the lenses cost less that half of equivalent lenses and they're not as sharp (manual focusing is literally impossible with the 18-55mm). But they are cheap, and a good idea if you're not wanting to fork out $700+ (NZD, not sure what prices you'd get) for a new lens.
If you are looking for a comparison between different D-SLR cameras, D-Preview is a great resource.
Note that Canon doesn't allow you to clean the sensor inside the camera yourself, but Nikon and other brands allow you to use Eclipse Swabs. This saves you time, and you can get 10 swabs+cleaning fluid for around about the same price as it would cost you to send it off to Canon. In the long run you'll eventually have a bit of dust ending up on the sensor, no matter how careful you are.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Doesn't the 400D have the auto sensor cleaner?
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Yeah it does - but for me it seems i've got some hard bits of dust that just don't want to move. You can give the camera a baseline for the dust by taking a photo of a white image too; so when you take pictures it automatically gets rid of the dust. But i'd rather get rid of the dust sitting on the sensor apposed to just going around it.

They are cheap, I got mine for about $80US (~$650HK)

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography

When you see it...

Stick insects are ugly bastards.
Was walking past my car when I saw what looked like a stick poking out of the mud-guard area of the back tire, and ended up pulling it out =x Hate to know how far I drove with it around 10-15cm above my back wheel.

Why do the first two look like paintings? Are they actually or is it just me and I'm crazy?
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
They all look amazing, how much your camera cost? Because it seems really expensive because the quality of the pictures is HD lol.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Looking on Amazon.com for an american price, it's ~$1055 for the camera body (Canon 400D) and lens I most commonly use (100mm f/2.8 macro). Finding that makes me want to move to America just so I can get a reasonable price for gear, prices in NZ are ridiculous.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
So that would be £821.47. Lol
That's a lot of money.

Long exposure. Same thing that gives the effect of red/white light streaks when a car goes by at night.
I got a 4-stop ND filter so I can expose for longer (take that timo :downs:), and I've been planning to take photos at ma local waterfall. The last one is the best, timo. Nice job.

You don't need a fancy camera to take shots like that, simply a tripod and the ability to control your shutter speed. All cameras have been HD for YEARS - Seeing as HD is anything higher than 720p, lulz.

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography

Well today I decided to blow the dust off my camera and go for an hours drive to there and back (Rere Falls), and took some photos on the way. Family life has been pretty hectic at the moment and i've got final exams in a few weeks time if anyones wondering about the absence of new pics. Crit/Comments appreciated, as always :).

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
1, 4 and 6 are beautiful.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
The content of the black and white photo is nice, however I think the black and white conversion could have been done better. Stronger contrast etc, as the whole thing looks underexposed. #4 Is my favorite one of the lot.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
The fourth shot is my favourite. The black and white one seems kinda boring though of you ask me.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
http://timo.modacity.net/pix/Bump.gif

Took these around a week ago. A bit if post processing went into these, still uncropped but something I don't usually do. The second is my favourite - the tree is in focus, but it doesn't degrade the contours of the hills which I thought it might do. Just wish the clouds were a bit more epic :p
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
very nice timo my friend. these would all serve well as desktops. betting to see in post your desktop thread.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Change the links on the images Timo!
Also, I'd love to see a put-together portfolio-kinda deal of your work! Not a deviant (unless you're using that for the best), but more of a collaboration of what you feel is your best. There has been massive improvement from you!
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
The photographs, the last post, the last.... Goddamn FTP.
You and Raperman have totally motivated to take up photography, I mean, look at those. I love the idea of catching life in a still moment.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
I think I've said this before, but you are a very talented photographer.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Thanks guys!
Sunny the servers for modacity have switched and the subdomains (timo.modacity.net) haven't been moved across or something - they should be up sometime tomorrow if jcap knows what he's doing ;) Since it's the summer holidays here I might setup my subdomain as a portfolio website. I'm horrible at making websites though, hopefully I can find a template online somewhere.
It's pretty neat to look back at what I was spitting out of my mum's old camera three years ago and compare it today. I didn't think i'd come this far at all.
Edit: The only one out of those three really worth uploading for a second time:

In all its uncropped glory. I should get rid of that little treeline at the bottom. Don't like cropping stuff D:
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Yeah would make it look perfect... I love your photos. I used to want to get into photography, but I guess it would only be a side thing for me... so I never really did anything about it.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography

That shot was literally ten steps from my computer. Out of my room, open up the door to the deck above the first floor of the house and take shots. :3
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Ive got one of your sunset pictures as my background. It is awsome.
Your really lucky to live in an environment like that Lol. Wish I did.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Fireworks, I love them. Wish I could've captured sound with these:

4" at f/5.6

5" at f/3.2

6" at f/2.8
Gisborne city is surrounded by hills, and when a big boom goes off from a firework (or dry ice bomb ;D), the boom echoes around the hills for around 15 seconds. It's epic.
Wish I had more time to set up, it was nearly over when I started shooting and adjusting because I've never taken shots of fireworks before. They look like they've turned out alright ;p

Wetas used to be pretty common in my area, but I haven't seen one (other than the small one I posted here) in years :(

Conservation
Although the weta had native predators in the form of birds, especially the weka and kiwi, reptiles and bats before the arrival of humans, introduced species such as cats, hedgehogs, rats (including kiore) and mustelids have caused a sharp increase in the rate of predation. They are also vulnerable to habitat destruction caused by humans and modification of their habitat caused by introduced browsers. New Zealand’s Department of Conservation considers that 16 of the 70 species of weta are now at risk. Programmes to prevent extinctions have been implemented since the 1970s.
That's the only thing I could find. I'd love to see one of these insects.

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Here I am again bumping this topic from nowhere.

100mm f/2.8 for 1.3s

100mm f/32** for 480s
These are two shots on two different days of my sister's flat's deck in Wellington, the second biggest city in NZ. What I found weird is that these were two days apart - and the moon has shifted hugely to the right o_. (the building in the bottom center of the first is in the bottom left of the second).
Hopefully when I go back down there this weekend I can get up early enough for the sunrise, and go to this lookout point over the city:
http://www.globalramble.com/Images/W...ton_Harbor.jpg
So if you are still wondering, yes, New Zealand does have buildings higher that 6 stories.

Hey con, victoria is awesome too!
You should grab a cheap lens, like the Canon 50mm f/1.8 http://www.amazon.com/Canon-50mm-1-8...0004693&sr=8-1, go raeging and take some pictures! You'd be surprised with what you can take - point it at the sky/horizon and leave it going for half an hour at night to catch the stars, or something. If it doesn't have a CF card they're ridiculously cheap now too.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
I know! I KNOW!
I need a CF card reader though.
I was thinking of investing in zoom lenses, but I guess its good to have a fixed with ya.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Well it depends if you want to spend the money on them or not. They'll work with all a new canon dslr too so if you want to upgrade you can. Check out www.the-digital-picture.com for awesome reviews on most canon lenses, and his recommendations for general purpose/telephoto/fixed length lenses.
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Yea I've seen some of his general purpose guides, got me reconsidering a few lens (I was going to go for a 28-105) to a I don't know what lens anymore =P
-
Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Hey, I'm bumping this to remind Timo to take more awesome pictures.

Re: [GALLERY] My Photography
Well yesterday I sat on a ferry for 3 hours and a train for 5 and a half to get from Wellington to Christchurch, to get back to uni. Something I only want to do once ;).

A random fire exit to what looks like a parking building in Wellington
The ferry ride was a bit bumpy, but got some nice photos:

A massive pod of dolphins (100+) all swam towards the boat from the side, and and went underneath. Too far up to get a shot of the whole pod, but got a couple good ones

After crossing the strait inbetween the north and south island. Biggest downside of taking photos off of a boat is that my camera's lenses are dotted with salty water, and I can't find my micro fiber cloth to clean them off :F

Train!
The scenery reminded me why I loved living here - spend most of the time out in an open viewing carriage. As you can image there was no time to compose a shot as the train was going ~100km/h the entire time, so these were taken inbetween trees a few metres away, etc.

Some vistas:

Was a good trip (esp. for only $80 for the ferry and train). Saw the northen end of the southern alps too, but with the sun setting behind them there wasn't much to capture. Might upload some more later, the train went up along the coastline too, but with a lot of it under shadow.

Re: [GALLERY] Timo's Photography
New, (mixed with) old content:
http://timo.modacity.net/all/ (not 56k friendly)
I've trawled through my photo collection, ~7000 photos to find some new photos amongst old favourites. Around 2% of my photos are on that site, and I know I missed a few ;o
Hopefully in the next few days i'll have updated my user album, sorted out the first post of this thread and gotten some of those shots into my sig :3
-
Re: [GALLERY] Timo's Photography (56k = death)
First post updated, with thumbs so you don't load ~150mb of images when you don't click the thread. Each thumb (should) link off to a full sized image, where the longest side is 1680. They're mainly photos that were already in this thread, but here's ones that have been added from my collection, unposted as of today:

Got on a computer to check the weather tomorrow and ended up with 30 minutes of internet. Should have some sweet panoramas to show in a couple of days - I don't think this computer can read raw images :F

Panoramas

On the way:

Out the window from the motel:

All shot with a 50mm f/1.8 lens.
Over the two days the weather wasn't too great for taking photos, but was great for snowboarding :3 Wasn't able to stop too much on the way either :[

Went a wee way into the Southern Alps (towards Arthur's Pass) to the snow for a bit. Was awesome.

The cropped original is ~58000x4000 pixels. I need to find one of those 360 degree flash viewing programs.

^This ice formed everywhere, make the snow literally sparkle, something i'd never seen before.

Do you have an original of http://timo.modacity.net/pix/mthutt/mthuttpano.jpg at nx1050 (at least)? I want to make a 3360x1050 wallpaper out of it.

Until then, you can try doing handheld panoramas
or you could make yourself a $1 tripod

But I think I might fiddle with the raw (both panos are just what the camera shat out) a bit later on to see if I can make it a bit nicer.

Re: [GALLERY] Timo's Photography (56k = death)
I like Graffiti.

All in the one building surprisingly. I would have a panorama of the front of the building, but there were a few cars parked out the front that would've ruined the photo :[

Re: [GALLERY] Timo's Photography (56k = death)
Looks cool, but the black and white shots seem underexposed/low contrast. In my opinion, the whole point of graffiti is the bright colors, and photographing it in black and white just doesn't really do it justice.

Yeah I guess, I was just tooling around in Lightroom. I'll put the originals in a while.

Re: [GALLERY] Timo's Photography (56k = death)
What makes lightroom so special? Doesn't Ps do it all?

Re: [GALLERY] Timo's Photography (56k = death)
It does, but lightroom makes it a helluva lot easier :3

Re: [GALLERY] Timo's Photography (56k = death)
Eh, but Lightroom has no GPU acceleration, I use Bridge because I manage thousands of photos at a time, so when I tried Lightroom, it was sluggish as hell. They're forcing me to use Lightroom for my photo courses next quarter though :saddowns:

Re: [GALLERY] Timo's Photography (56k = death)
Lightroom for me was pretty sluggish at first - I, too, have thousands of photos :|. After a while though it sped up - not sure why though.

Hm, maybe because it cached all your photos after a while.. Eh, I'll have to find out.

Normally I work with my day's photos only too, which makes it much faster.
