Battery life is suprisingly long when its running off of just the 9400M though - 3 1/2 hours, which isn't great but isn't bad. If I can afford it/Alienware offers it, I'm going to see if they sell additional batteries for it.

I went with this case and it manages to fit my M17X with a tiny bit of breathing room - the max dimensions for the laptop compartment of the bag are 16.5" x 12.6" x 2.17". My lappy is 15.98" x 12.65" x 2.11".
Lol, if you go with the SLI'd GTX 280s then that bumps the weight of the M17X up to 15.4lbs and gives it a sub-2 hour battery life. That is definitely an ouchy.

Well in the case of my laptop I just turn it off, turn it around, and literally vacuum the roster from which the cooling fans blow out of.
You'll have to err, "suck" real "hard", and it may take a little bit untill the dust starts "coming" loose, but eventually you'll see it appearing, and you can either suck it out of the roster of use your "fingers" and err, fiddle it out.
Of course you could also just unscrew the roster, but I'm too lazy to do that.

How exactly do the Alienware back-lit keyboards work? I'm configuring one to buy soon (M15x 15", not a big fancy M17x 17") but there's two options I'm confused about... One is "AlienFX" which lets me choose a bunch of colors, the other is "AlienFX Illuminated Keyboard". I assume I need the "Illuminated Keyboard" option to get the back-lit keyboard, but what does the "AlienFX" by itself cover, the Alienware logo illumination?
How many color options can you switch through on the keyboard? I see you've shown blue and red, can you do more?

Re: (Official Thread) Post your PC pics
I think that AlienFX only covers the pretty lighting on the Alienware logos, the Alienware text if it's there and the ring of light around the trackpad. Not sure though - M15x is a little bit older of a design and it might not have some of those features. I'm pretty sure that you'll want to go with the illuminated keyboard design since backlit keyboards are win :P.
Color options are in my attachment.
Regarding the fades and stuff, you can make it fade to different colors like that using the included software. The software gives you the option to watch some tutorials on how to set the lighting up when you first run it. The M17x in that vid looks like the older version, but the software itself is exactly the same and so are all of the zones that you can have light up. I haven't set up any fades or strobes or anything yet but when I get some more packing done I might play with it :P.

Re: (Official Thread) Post your PC pics
Alienware's driver download page is here - check under "mobile systems". Doesn't look like they have Win7 drivers for anything yet but they hopefully will around the time it hits retail. Mine also came with a resource DVD which probably has some driver/software stuff on it and a few other DVDs (windows disk I think, AlienRespawn, etc.).
I think that you can now in theory use Nvidia's standard driver for mobile chipsets, although I tried to install it and it bitched about not being able to install some of the things that I think are more chipset specific (hybrid SLI, etc.). Mine uses a 730i chipset and I haven't bothered with reinstalling any of the drivers or anything - I'll look that up in a bit I guess.
Oh, and yeah, at least on mine they give you access to the bios so you can do basic things like changing front-side bus or clock speed multiplier if you have an extreme edition CPU. I think you can change ram timings as well. Can't mess with anything voltage wise (probably for good reason :P).
The only thing I'd change on mine is that I'd get a bigger HDD - already running out of space on the 250GB that shipped with the lappy. I think when I actually have money/an on campus job I'll go ahead and throw two decent sized drives in - you can RAID 0 or 1 them up. Not sure if that applies to the M15x.

Re: (Official Thread) Post your PC pics
Cable management? Yeah, I definitely don't have much skill with that.
I bought a modular PSU, but the bloody cables on it are so stiff that I have trouble hiding them. Even with this horrific wiring job, though, the innards stay relatively cool.
Other reason why it's so jumbled is 'cause Acer built a really short case. The top of the PCI and PCIe slots stick out the back of the computer instead of being recessed, and the hard drives are mounted sideways compared to my M1201's case. I didn't realize the new PSU would be that much longer; there's barely enough room to spare for the wiring that runs the USB ports on top of the case and the SATA power for the optical drive.

Maybe it's because it's three cores running at 2.2GHz (that's not exactly blistering), but even when bogging down in Crysis, the hottest of the cores runs up to 44 celsius. I'm not exactly unhappy with those numbers.
And also, when I bought my Athlon X2 5600 Brisbane (two cores at 2.9GHz each), I installed the AMD heatsink that came with the new processor, and it would only run 800RPM (the current AVC runs 1800). I had to re-do the thermal paste and reinstall the AVC 'cause with the AMD heatsink, the CPU was, at idle, running around 45 celsius. Reinstalled the AVC that came with that computer and it dropped to 30 celsius.
EDIT: By "the current AVC" I mean the AVC in my last computer, though this one runs about the same.

Re: (Official Thread) Post your PC pics
Heres my current setup, although its changing in a few weeks (moving out again)
Since I had to drill extra holes into the fans to allow me to mount them to the case, for a long time they were in the same place - one attached by 3M command strips, the other propped up by a box of jelly. Since the holes the in the case were too large for normal screws, I had to get some thumb screws. Cool solution I thought :3
Need to clean my case though :C Originally there was a plastic cover surrounding that metal mesh you can see on the left of the bottom pic, which caused a build up of crap over the years. I might put that mesh back on, but the holes are so damn small it looks like they'd reduce the airflow quite a bit.

You should also reverse the orientation of those side fans, the top one is blowing in on your CPU fan and the bottom one is blowing out. You want that reversed so the top one is blowing out to assist your CPU fan, and the bottom one is bringing in cool air (hot air rises and all that).
Unless those are weird fans, usually the four supports to the middle section are placed on the direction the fan is blowing.
September 2nd, 2009, 03:19 AM
Timo
Re: (Official Thread) Post your PC pics
My CPU fan sucks air in, and blows air out the side. So there's a fan there to help blow air onto the fan, and another on the back of the case to blow air out. The bottom one is reversed because my video card's fan just spits out hot air everywhere (sucks in from the bottom of the case and spits it out the side), so that fan just pulls all the hot air out. If I reversed the fans they'd both be working against what's already happening inside the case :x
e: And they are retarded fans - SpeedFan and my BIOS report that they're spinning at around 150,000 RPM :neckbeard:. But they're quiet, and that's all I really care about. My CPU fan sounded like a vacuum cleaner was started up outside my door when I was in the middle of a game. It's still pretty noisy though - planning on getting a new heatsink soon.

Yes it's on PCI-E 1.0, since it's more than adequate to handle the amount of information flow. No need to upgrade to PCI-E 2.0 for (maybe) a 1-2 FPS increase. And yes they're both in x16 slots, what are you getting at? x16 is the fastest available anyways.

You can disagree, but you're wrong. His bottleneck is coming from elsewhere because PCI-E 1.X vs PCI-E 2.0 isn't that huge of a jump, and the cards using said slots aren't even using that much bandwidth. I saw a great discussion/explanation on the fact on some website awhile ago when I checked this. I just played Crysis with about 40-45 FPS, I was getting 25-30 before.
Edit - Here you go, I found what I was looking for:
Quote:
Now - As far as "real" performance increase? That's going to be difficult to pinpoint. Why?? Because the existing standard isn't close to it's limits. If you'll allow me to make up some numbers: Think of it as doubling the speed limit on the highway from 70 to 140. If no cars exist which are powerful enough to go faster than 50 miles an hour, and there are enough lanes to fit the traffic, does it matter???? This is like the situation now. Even multiple devices aren't capable of running faster than current limitations. So increasing the capacity of the pipe isn't going to bring much 'real world' benefit. At least the way things stand at the moment.

I've said this on other forums: Federal law in the United States (and other nations) limits the maximum microwave leakage that a microwave oven can produce to 5mw over the entire course of its lifetime at a two inch distance from source, well below anything that would harm electronics.

Re: (Official Thread) Post your PC pics
Yeahhh it may be the Whiskey ((Don't drink and derive folks)) but I seriously think that statement is wrong.
You cannot have 5mw over the entire course of its lifetime... milliwatts is a *rate*... not a quantity. 1/1000th of a Joule per second. It makes no sense to be the output of an integral over its life...
Even still... each microwave's lifespan is different... so a cheap chinese brand that is leaky as hell but dies after a week of use would be acceptable? ... Yeah that doesn't make sense at all.

Maybe I worded that poorly... At no point during its lifetime may it exceed 5mw output. And most microwaves are a lot better than that. Also, the stand for the TV helps keep it far enough away that everything has dissipated.

Couple notes about the Z-5500:
- Take those speaker covers off. They fuck up the output a considerable amount the way they're attached. Also, muffletastic materials.
- That poor subwoofer is in the back. :(
Will post pics of my college setup once I have a camera...

I experience no change of sound quality or volume (muffling) with/without the speaker covers, and bass is non-directional so having it behind the desk doesn't really matter.

Oh. You're probably more responsible about the volume then. >.>
The bass is debatable, but at those volumes, yeah, it doesn't really matter.

My desk is actually in the middle of the room, so the back of the desk is still viewable by anyone on the far couch or chairs.

My volume is usually sitting around 3-4 full bars when gaming and casual usage, I'll sometimes put it up to 6 bars (about quarter volume). Whem I'm watching movies/TV shows it's usually at about half, I sometimes go to 3/4 for music, but never anything higher.

Heh, we both measure with the bars. Yeah, that's way more quiet compared to me. Sorry, mum and dad.
