He isn't. The artist did something funny with the guns, but those definitely aren't airsoft guns. Doesn't fit the context.
But those are most definitely CO2 cylinders in the magazines, and the hole in the front is way to small for anything but a BB.
Actually those just seem to be lights, like the red ones on it also.
Just lights. Plasma cartridges, who knows. Something's up with them, but he is clearly using live ammo based on the context.
