How will Lightning make HCE's engine perform better? It's illegal to tamper with the game's source code, it's in the EULA.

But nobody has to know that the source code has been tampered with, do they? And the main thing they mean there is that it's illegal to tamper with the source code and then resell the product as your own. If you tamper with it for personal use, there's not much that you can be in trouble for.

A while back, someone at Halomaps got a new engine working for CE, but the Bungie Ninjas came and gave him a C&D. He wasn't going to make any profit, he just wanted a new engine capable of handling better graphics and a new netcode capable of syncing AI and such over the net.
