How large is the download? I have a 7Gb monthly quota to look out for.
E: What Pyong said.
1.15gb
Yeah, it's a fairly large file. Took me an hour or three to download on my not-so-awesome internet. But holy shit- just played a few games, of all types, and I love it. Haven't seen anything I didn't like so far, though I already spotted a visual glitch on Sword Base.
Grenades piss me off.
They did take some getting used to. The sound effects are amazing, but they kill you a LOT more easily than in previous games. I don't really mind it, but it's certainly a change.
That's not the impression I got from the video. In Halo 1, a frag took out your shields assuming they were full. If they were depleted a little bit, you lost an additional four bars. In Reach, it only seemed to take shields down half-way, and only a little more with some depletion.
To anyone who's played it: is that shitty melee lunge still in Halo or did they finally wake up and remove it?
Possible MP maps that will in retail:
forge_gulch?
I can't imagine they'd be bringing back bloodgulch after all this time...
"ivory tower"
yes
launch station? What a stupid idea for a map. I mean, come on.
Seems like they're going away from the Sandbox-style "one map fits all" Forge map and moving more in the direction of providing several Forge maps to cover all the bases. I might actually mess with it this time.

Ok, what?
And presumably from the same bug:
http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...2706509419.jpg
Mark VI helmet, Kat's robotic arm...
It's probably the internal name and it's possible that it is just a firefight map. Remember too, these are all from campaign in some fashion.
Also, I think it's rather immature to declare a map a stupid idea just on the name alone. You have no context whatsoever on layout or how it ties into the game.
Those forge names could just be internal stuff too, candidates for a forge only map for retail (like Foundry was)
To top it off, this is from internal map information, not from the horses mouth. Like this entire beta, it's subject to change or not even appear in retail.
Pretty much this.
When I first picked up Reach it felt like a whole new game. However, the people I get paired up against are simply put, profags, and in turn the game is starting to feel more like Halo 3.5 the more I play it. I'm hoping once I get my "aha!" moment and get a better feel of the game, it'll shake.
Also, I love how many people are complaining about the DMR and saying that the BR is soooo much better. Well, no shit, with the BR you didn't even need to line up your shot before pulling the trigger. Thank you, Bungie, for making a weapon that REALLY takes an iota of skill to use and punishes people that aren't doing it right.
I was being facetious. Don't worry, I didn't expect anyone to get it.
It took me some time to get used to the DMR instead of spraying like I did in h3, but it is very good.
I find that the overpowered weapons are
Needler
Shotgun
Focus Rifle
That's just me. Other then the fact I never picked up the Rocket Launcher and killed somebody with it, if I did I always committed suicide for dumb reasons.
Oh for those of you who might have seen me on xbox live, my GT is z BusHMasTeR (had the name before wikileaks showed that video that had bushmaster...) and it was meant for a joke.
Who likes playing as Elites for once?
They no longer use a separate biped for campaign and multiplayer, so that's why the model can use Kat's arm variant.
I agree with what polar bear said. Its a good game, its definitely fun. But does it really feel like a new Halo game? Not really, more like 3.5, which a few subtle changes and obviously the armor abilities.
Had some great games, played with polar and sparatan094 last night, was a blast.
Gotta be honest, last few games I wasnt paying attention I was having a chat with my housemate. The game I played with you was the last one of the night.
I'm not a fan of the limited armor upgrades. You can buy 3 helmets, each then have like 3 sub objects you can purchase, like a camera or light that attaches.
The shoulder pieces, most are locked because of level, I'm corporal grade 1 and armor I can buy is pretty crap, I want that Mark V :D
Chest, well pretty much same issue with shoulder pieces.
I understand this is a beta, but would have liked a bit more variety to really show case the "store" aspect.
Overall the game feels ALOT more fast paced than Halo 3.
Wasn't Halo 3 Halo 2.5, so Halo 3.5 would be a full increment above.
But really, what could they do to make it feel a leap ahead? Whatever it would be, they're probably saving it for their new IP.
I see what you mean, I think Halo 3 was too awesome, and the gap between 2 and 3 was so great, that we feel let down by this new iteration because the difference isnt the same.
Jetpack isnt as cool as trailers made it, or at least thats why I feel. Its not really that useful.
Then again, I'd pick to play Halo Reach over Halo 3 right now.
The thing I'm looking forward to is Invasion, which isn't even part of the beta yet. That's what I'll be playing most at retail. Hopefully, those "profags" will be drawn to the Arena like a moth to a blowtorch, leaving the civilized people to play Invasion.
What is this bullshit reuse of the Halo 3 AR/BR reload in place of the reload-empty for the AR/DMR, coupled with a shitty bolt movement thingie?
It just doesn't fit at all, and it shows horribly laziness. If it was me, I'd just use the nice new reload-full, and then add a bolt pull sort of like what ICEE did for the Sigma AR.[/ODXAnimationRant...Again]
(Yeah bite me, but excuse me for being an animation whore)
I am REALLY hoping that Forge Gulch is Blood Gulch and Forge Island is Death Island. I'm probably wrong.
Nice to see Ivory Tower, though.

I find that the overpowered weapons are
Needler
No. Every time Bungie makes the needler actually useful in multiplayer, everyone whines about how it's overpowered because they were stupid enough to mentally write it off and pass it over in the game for the profag BR/Pistol/DMR/etc. Seriously, it's probably not overpowered (remember, the original Halo 3 needler was "overpowered" too), you just need to learn the ways of the sidestepping. I'll let you know on Monday what I think of it. Hell, I'll probably be whoring it (<3 needlers from all 4 games).Quote:
Needler
I love Needlers.
They're my favorite weapon.
I remember killing idiots trying to get to the ATV/Sniper/Rockets on Yoyorast Island with the Needler as they ran for their lives up that ramp.
I was always more of a Danger Canyon guy myself
god...those were the days :(
^
Oh my gawd, yes. Rush to the centre room for the fuel rod cannon and whoring the overshield. :iamafag: Halo PC supremacy.
then why don't you send them a resume and get a job there mr fancy pants
you'll likely have to work on a ton of biped, vehicle, and everything else animations too, not just FP
Wasn't Death Island a Gearbox map, not done by Bungie? Or am I wrong?
It was a modified version of silent cartographer from campaign. In one of the vidocs you could see the forerunner structure that hung over the beach from that level, so hopefully it will be part of the game. Don't know how they work forerunner structures into the campaign though.
Reach wasn't colonized just by Humans ;-)
If they're going to bring any map back it should be Timberland. Either that or Ice Fields.
I just want to fly a Banshee around and annoy the hell out of everyone. :)
God...Halo on the PC was the shit :saddowns:
It partially ruined me for Halo 2 and 3. I went from living off 16-player vehicle CTF on a solid rotation of maps built specifically for it on dedicated servers to... Big Team Battle matchmaking, where the BTB map selection is tiny at launch, every game takes forever to match, half the team quits before the game is over and aren't replaced by new players, and there's severe lag every other game. It was miserable and as a result, BTB became a joke in the community, even though 16-player CTF was Bungie's preferred mode of play from the beginning.
But I'm excited about Invasion and some of the tweaks to matchmaking and their network model. Hopefully, many of my issues will be resolved and I'll be able to fully enjoy a Halo game again.
forge gulch...forge island...we can only speculate
as for PC exclusive maps i had to say death island was awesome...halo 2 BTB WAS terrible, but it had its strong points
Remember how in Halo 1 it took skill to bring down a Warthog at long range? As far as I'm concerned, what really killed big team battle for Halo 3 was the Laser. I've never seen such a ridiculously overpowered anti-vehicle weapon, even Halo 2's tracking rockets weren't so annoying. Vehicle vs. vehicle engagements are practically nonexistant in Halo 3 BTB because whichever team gains control of the Laser first has the ability to instantly and effortlessly destroy all the enemy vehicles.
Unfortunately, since the laser appears to be returning, I'll probably have to avoid BTB this time around too.
It hasn't been the same since they made them destructible, honestly. I miss perfectly placing a grenade in the path of a fully loaded Warthog, sending it end-over-end, killing the disoriented ejectees, and driving off with the prize. Shit... that's gone for good, isn't it? Somebody hold me.
Would be nice to have a game option in the variants to toggle destructible vehicles...
1. Removal of Oddball radar, stupid.
2. Powerhouse 1-Flag, stupid.
3. Flag indicator on 1-Flag, stupid.
4. No more return radius for flag, you MUST be touching it, stupid.
5. 1-Flag on Sword Base, stupid.
Also, why can't I play Arena? I'm tired of playing shitty game types with kids so bad it makes my eyes bleed. Their either overly annoying baddies or overly annoying profags, either way its annoying.
Also, the flag collecting gametype on Powerhouse is terribly designed, Red Team has a huge advantage with its flag location.
Also, anyone with the F&F/Beta code coolness, add me: iAtticus
If my list is full give me a few minutes, I'm deleting idiots.
Heh, I see what you did there, KM00.
Also, fuck the laser.
Having such an option would help with "classic" throwback playlists. It could just make the game take all the scenario vehicles and make them immune to damage, vahla! Halo 1 vehicles
That or maybe the ability to rip the turret off the back of the warthog. Then you can go to the enemy team and rip that shit off, and run away leaving them all like "they took our jerbs!".
I thought it was in the options already, just nobody ever used it.
Oh, Arteen, I see you watching this thread, I ran into you earlier. :o
On topic: WHY CAN I NOT PLAY ARENA?!
Perhaps you'll have to wait for Monday when the actual, official beta launches?
1. Yes.
2. Yes. It would be better if the offense started somewhere else. There's no point in taking the flag any other route than by the focus rifle.
3. Definitely.
4. Also bad.
5. I think it can be kind of fun. I just had a match against a Bungie employee (JohnnyOThan), and it was a blast. Well, it was also a slaughter.
More like I got up behind you and slammed you into the ground! Good match.
I loved the double damage rape machine.
I'm glad it's back.
I'll admit I forgot about that. Actually, I probably didn't play Halo 3 long enough to notice it was there. But in my defense, if it's not used in playlists, it doesn't do me any good. Besides, even with that option on, it's still not quite the same due to the physics. Like the fact that in Halo 1, they had to insta-kill any player that touches a moving vehicle, because they couldn't calculate/animate a proper, non-fatal collision. I miss powersliding into a group and hearing that Halo PC "hit" sound. The deadliest seat in the Warthog was once the driver's seat and I miss that. Let me have my nostalgia.
I just ran into jcap in FFA. Quitter!
Can't wait to play this tomorrow :o
I forgot the pistol had zoom until last night, since then, its been my weapon of choice. It is awesome.
It's not fair, damnit, it's not fair!
Timo, two days man! It's coming out "late morning" PDT.
Played Slayer Pro earlier, if that is any inclination of how Arena will play out, I'm hook, line, and sinker.
I didn't stick around H3 long enough to be too bothered by the splaser, but I can imagine the frustration involved when, a month in, everyone is an expert with it and getting in to a vehicle in any kind of open environment would be a death sentence. Bungie should have made it more like what they said its role was -- a vehicle sniper rifle. Could you imagine if the actual sniper rifles didn't require you to aim at the head for 1-shot kills? Just make a critical region on the vehicles and if you miss, I don't know, light the passengers on fire for a DOT effect as a consolation prize.
Flip a tank, yes, as well as send warthogs flying across the map in the most hilarious manner ever, yes as well. I think it might've even worked where if you just hit the vehicle only it would be affected and the passengers would be unharmed, even after slamming into the ground back by their base. (OK so I exaggerate a bit)
Sounds like this CMT laser acted similarly to the gravity gun from H2CE maps, albeit hitscan instead of a blob.
fuck the spartan laser. the only weapons that can even hit anybody at long range is the battle rifle, carbine, the sniper rifle and the laser. the carbine and battle rifle cant kill anybody at range before they laser you, and unlike the sniper rifle, the laser has that little target painting dot which allows you to sweat balls about 2 seconds before your ass gets blown up. i can remember tons of situations where i was BRing some asshole who was painting me with a laser, only to break his shields as the laser tore through my torso. yelling and anger ensued
fake E: also fuck how the spartan laser kills every vehicle and everyone in every vehicle in one hit, except the wraith for whatever reason. the wraith takes 2 laser blasts to kill and by the time you get the first shot off, somebody is either shooting you, or the wraith is running you over.
halo has been a frustrating experience for me since day 1 :saddowns:
real E: energy swords can go fuck themselves too :maddowns:
loving everything about this idea
Soon I'll be doing a stream of a walkthrough of the various maps in the beta, including the FF10_prototype map
E: Stream up: http://www.livestream.com/mw2hax
Found some pretty sweet info found in the Beta's code : http://www.360zone.net/halo-reach/18....html#post3572
Campaign maker? Seems pretty feasible to me, since I remember it being said in the first ViDoc that the AI wasn't going to be scripted whatsoever. The Shield Generator armor ability sounds quite a bit like a bubble shield to me.Quote:
Take your party to combat and objective-based missions that you select and design. Your rules, your maps, your game.
Also, Golf, Soccer and Bumper Cars gametypes? Sounds pretty interesting to me :P
What time EST does the beta come out?
They don't have a specific time. "Early morning PDT" is the closest we have. I'm estimating 4 or 5am EST, maximum 9am. They have to make sure all the tech is ready before opening the floodgates. They also said they'd put up a large announcement about it as soon as it is running.
Bungie.net says LATE morning... so im assuming they go in at 9am as usual sit around have some coffee, wake up... sort their tech out and it'l all be ready for like 11am-12... :@
Oh, oops. Thought it said early. Thanks for catching that.
I really hope we have some equipment-like AAs. I'll miss bubble shields, power drains, and grav lifts from Halo 3. I always liked using power drains for their anti-vehicle abilities, but it seems that the new grenade launcher will retain some of that ability, so that's nice. The super-jump AA seems like it will replace the grav lift, and work in maps where full jetpack ability isn't desired. If Shield Generator creates a bubble shield (and it could be balanced by a long refresh timer), then I won't mind the loss of equipment.
I won't miss the bubble shield, because they killed it's awesomeness by making it stationary in Halo 3. I liked the version that rolled around better.
Play these two videos at the same time. Start the second around 25 seconds into the first
I don't think it's going to be a campaign maker. Probably something along the lines of creating truly customisable gametypes, as in, decide objectives, create phases and loadouts. I can imagine they're going to make Forge more powerful for this purpose, seeing what they learnt from Halo 3; that players want to design their own map designs and not just edit existing maps. Perhaps those Forge specific maps will allow more streamlined tools for creating map layouts this time.
POWER FIST! Oh my god, does that need some context. That's a lot of damn armor abilities. How are there going to be enough loadouts available to pick what you want? Hopefully, the retail version lets you swap on the fly, so they can have the armor ability versions of power weapons (POWER FIST!) strewn around the map to be fought over.
I wouldn't hold my breath for campaign maker. You need some level of scripting just to give the AI a vague notion of what it's supposed to be doing. Sounds closer to a custom playlist to me, which is a good feature for people that can get big groups together regularly.
None of this stuff is set in stone, in any case, but it is interesting.
Halo 3 had the same exact things, so I doubt Reach will be any different.Quote:
Playlists
There will be a playlist just for Xbox LIVE Trial memberships
Some playlists will be limited to Xbox LIVE Gold memberships
Some playlists will be region specific
And some playlists require a certain rating to play
(He also missed one of the lobbies.)
So I found out I have a child account, and thus I am not allowed to download rating pending or mature content.
I seem to remember Bungie saying that child accounts could access the beta, but I'm not allowed to access the beta video, which leads me to believe that I won't be able to access the beta, either. Do you guys have any ideas? Does anyone who is currently playing the Friends and Family beta have a child account?
Wasn't hard to find....it's at the top of this page.Quote:

11:36 PST here.
Anyone wanna vidmasters in ODST until the beta comes out?
Gamertag: DEEhunter1
so today is the beta and whatnot, took a day off from classes, I'm doing good enough to take one hit atleast
Beta still isn't up yet.
Wtf, how do you get the Beta. I just put ODST in and all it said was "Preview the BETA"...
