YOINK! update time. I took some time today and finished unwrapping the main gun. I was then able to bake the normals to the gun, and even though there are still errors on the normal map, its looking damn good.

After i finish cleaning up some of the more time consuming things to fix in PS by messing with the low res cage a bit, im going to render the normal map at 4096x4096. It comes without AA, so when i scale it down it should also blend some of the edges a bit. For everything else, i can fix it up in PS.

The location of the magazine makes it look like it'd have a really low capacity, with the caliber it appears to be, and fire through a submachine-gun like length of barrel, the stock looks like it would collapse right into the firing mechanism, and the rail still doesn't look like it can hold shit. Also, not entirely fond of the pattern on the barrel. Am I the only one who doesn't really like this thing? :(
lol silly nub. The bullets do not go straight up, they go back, loop around INTO the firing mechanism, and then are chambered and fired, with cartridges being expelled from the side. The stock does not fully collapse into the weapon as that would be silly, but can be adjusted for different users, or if you're rambo, easier one handed use.
Do you really doubt the power of magnets? my dad has some twist knob magnets that are holding 200 lbs of overstacked wood against a wall. He trusts those magnets so much that he parks his acura TL in front of it.
And im glad you're not fond of the 'pattern' on the barrel, it shows im doing my job at creating something original.

Wow, hostile much? Magnets, okay. They'd better be neodymium, because neodymium is awesome. The cartridge feed system sounds a bit farfetched, but hey, look at the P-90 or the SMG from Halo 2! The adjustable bit of the length of the stock still appears as if it would go straight into the firing mechanism if shortened to the end of the ticks on the side. Also, my comment about the barrel is my own aesthetic opinion. Doesn't matter if it's original or not, I don't have to like it.

Well, personally all the forerunner stuff is the same sort of style, it all uses the same kinds of lines and same angles into each other, but I think the style evolves as the civilization grows. Just like we have Egyptian and all that, they had different styles of that stuff. Realistically, it's not all forerunner style. Forerunners are just the race that we call them. Back in those days in the halo story line, that style would have had a specific name, to the forerunners, maybe different clans or time periods. Who knows. The halo 3 stuff looks like a more recent forerunner style.
@Exam: I'm glad to hear someone going against the bandwagon. I personally like the gun, but I do agree with you that some parts of it seem silly, but come on, it's realistic enough that it could work, and the point by now is to make it look really, really cool. But I guess you can't win them all.
@Dane: Dude, that inspires me to continue working on my forerunner map. With your textures on it, it could be friggin amazing.

The detail like those pins and the lines on the magazine the receiver shield thing and can be done with a normal map quite easily :o
Damn, you model quickly. Also, some details like the cylinders (screws) on the barrel, things that dont pop out that far, can be done in a normal map. But hey, if you've got the tris, use em!
That's what's necessary for us to model right now, we have a list of things that need to get done whether you guys like guns or not, lol.
Finished UVing the scope, now im just going to tweek the uv's a bit and then render a better normal map tomorrow or something.

I have to say, while it still has a lot of errors that need to be fixed, I fucking LOVE the way it looks in FP. It looks absolutely amazing from that angle, and it isn't even skinned yet! Bravo, keep up the good work!

Only just started the amour bitmaps, that biped has 3 different amour bitmaps that make it up so it's only partly finished. Anything white/dark gray isn't finished and some parts are only just bump maps at this point..
wave, although the models may look super complex, they only fall in the 6k triangle range for long guns and 2k for handguns. no big deal. i'm sure that later on, we can map details on (especially on magazines) but that's besides the point.

You have no sense of scale because there is nothing in the scene to refer to. Brutes aren't short and fat, but they're not tall and thin. They're tall and bulky. If you seen MC in the scene you'd see.

you dont need vehicles, you can walk too. just takes a bit longer.
my point was, this map can't really go without vehicles, due to it's size.
i can guarante you it won't be everyone runnning to the warthogs when a game starts.

That, along with fighting Elites (you ARE reskinning the Elites, right?), will be near impossible, due to the fact that you will be fighting two hella-cool enemies that you will want to stop and gaze at while they are tearing you apart.

I personally think the models look great, just the way he modeled them is a bit funny. He knows now though, since he started skinning hes learned that sometimes you have to model differently in terms of unwrapping.
Mainly, I think whats throwing you off Rob is the smoothing. It's all fucked up since the export from max to maya, but I've fixed it up a bit.
to me, the proportions of the brute biped just look odd. but really, i think the brute that bungie made is too crazy and not really well designed--or at least something was definitely screwed up between the concepts and the modelling.
Nothing is ever screwed up Wave, lol. It's just a design choice. They seem fine to me :/ Not all animals are the same proportions as people. They've blended gorillas , rhinos and people together, so you get those big forearms and calf muscles, with the slight hunch backs and stuff.
dude, in H2 look at their thighs. It bulges out in a cylindrical shape, then all of a sudden without any real muscular form tapers in, and whammo theres the knee. Its seriously as if they modeled the brutes by extruding a cylinder. Look at the forearms as well. Plus, they have no ankles, just a shin and calf which looks like a freakin tube that blends into some hoof thing, with two spikes at each side of their square feet. Wierdest piece of shit ive ever seen in a best selling game :D

Bungie aren't fucking stupid. If a bunch of people from internet forums can see "faults" I'm sure an entire professional studio would have seen said faults. Think outside the square.
Maybe they just have muscly ass thighs, maybe, they have huge ass shin bones, maybe, just maybe they don't have as much fluent movement as a human body, but they make up for that in pure strength.
I personally am glad the brutes are the way they are. If they were the same proportions as a human, it'd just look like your fighting a bunch of black guys, who have alot of fur and ape/rhino/lizard like features.

On the contrary, dane. I'm not used to human anatomy in that sense, im talking about how the brute reacts with the rest of the art. All other enemies (elites, hunters, jackals, grunts, and all the flood) are designed very well and look very real. The brute stands out from them. It doesnt fit in. You're using a tremendous amount of suspension of belief which i find odd seeing as how you yourself are a great artist dedicated to making things right. The muscles and shape just dont look right, and they dont look primal (in halo 2). They said many many times that they themselves were not happy with the halo 2 brutes, that they looked like odd monkeys. I can then happily say that they look much more covenant in halo 3.

I've got my basic BSP, I go to Materials, use the Multi-Sub-object, and have like 2 different materials, one for the ground and sky... [blablabla, like the basic tutorials]
I use ground.tif for my bsp. But when I compile my BSP, the ground is white after the radiosity and skying and stuff. help please?

I attempted making the tutorial less then a week ago, but a little bit in I forgot how I modeled it... My main problem was I was trying to recreate my exact thought process of how I modeled it to the viewers, but I just couldn't remember. I'll probably end up just making it the fastest way, instead of my way.

The floor texture is too busy, make it a bit simpler looking. The shape of the door is the only other thing that concerns me, it's a bit unusual.
