Oh, well regardless I still agree. Where I live, Pubs are hotspots for eating and drinking, but not much else. There's not that much social networking at all nor is it used as a hub for tasks/jobs. If anything they're treated like vintage restaurants in the U.S.

I don't know how true it is abroad but in the US the temperance mentality is still quite strong. People view bars as places that no good will come from.
Replace "pub" with "church" and you'd be summing up the entire platform of a good chunk of the GOP.
