The key seems to be registered over the internet instantaneously when entered. Of course this brings to mind that Microsoft could be the ones storing the key, rather than the user actually getting it stored on their personal computer. So perhaps there's more to it, such as generated code that signifys it's legitimate? Unique codes? And maybe this code doesn't even have the Product code.

No offense KIWIDOGGIE but if you were really the programmer you brag to be, you wouldn't be taking so long, making excuses. and generally putting it off. It's already been done, it's legal.
I write all my game keys and names down in a word file and print it, so when one of my cases goes lost, I still have the key, no need for an app to find it (just a suggestion).
I just don't lose the case. That works wonders for me.
Not everyone owns a digital camera or camera phone.
Not everyone owns a scanner.
Both paths still lead to it getting lost. Shit happens, it'd be nice to have a piece of insurance, that's all.
