My 470 is quieter than my old 260, and MUCH quieter than my old 8800GT. Subjectivity makes me a happy camper.

The problem is the tiny fan compared to the ones on the GTX 285/480/570/580/590.
One of my 6870's is a hell of a lot louder than the other. And it's the XFX one with one fan. I have to run it at 80% instead of 100% like my MSI Twin Frozr II because it's twice as loud, with one less fan.
Yeah, that's the entire point of the Twin Frozr II series cards lmao. Pretty sure the fans on the Frozr are bigger than the reference design as well.
Okay, so my second GTX 470 came in (check the Heaven Benchmark thread for my updated results). I've got the the video together now as well:
:realsmug:
"This video contains content from BecauseMusic and UMG, one or more of whom have blocked it in your country on copyright grounds."
So I'm guessing Canadians can't see that vid. :\
I should have watched it before it got taken down. I have the feeling I didn't miss much, though.
It should be fine, I disputed the claim on the audio.
WTF I live in CensorGermany. I can't watch 50% of the YouTube videos but I do can watch that one.
Yeah, the dispute should have unblocked it in pretty much every country.
EDIT: Oh wait, for some reason Germany was listed as one of the countries where the video was available by default. Maybe I messed up the dispute or it hasn't gone through for some reason. If it's not up after a week I'll reupload it and dispute again.
Yes you'll have to do that since we still can't see it!!! :maddowns:
Some of you have already seen it, but here it is (still unblocked, and SHOULD remain unblocked):
Forgot to put up some pics. Going through them, I've only got a couple that are worthy of showing. Haven't taken any beauty shots of the finished build since the GTX590 showed up so late. I'm running a LAN on the 21st, so I'll take some then. I plan on getting three 24" monitors and arraying them in portrait mode while there, so that will have some decent picture opportunities. Also, I figured out how to get the fan/led assembly powered, so it can do that stuff now.
First off, I'd like to thank Newegg/Tiger Direct for switching to paper padding on their shipping boxes. It was a pain in the ass the last time the cat found a box of packing peanuts.
Naturally took a shot of the mobo before I dropped the 2600k in. Wished I had an SLR to control the focus on the pins, but this is better than nothing. Kinda kicking myself for getting this mobo. That thermal shield is designed to only work when you drop a fan in it. Stupidly enough, a fan does not come standard. Where other parts on the motherboard idle in the mid 20s, the area by the USB 3.0 controller idles 20 degrees warmer. Gets worse when you're rendering.
Setup to see if it POSTs. After this, I started putting it into the case. At that point, cable routing and screw thread frustration kept me from taking many pictures. Of those, the most interesting involve me taking up a stupid amount of table space for the build.
Actually, I take that back, I do have one, but it's kinda meh. At least it gives a bit of perspective on how it fits.
Raptor showed up like this. Those plastic bumpers they use to pack the OEM versions probably had someone jam their thumb down on it to fit them on there causing the power header to give way. Gotten it back from RMA, just gotta find the time to drop it in.
More to follow after the 21st.
Lmao at the Raptor.
oh god that case
ugh
How is that Level 10 GT for cable management? Did they make it easy to get to the front bays? Video showing that off would be awesome :)
Guess what I got, didn't guess? Well have some videos:
That's pretty sweet actually. Looks like it works well with a tripple monitor setup.
Are there no AmbiLight monitors (like those TVs)?
God I wanted to like the track in that second video so much, but then... ponies. Fuck.
I like your setup freelancer! Esp the screens, really neat.
Nice!
Triple-slot 570? Is that necessary? Is it overclocked or something? 1600mhz RAM? Why not 1866 or 2133?
But yeah, that is a nice setup! 2500k's sure are awesome!
On another note, I'm thinking of ordering some sleeved extensions from this guy to get rid of gross stock PSU cables. For the worksman ship I think it's a decent deal, what about you guys?

I'll take your xbox. Ha ha ha ha. :P
Nice setup btw.
Haha, who knows, maybe one day I will feel generous. :)
Thanks, i like it too. :p
Btw, 1080p is up.
I'll buy your XBOX for cheap. I'll even come by and pick it up so there's no shipping charges. Oh, and I'll be coming with some Popeye's so we can enjoy that setup to the max.
I want to do something like that one day, but I have too much computer gear with the triple-monitor setup already in my room... LOL
haha, I'll take you up on that offer of Popeyes Amit! xD
Also, @ Cortexian; Living room? :p
I plan to do another setup like this in the basement actually, as during summer time its the coolest place in the house.
You'd be surprised how compact I can make shit when I put my mind to it. I'll probably end up using a TV instead of a projector though since I don't have any large walls avilable. My walls aren't white either.
If that was supposed to be a joke, it didn't come across as one.
Wrong thread?
shitty phone pics of the comp i just built for my brother...
the power wire was too short to go around the back and it just barely fit across the video card, ill have to look and see if they make extender wires for it.
also i should have researched more, i saw the pins on the socket and thought i bent half of them lol, almost fucked up the mobo thinking of how to bend them back.
i read online and have seen many occasions where people did the same thing tho so i don't feel as dumb.
Sexy case man. Looking nice. :)
Why did you chose to go with that direction for the HDD/SSD installation? Stick the power sockets on the other side and you see less cables.
I forgot to reply to this before sorry ~
I got that card because of how quiet it was, and it was nearly the same price as a reference gtx570 so why not? Now it's more of a hassle because it makes tons of heat in the case and roasts the cpu. No point in overclocking it really; Ive measured it drawing an additional 100 watts at the outlet with overclock and I don't notice it in games. :ugh:
Also Sandy Bridge doesn't give a crap about how fast your ram is
:eng101: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4503/s...he-best-ddr3/8
Quote:
I think we confirmed what we pretty much knew all along: Sandy Bridge's improved memory controller has all but eliminated the need for extreme memory bandwidth, at least for this architecture. It's only when you get down to DDR3-1333 that you see a minor performance penalty. The sweet spot appears to be at DDR3-1600, where you will see a minor performance increase over DDR3-1333 with only a slight increase in cost. The performance increase gained by going up to DDR3-1866 or DDR3-2133 isn't nearly as pronounced.
But there's still a performance increase going to 1866 or 2133 if you're going to OC past 4.4GHz
...You have it sat right on top of your pc.
Why do you have it sat on the most likely thing in your house to disrupt it's signals?
I thought that microwaves were the most likely thing to fuck with the signal. My own router is behaving like a piece of shit after 4 years, but I'm gonna stick with it until the 802.11ac routers are below $80.
Also. Let us all be real for a second. You just got that router because it matched your computer. :-3
I sat it on the computer there because that's where the router has always been in our house. I put the server there at a later data, that's also where the modem is if you look (SMC). I haven't had any signal interferance issues.
It doesn't really match the computer that well, except that it's black and has blue LED's.
I don't know, that the texture matched the case or something. It kinda does, but only on the front panel which I just realized you can't see in the photo anyway :P
who the hell use's esdf seriously.
i tried esdf in a couple of games to attempt to give myself more buttons to work with. theoretically, it should be wholly superior to wasd because you get w a and x to work with, and z is easier to reach. in practice, muscle memory would repeatedly pull my hand back to wasd. and once i got a 5 button mouse, i ditched the concept of esdf entirely because i no longer needed the additional buttons.
it definitely makes sense in theory though. i think i actually tried it because of mooks
I don't get why you'd do it.
Between mouse buttons and keyboards with macro keys there's no point.
don't be a hater
http://www.artofneil.com/misc/epicReference.jpg
every "gaming keyboard" I've bought was a piece of shit that had terrible ergonomics and/or lacked media keys and/or some keys stopped working.
I'm not going to dish out 100-200 bucks on something "decent" when I can find reliable, sturdy Natural Keyboard Pros with perfectly functioning media keys in the bargain bin at our locally owned computer shop for less than ten bucks.
to be perfectly honest I'd much rather have a mechanical keyboard than anything else, but those are expensive as fuck.
something like this would be cool, this is a razr "mechanical gaming keyboard" but even with the macro keys you have to reach all the way over the tab, caps lock, shift area to hit them. kind of out of the way.
also runs for 80-90 bucks.
e:
pshh ahaha got my macro keys right here.
Logitech G110:
http://www.logitech.com/en-ca/keyboa...d/devices/5902
Macro keys are left of Tab/Caps/Shift area but I can hit at least 6 with my pinky without stretching it. Backlight (no keyboard should be without). All the media keys you need.
I have the G15. That looks clean. I like it.
I don't understand his arguments. What game could possibly come out that would warrant moving to ESDF? If I was to use ESDF, my pinky would be resting on the windows button. I wouldn't be able to crouch anymore.
G110 supreme, bitches.
lol I use v to crouch
that's weird you're weird.
It's easier to use Left Ctrl as crouch because you can use your pinky finger to do it quickly. Since Left Shift is sprint and you never use sprint at the same time as crouching, there's no worries that your pinky will be in use at the time that crouch is needed. "V" is such a weird key to use. Then again, it's the same distance from the ESDF keys as the "C" key for people who use "C" for crouch so it sort of makes sense.
You guys must have fucking small hands if you think V is a long distance to reach.
Not sure if the V key is really a long reach, it's just more or less, awkward.
It's not that long of a reach, but there are better keys that are already within the immediate area around the WASD keys.
I also don't use wasd, remember
v is the equivelant of c
I read it.
:smith:
I actually have the keyboard.
backlit keys on this keyboard are a gimmic, with the keys being hard to see because the lights aren't nearly bright enough and there isn't enough flood light AROUND the keys which believe it or not makes a HUGE difference.
Try out something from Saitek, the original saitek eclipse 2 that i had was a fucking dream.
Both my Saitek keyboards had much dimmer backlighting than the G110. My G110 on red is the brightest backlit keyboard I've been able to find.
ive got one of those low profile saitek eclipses. i can see every key in pitch darkness. its pretty decent for gaming as far as im concerned.
I sort of agree. My G110's LED lighting is pretty dim, but that's only when you have the lights directly over it. Even with my lamp directly over it, I can see the Red and Blue no problem. The purple is a bit harder to see in light, but you can still see it. What you have to understand is that this keyboard's LEDs were meant to be used in the dark, otherwise the publicity on this thing would have been much worse.
The red lighting is what I use most of the time. In daylight and darkness it is clearly visible. In the dark, though, blue is definitely the brightest. It lights up the area around the keyboard really well, but not as much as something like the Saitek V.5. I don't like light pollution coming off my keyboarding and bathing the area in light. The Red is just as visible in the dark, but its better for lateee night gaming because the red glow is more soothing on the eyes. The shades between the Red and Blue are easy to see in the dark, but the Violet colour is as bright as you're going to get between the two.
Unless you are going to use the macro keys, go with the Cyborg V.5.
You haven't looked very hard. The Cyborg V.7 from Saitek lights up like a Christmas tree and the G510 is quite similar. Both of those keyboards have separate LEDs under each key along with multiple brightness levels so you can customize the fuck out of it.
yeah i honestly have no idea what faillancers talking about there.
i had a saitek eclipse II for about 4 years, and it was incredibly easier to see then the G110.
the G110 also feels worse to type on... it feels like a keyboard that tried to do too much and ended up doing nothing spectacularly.
my keyboard gets light bouncing off the screen, creating a sheen over the keys, and washing out the actual backlit colours, something that NEVER happened with my old keyboard because it was just so much dam brighter it didnt matter.
so please tell me what saitek keyboards you've been using.
owait, so you bought the G110 already? Uh oh.
I had an Eclispe II. Actually, I still do, but not in my house any more. It was definitely brighter than this G110, but I don't really care how bright the lighting is as long as I can see it comfortably. And YES! The goddamn sheen is an annoyance when you can't see the keys. The keys are also way smaller than any other desktop keyboard I've used. That tripped me up for a week. You get used to it all, though.
I had an Eclipse I for YEARS, tried the II but it was even dimmer than the I so I returned it. The G510 is the same brightness as the G110, just has more colors, at least my friends does.
Honestly never looked at the Cyborg keyboards though, don't like the style.
I lied about my G110 being the brightest keyboard I've seen, that right goes to Alienware laptop keyboards. Three individual Red, Green, and Blue LED's under every key. There actually looks like a fourth one but I'm not sure what color it is, white?, yellow?, not sure. Looks like four individual LED sources under the keys.
well i cant speak for your keyboards, i just know that my old saitek blew the G110 that i have now completely out of the water in brightness. i could have and often did have lights sitting strraight over it and i could see everything perfectly.
The g110 i got was a christmas present to replace the old ecclipse 2 that i had, and i've been a little dissapointed with it.
Hey, it was a present, at least you didn't have to spend $100+ on it. When I bought mine it was $89.95 + 13% tax. A week later it showed up in Best Buy for $20 less. Imagine how mad that made made after I realized how my expectations of this product were dashed. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. I love this keyboard and won't replace it until it literally dies.
when you own a house, incomes are pooled together.
no matter where the money came from i did buy it myself.
I got my G110 when I was working at Best Buy for cheap.
Now I have a second one that's brand new sitting in my room unopened in a box because Logitech customer support is awesome. I was having some issues with the keyboard randomly disconnecting so they sent me a new one. I decided to try the new software that happened to be released while the new one was shipping to me and it fixed most of the disconnection issues.
LOL
Ha, I remember that. What good guy Logitech doesn't know won't hurt him :realsmug:
I had a Saitek Eclipse I. One of the original ones, not the re-branded Cyborg one, back when there was the option to get silver keys on black deck or black keys on silver deck with blue as the only lighting option for both (I got the former). Fantastic keyboard, built like a tank, brightness was great in the dark. The keys were hard to see in the day without turning off the backlight, though. Blue + silver = bad contrast. The space bar got a little wobbly after awhile, but it still functions just fine. However, I wanted to graduate away from tacky blue LEDs to something more...subtle. So, I bought a Logitech Slim Illuminated for $80 (along with the rest of my shiny new computer). I thought I was going to be able to use that $35 rebate, but it expired before I got my keyboard in and they wouldn't let me use it. Bastards. I was pretty pissed. Even worse, it went on sale at Best Buy for $50 the following week.
Then a month later, my computer exploded.
The Logitech Slim is a pretty solid keyboard. It's sturdy, heavier than it looks, looks fantastic, and feels nice. I make more typos than with the Eclipse, though, and I think that's because it has only slightly more travel than your average laptop keyboard. The back-lighting is strong and I can see everything perfectly in any lighting. My biggest gripe has to be the same one you see in all of the other online reviews: the function keys have the back-lighting on the icons and not on the number (i.e. the "Eject" icon is lit, but not the "F8"). I don't have the icons memorized, and I don't have the function row's layout memorized, so it's a hassle when I need to use them and it happens just frequently enough to be irritating.
Oh, and whatever you do, don't ever pull the space bar out for cleaning. It will never feel right ever again if you do that.

Temp setup.
Still working on it.
Nice!
I think you were messaging me earlier about GPU's? You don't need three Nvidia GPU's to run three monitors for gaming, only two GPU's (each GPU is limited to two display outputs). When it comes to triple-screen gaming performance Nvidia and AMD are pretty much tied now, obviously most Nvidia setups are faster than a single AMD card powering three screens since you get the bonus of SLI. I'll break it down this way:
AMD Pros:
• Can run more than 3 monitors in the future (5/6/9).
• Hydra Vision or whatever it's called automatically lets you segregate the screens so programs maximize to the screen they're on instead of across the entire screen.
• Can run three screens off one card.
• Probably cheaper.
AMD Cons:
• Using one card won't get you very good performace.
• Less driver updates.
Nvidia Pros:
• Better triple-screen performance.
• Lots of driver updates for increased Nvidia Surround performance/compatibility.
Nvidia Cons:
• Requires something like Matrox PowerDesk to segregate monitors for efficient workflow.
• More expensive (requires two identical cards).
I'm sure there's more but those are my main issues.
Uhhh......Is that a bike in your house/room? Or is this setup out in the garage?
Lancer you forget ATI does have Crossfire which is somewhat similar to SLI.
I'm very impressed with how your third monitor actually requires a second fucking desk.
the new high end Nvidia cards will have 3 monitor-outputs.
just sayin'
It's in the house. Think of it like a showroom. :-3
@Freelancer; thanks man, I went with ati this round.
@Sel: Thanks, I can't tell if that's sarcasm or not, But yea, this is the reason I am calling this a temp set-up. Maybe I will attach the screens with wall mounts.
@Neuro: I already have the Asus Republic of Gamers Matrix GTX580 Platinum edition video card. Costed me a shit ton of money. I am pissed enough about them putting 4 outputs and only allowing 2 to work (Not even talking about gaming here), to move over to ATI now. I will move back when the asshats allow more then 2 monitors per card.
Just purchased the Asus ATI 7970... Should arrive any hour now. :)
...
Couldn't you of got a second GTX 580 Platinum for cheaper than the 7970? 7970's were GTX 590 price-range last time I checked... Dual 580's would have been significantly faster.
Oh I see, so it wasn't just a flat new card purchase.
Pretty much. This way I only have to pay the difference, which isn't to much.
Yeah, in that case a single HD 7970 is the way to go if you're only going to run one card.
At least until the new GTX 690/HD 7990 come out.
This is what I did today:
6870, dual core processor added, 500w psu, fan added in the back.
120mm fan added to the side
rear view of the case
view of the outside where the 120mm fan goes
My current build on the left, and the other one I just build on the right
I got that computer back from my friend the other day and decided to make it a gaming pc for my gf and I to play together.
i dont know if any of you are familiar with the nvidea MDT cards, but they support up to 4 (i think) displays.
