Re: The Official CMT SPv2 Promotion Items Thread (vid update as of 5-18-07)
things work fast. anyways thats waaay off topic. well, nevertheless, it still is a matter of opinion, how "well" the plasma bolts sound that is. i hope that the melee attack is altered from the last time. halo 1 plasma rifle's melee was dumb, h2's was unnessesarily slow, and cmt's from sp1 was... kind of innefective looking. i hope there is a more brutal CRUSH to it this time around. for all weapons actually

The MC should use his fist for both the Plasma Rifle and Plasma Pistol.
What would be interesting though, is if it could be enabled that performing a melee with the plasma rifle did more damage when it was overheated.

I always thought the Plasma Rifle melee would be thrusting that middle plasma bar thingy that shoots the bolts into the opponents body... Like sticking a hot rod and thrusting it with force.
As in, as Explosive American and BobtheGreatII mentioned, the two prongs in the middle between the top and bottom barrel. I always assumed that the rod, or the prong, is always smoking hot, meaning it's ideal to thrust it into a body to cause extra damage. Sounds brutal to me.

But that thing is thin. It would probably break.
Re: The Official CMT SPv2 Promotion Items Thread (vid update as of 5-18-07)
well the plasma bolt for h2 sounded cool, for h1 it was just plain dumb
as far as the melee went:
h1 original: dumb as hell
h2: needs serious work
SPv1: was ok, but looked kinda dumb, looked lik it had no power to it, it's lik beating a hunter with a toothpick.....
p.s. can someone from the actual CMT team answer this?: how much of SPv2 are u done with?
Re: The Official CMT SPv2 Promotion Items Thread (vid update as of 5-18-07)
I found an article once on plasma weaponry in Halo. Let me see if I can dig it up.
Re: The Official CMT SPv2 Promotion Items Thread (vid update as of 5-18-07)
I made up everything I said, and THEN I found articles supporting it...I have no idea where those articles are now. :downs:
The Halo 2 plasma rifle sound lacked punch. That was the problem. It sounded better in H2CE than in Halo 2. I turn up bass in Halo 2, still no punch. I turn it up in H2CE, and hello, what do we have here? Something that makes me scared when fired on full auto in my direction at close range.

You pretty much got it spot on. I found the article. One proposed principle suggested an arcjet (the arc between the two prongs of the plasma rifle) could be used to heat gases (atmosphere, as you proposed, but unlikely) and then a magnetic "bottle" would contain the plasma as it traveled to the target, as in Halo. Pretty fascinating stuff. Here's the article.

With Forerunner tech, the atmosphere could be easily heated to plasma. With our tech, we'd use a noble gas like Xenon or Argon.

The plasma is generated from the gases of the atmosphere in between the prongs, and is held in place while it builds by magnetic fields. The plasma is then shoved along its merry way by another magnetic field towards the target. Now, the matter of "how does the plasma hold together" pops up. Well, there are two ways. The first and most likely is that a current is induced into the plasma to coax it into a plasmoid state, which can hold itself together without any outside help. The second, and less likely, is that the gun emits a magnetic bubble, but if that were the case, then you'd have plasma bolts going haywire when more than one plasma weapon is used in the same area.
All of this happens faster than you can blink, by the way. Otherwise, we'd see the weapon charge for each shot.
So, how much do you really know?
I don't think even the covenant have the knowledge nor the tech to create a generator small enough in the plasma rifle to create said magnetic bubble. After all they did just steal forerunner tech and retrofit it to their liking.
It's probably the plasmoid state like you said. In halo 1 whenever a plasma bolt hit a surface we could see a splash of plasma around where the bolt hit, probably plasma residue from the plasmoid state. So you're most probably right with the first theory.
