Modacity Minecraft Server

Ok, so according to the Minecraft Wiki, chunks are loaded in a 9 x 9 grid around you, and each chunk is 16 x 16 x 128. That's 144 x 144 x 128 blocks. Am I correct then in assuming that it would be a bad idea to build something with a length and width larger than 144 x 144? You wouldn't be able to view the whole thing at once, right? Or am I missing something? I've seen several structures that people built which were much larger than that which could be viewed just fine. What's the deal with those?

It might be because render distance changes how chunks are loaded. Not sure though, just a guess.
