Re: The best pictures you've seen.
Photo is of a volcano in Chile which erupted after being dormant for 9,000 years. Pictured is an exceedingly rare ‘dirty thunderstorm.’ Scientists are not entirely certain what causes dirty thunderstorms, but it may have something to do with the molten rock and metal, dust and debris causing static charges in the clouds. Regardless of what causes it, it’s terrifying.

Re: The best pictures you've seen.
Wow! That's awesome. It would suck back then though, because with those cameras, you had to sit there for a good 5 mins until it captured it, then you would spend another 15 mins getting it to come out right
-
Re: The best pictures you've seen.
Yup. Notice the water's all blurred because of the exposure time.

Meh, color photography has been around since the 1860's. Also, that photo was taken in 1912.

No, that was back in the days of nonsilver processes.

The exposure time required was obviously more than is nowadays, but, judging from the amount of blurriness of the water, I'd give that shot 10-30 seconds; a minute tops. One cannot sit perfectly still for much longer. If he did, he probably would need a brace, as they did in older times.
Also, I reckon that the film sensitivity wasn't the issue with the exposure time, it was the tiny aperture required to get a large depth of field with a large format camera, which that photo was quite likely taken with.
Here's the first permanent color photograph, taken in 1861

Anyway, speaking of old photography/photographers, here's one of the iconic photos, taken by Henri Cartier Bresson, one of my photographic heroes.

The book's dust jacket:

It's full of articles and illustrations such as this. Lots of really unique spacecraft. It's one of my favorite books on my bookshelves.

Re: The best pictures you've seen.
I knew colour photos had been around for a long time, but I didn't know it was that long. Guessing that either cost of film or the development process were the reason it didn't really get big until the 50s and 60s?

Re: The best pictures you've seen.
Wow.
Don't argue with Dane about art, Snaf about guns, or apparently Reaper about photography.

That and the ethos that only real art photographers shot in black and white . Color photographs were considered to be suited only to advertising and the amateur snapshot.
Oh, and color film was (initially) much lower sensitivity than black and white.

Yeah, the practicality and expense thing explains why true colour WWII footage or photos are rare. I see a lot of recoloured stuff passed off as original, but can usually tell having either seen the actual B&W clip, knowing some of the colours are off (if you see Germans in pure grey, it's a dead giveaway - Feldgrau is basically a desaturated green, almost turquoise), or if the colour depth just seems wrong. The real stuff tends to be rather desaturated and leans towards the blue side of things, from what I've seen.

Re: The best pictures you've seen.
WWI was easily the shittiest war in human history. Not even Vietnam has a patch on it.
-
Re: The best pictures you've seen.
Nope. What WWI was though, was also the last "civilised" war in history. After that, every war became a war of morals and a definitive "good vs. evil" war, where as both sides were on even footing in WWI, and no one treated the other any better or worse than his foe. Atrocities were still committed, but it was relatively evenly distributed across the belligerent nations.
-
Re: The best pictures you've seen.
I've been to a place in France, tombstones as far as the eye could see. All of them died in WW2, I believe they all died on just D-Day too. It was unbelievable, it doesnt really hit home until you see the vast number actually being represented in front of your eyes.

No, North Africa was in WWII. Both sides were quite gentlemanly towards each other - unlike all the other theatres.

Yeah, I've been to a lot of those. When I have kids, I'm taking them back there so they can see for themselves what comes of senseless violence and (in the case of WWII) bigotry. Did me a world of good.

Yeah, going to war over some terrorist not affiliated with Serbia other than being Serbian killing an Archduke of Austria is very civilized. You know, then the whole civilized part where a bunch of treaties force other nations into the war... then Germany going through Belgium to get the UK in the war..
Yep. Civilized as far as I can see.

It is not an awesome reference in the least. You can't see all parts of the armor.

Re: The best pictures you've seen.
Shows some detail nicley though.

I disagree, it shows plenty of detail. Anything more is unnecessary, but it's not really about that anyway. Though it doesn't show the entirety of the armour, it's still a great reference for the areas it does show in detail. You would need more reference images to get the proportions and main shapes right, but that has nothing to do with detail.

Yep. Civilized as far as I can see.
The war itself, not the reasons behind it. Hence the quotes around the word civilised.
Stop trying.

Both of you shut your whore mouths. I swear to god the moment I saw that spartan I wanted to punch a kitten. His mouth piece looks like someone ripped off a thermal vent from a starship and slapped it on his helmet. His chest plates look too broad so I don't know how he can cross his arms. The legs and feet look nice but that's about it.
I hate that Armor.

At best, it's the friction causing the blades to glow, but I really have a hard time believing that that is the cause.
