The writers for the show are the writers for the comic. Eventually almost everyone you see right now will die. That's the reality. Hell, Shane is supposed to be dead already so I really don't know what they are doing with the characters currently, but I like it. Except for the part where Sophia is still missing. Well, Robert Kirkman is still writing a few episodes. You'll notice that Season two is more on track with the comic than Season 1 was, though.
