This is a place in Egypt called the White Desert.
The white rocks used to all be part of one plateau, but the blowing sand has worn it down into pillars over time.

A 50 megaton yield whose shockwave was still measurable the 3rd time it passed around the earth; a cloud that was over 45 kilometers high when it exploded. Windows in sweden broke because of it.

Re: The best pictures you've seen.
Already knew about that one. But a greater amount of smaller nukes is more destructive than a single big one, and the US has always had more than Russia and has always had more locations to deploy them from.
But Tsar Bomba is still the mother of all bombs, to be fair. :caruso:

Dont the Russians have a 200 megaton nuke?

They were going to make the Tsar bomba 100 MT but the scientists chickened out after realising it may be a little over the top.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar_bomba
They were afraid of the nuclear fall out but even though they halved the yield they still nearly wiped out a village.
The bomb was dropped from an altitude of 10.5 kilometres (6.5 mi); it was designed to detonate at a height of 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) over the land surface (4.2 kilometres (2.6 mi) over sea level) by barometric sensors.
The fireball touched the ground, reached nearly as high as the altitude of the release plane, and was seen and felt almost 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from ground zero.
If it had been dropped on paris this is the radius of destruction you should expect.

Now that is a fucking nuke.:gonk:

I read that last night. I remember hearing in my US history class in 11th grade that the Russians developed a 200 megaton warhead, the largest in any arsenal. It would literally incinerate 2/3 of the US on impact.
Also, why the fuck would the Us need 30k and Russian 40k nuclear warheads? Would we really ever need that many if a war broke out? (note US and Russia now have >3000 now)

Of course we wouldn't. I read a theory a while back that if you target several massive pyroclastic volcanoes and use a nuclear warhead on them the resulting eruptions and ash would effectively bring upon nuclear winter and the population would starve to death.
Whether or not that's actually possible, I don't know.
-
Re: The best pictures you've seen.
Trust me, we'd find an alternative way to grow food...we wouldn't starve to death.
Also, that would make a p cool wallpaper cheezdue...

it's all about second strike. If they bombed us we'd bomb them so hard it wouldnt be worth it for them. and vice versa.

The reason I thought it was real becuase it was sized down alot, and I never saw it big with all the details. I realized a few seconds after, but at first glance I thought it was.

Actually it was the opposite for me, the turtle just seems to pop out and looks totally out of place. Maybe its an optical illusion or something, but it looks relatively low res, and almost like it was shopped in.
Iirc, there are a few more like this posted on one of the first few pages of this thread that were also very photo-realistic looking.

I meant how they've created those effects. Parts of the water look like a streaked line of pixels. The way the fern up the top right is blurred just doesn't look normal.

actually I completely agree that everything but the turtle looks pretty hokey.

Re: The best pictures you've seen.
the first thing that struck me as fake was the turtle.

I'd say pretty much everything in that pic is hokey.
