Well those of us who live in the US don't seem to think it's illogical. We don't say it "The 27th of July, 2008" like some other countries, we say it "July 27th, 2008". It just makes more sense to us. You have no more leverage in calling our method illogical than we have calling yours illogical. It's a matter of opinion and custom.

Isn't it called the English System? I'm pretty sure it was them who created it, but we were too ignorant and obstinate to switch over to the metric system when they did.
