meh, it's pretty good, but it's gonna be hard to top that rifle. BTW, if you're starting on a new gun, where's the pics of the finished, error free normal mapped lowres version of the rifle?
Also, I get the back of the scope, but the front seems a little funky. why is it that

Also, I get artistic license, and it is futuristic and the way weapons function is likely to change, but still, the clips on both guns seem to be in very odd places.
I like the unique shape of the front grip, tho. Actually, I like the overall shape. Like the other one, it has a very unique profile. It shall be highly recognizable. =D

Also, I encourage all people serious about their map making/modding/game design to make the move to UT3. You'll get a much more open sourced editing kit (infact, completely open) and a game that looks a million dollars and runs a million dollars. It's also one of my favorites shooters. You can do the fast twitchy ass shit or the super slow mo lo gravity shit thats always fun as well. It's got many vehicles and weapons to have fun with too.
Besides, with the fully available editing tools at your disposal, you can practically make your own game if your not too fond of UT's gameplay.
Also, seeing as UE3 is a largely licensed engine, it'd be a bonus to be able to work with it.
How bout you take a look at some actual cliffs.
I've never ever seen bark that looks like that. It's only because theres moss there so you all jump on the bandwagon of thinking it looks like a red oaks bark. Fact is: bark is WAY more grained and stringy, and looks very flaky and isn't like that at all....Real bark actually has lots of tiny spores, fungi and germinations growing on the surface, lots of little hairs, and actually looks like wood.
The actual crack patterns of the texture look nothing like what you'd see on tree bark.

all from different trees. As you can see, the colour is much more blotchy and contains more green. The surface is also severely grainy and stringy.
The actual crack pattens of the bark are much more uniform, almost V shaped. It's all very neat, and none of it fragments off.
Even if you were to find a tree with smooth irregularly fissured bark (wtf), with moss growing in between it, it doesn't matter because cliffs can look like anything depending on location and what they're made out of.
What I painted is crevassed muddy shale with moss growing in the damp cracks...
I painted it off a real cliff, and it looks almost exactly like what I painted.
So I updated the sniper more (hate shot tags, I use spoilers instead):

I also hollowed out the right side of the cheekpiece (was previously just a flat face), and made a little extrusion around the ejection port hood. I'll probably add details such as slight ridges and grooves along the shroud later.
Why did you render it blue with a black background? It's kinda hard to see....

Looks interesting Ross, but needs less noob render. Also, your poly distribution is a bit wonky. You have the cylinders on the front with lots of sides and holes, while the stuff closer to the back is considerably lower poly. One more thing. The "loops" you've got going across the top of the scope, they should be evenly spaced rather then the polygons getting shorter at the front.

think of the curve as a perfect curve, not connected dots. then, draw your representation of that curve based on how much the real curve extendsa away from the middle of the uncurved polygons. that amount should be the same at each poly.

yeah, i hate to say this ross, but that's a very noob render indeed. From what I can see it looks kinda nifty, but it doesn't look anything like a sniper rifle. I don't know much about guns, but it seems to me the long range ones have longer barrels with less bulky crap surrounding them.

I know, I plan to fix that. I just need to think up some details for the stock, have a fair idea what I'll do along the length of the shroud.

It's not a conventional sniper rifle, and I think you're forgetting that the bullpup design adds quite a lot of length to the barrel. The barrel extends from the muzzle you see there right back to a point just behind the scope's ocular display.

Also, don't forget that they use variants of the M16 as a designated marksman's rifle, accurate out to quite a considerable range. The M16, from what I recall, has about a 20" barrel (give or take a few).
Well, as far as the bark/rock debate I was actually mountain climbing all last weekend, so the question of whether I've seen a cliff before makes me lul.
I can definately see it's cliff, it just sorta seems barky on a first glance.
Also, the sniper looks bulky as fuck, like the kinda thing people would rename "the brick" and complain about having to "hump" around.
But that type of thing actually adds realism, and it's not really ugly, just well, the brick. Bit too curvy for my personal taste too.
I'm probably going to break up the curves with those loose, jaggy panels you see a lot on Combine architecture and machinery, like on the Citadel, APC, Hunter and shield chargers.
like i've said before, sure it may be accurate- there may be rare cases where sniper rifles, for example, are like that. but in any part of the entertainment industry, true accuracy is not what counts, it's perceived accuracy that counts. for the best popularity it should look plausible to the layman, not to the select few who do know more. that's why movies like Star Wars make so much money.
Then again, I guess it's just fine for your goal to be to appeal to those select few, who are ten times more awesome than the average masses anyway. Just so long as you don't depend on that as a career move.

Yeah well, it looks like a bevelled, extruded box. A purple, clearly not blue-grey extruded box.
This isn't the first time you've claimed purple was blue-grey, so I used the eyedropper tool and sampled your render and compared it to a real blue-grey.

It was in the dead centre of the blue column, desaturated, and darkened. No purple involved. In fact, it was closer to the green end of the spectrum than purple. Therefore, fail.
Also, I have never used bevel in my life. Double fail.

Actually, how does this weapon work? It might be interesting to have clear panels on the sides of the weapon made of that curiously unbreakable combine glass. Assuming this is just for show and isn't going into anything.

the whole back of the gun looks really unimaginative, and there should be at least something to divide that huge flat surface up on the side, such as adding a grip. Kinda bulky in general...

oh yeah and Ross, have you played Half Life 2 Episode 2 yet? You do know that they actually have the combine sniper rifle in the game, don't you? And it looks perhaps less cool and unique than yours, but it looks way more like a sniper rifle tbh.

There's a lot of shit you can't see in these; I'll probably take a whole stack of screens for the final and edit them all.
The fog really doesn't do a lot for it, so this one will take a lot of editing, maybe even a stitch or 10.

I have a thing (not a fetish, just an interest) for eye tattoo, and I usually add it as a personal touch to most of my character drawings. However, the dots do serve a practical purpose, at least to me anyway. They add the illusion that her eyes are wider, which gives her a more childlike face.

Rest of the detail will probably be normalled and skinned on; mag well is unlikely to be seen for more than a second or two so I left it alone. Final polycount is somewhere in the ballpark of 3,100.
